1. NUTSHELL GAMES REGISTRATION OPEN
Monday, September 9, 8:00 am, Online
Attention graduate researchers! Do you want to share your work with the world? Register for the Nutshell Games, the fun and fast-paced presentation competition hosted by the Center for Communicating Science. The Games will take place on Saturday, November 2, 4:30 p.m. at the Moss Arts Center, with a preparatory workshop on Wednesday, October 23, 5:30-8:30 p.m. After finishing their 90-second talks about their research “in a nutshell,” contenders will be ranked by a panel of campus and community judges. Five winners’ home departments will receive $500 for the winner’s use in program-sanctioned research costs or conference participation. Each participant receives a professionally recorded video of their presentation. We can only accommodate 30 researchers to give talks, so register soon! 2. GETTING STARTED WITH ZOTERO

Zotero is a free, easy-to-use citation manager that can help researchers save time and frustration. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of Zotero, including adding references to your library, organizing your library, and using Zotero to cite references within a document (both Word and Google Docs). To get the most out of the session, you should have Zotero downloaded to your computer already. This is the first Women and Gender in Development Discussion Series event (virtual) for Fall 2024 featuring Ms. Sidra Khalid from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). Graduate students working in FBRI labs are invited to apply for a competitive selection process to participate in a Research Storytelling Workshop that will be held at FBRI on Thursday, September 12th (1pm-5pm) and Friday September 13 (8am-5pm). Students will be expected to deliver multiple verbal “pitches” about their research, both with and without slides, in front of audiences and will receive critiques and feedback to improve their pitch. The University Libraries’ long-term technology loans are now open for fall 2024! Application deadline is Sept. 5. The Studios Technology Lending Desk has equipment available for semester-long special research, teaching, and personal projects. Requesters will fill out the form for equipment, and if there are more requests than equipment available, the decision for who will receive the equipment will be made via weighted random lottery. Research or teaching projects and projects involving a library or TLOS partnership carry more weight. For priority consideration and inclusion in the lottery, requests should be submitted by Sept. 5, 2024. Others will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Responsible for assisting to the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of Organic Synthesis and Techniques, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic, Instrumental Analysis and Med-Chem Laboratories. These laboratories serve multiple hundreds of students weekly. Duties include making, preparing of and distribution of reagent solutions of specific compositions used for the various laboratory experiments; revision and development of laboratory procedures; executing the teaching budgets for the Organic Synthesis and Techniques, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic, Instrumental Analysis and Med-Chem laboratories; Handling Laboratory facilities and equipment used in these courses; working with the associated stock for these laboratories (to include the budgetary responsibilities, supervision of workstudy students, development of a digital inventory system; and ensuring that laboratory safety practices and procedures are followed. Graduate Assistants make up the core shop crew that physically realize scenic designs for main stage production. Duties include: Assist the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director in instruction of tool use and technical theatre practices in conjunction with constructing the seasonal theatrical productions; Using hand and power tools daily in a shop setting; Carpentry, metal work, painting, lifting and carrying scenery and materials, cleaning, and other duties; Encourage undergraduate students in the practice of theatre; Become acquainted with the processes in the shop and be able to encourage proactive and progressive behavior with other graduate students and undergraduate students; Maintain a clean and organized Scene Shop. Positive Social Development Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting parents/guardians with 6th grade children in the New River and Roanoke Valley areas for the Cultivating Kindness Project. This study focuses understanding early adolescents’ prosocial behaviors and moral development. You and your child will separately fill out an online questionnaire that takes approximately 60 minutes to complete (30 minutes for you and 30 minutes for your child) three times over two years. 30. MIDDLE-AGED/OLDER ADULTS NEEDED FOR COMPENSATED RESEARCH STUDY – 1st posting
Researchers are seeking participants 40 years or older to participate in a study (IRB Protocol # 22-507) to learn if consuming artificial sweeteners have any impact on glucose levels in middle-aged/older adults. If you qualify, you will be compensated up to $75 upon successful completion of all study visits. This study involves 4 visits to the Virginia Tech Campus, over 3 weeks. 31. ENHANCING INSTRUCTORS EXPERIENCE IN COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMMING LEARNING – 1st posting
The Programming with Intelligent Machines & Environments Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study that aims to improve the experience of conducting peer instruction in large-scale programming courses. The study session would be in-person in Blacksburg(220 Gilbert) between Sep 4 – Sep 12. We are looking for participants who have teaching experience (e.g., instructor, GSI, TA, tutor) and experience in Python to test a tool for viewing students’ behaviors and sending feedback at scale. 34. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH STUDY ON SLEEP AND BRAIN-MACHINE INTERFACE LEARNING – 2nd posting
This Virginia Tech study (VT IRB # 17-860) aims to uncover what events occur in the brain during sleep that help facilitate the learning of a new task. To meet this goal, we utilize a number of physiological recordings in the lab, such as EEG, EMG, and EOG recordings. The Brain-machine interface learning translates neural data into commands to control external software or hardwire, like controlling a moving ball on a computer screen with your thoughts. Participants that are assigned to the experimental group must sleep in the lab, either by taking a nap or by sleeping overnight. If you are assigned to the control group, you will watch a documentary during nap. Total study time is approximately 11 hours for overnights or 5 hours for naps. Participant qualifications: People between 18 and 26 years with no history of significant chronic neurological disease, severe mental illness, or any DSM-IV axis I disorders, and no hearing or sleep disorders. 35. DETECTIVE FOR AN HOUR! PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR MIXED REALITY USER STUDY – 3rd posting
3DI Group at Virginia Tech is investigating ways to enhance sensemaking activities such as intelligence analysis with immersive technologies. Participants will be given a case file involving a hypothetical nationwide terrorist attack. The participants will try to solve the case with 3D interaction techniques while seated, standing, or moving around in an indoor area. The entire experimental session will take about 75-90 minutes. Participant qualifications: Participants need to be proficient in English, at least 18 years old, and have normal vision with contact lenses (glasses not supported).Participation is entirely voluntary. 36. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR THE MEASURE STUDY: MEASURING ENERGY ACROSS SIZES USING RECALLS – 3rd posting
Are you interested in learning more about your energy needs and helping researchers better measure food intake in participants of varying body sizes? Participants are needed for the MEASURE study (IRB #22-654) seeking to understand how a participant’s weight class can affect measurements of dietary intake. Participants will complete measurements of height, weight, body composition, energy expenditure, and food intake over a period of 5-7 weeks with a total of 5 visits to campus. To be eligible, you must be over 18, have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2, weigh under 600 lbs., and not be following a weight control diet. Compensation of up to $150 is available for this study.
