Race data shapes how we understand racial diversity in colleges and universities, yet the ways institutions classify and report race can produce very different pictures. In this talk, Kristine Jan Cruz Espinoza, Ph.D., traces the emergence and evolution of race data and reporting in higher education, highlighting what numbers can—and cannot—tell us. Looking ahead, the talk considers implications of race data amid updated federal guidelines and the post‑SFFA context, raising questions about data needs, constraints, and responsibility. Spring is right around the corner. Now is the perfect time to reflect on your relationships with yourself, others, and the Hokie community. Our campus community is made up of many different pieces, each shaped by the individual members of our community. When we connect with others, we begin to see how our piece fits within the Hokie community. Nurturing these relationships and shared experiences strengthens the support systems we rely on, enriches our time at Virginia Tech, and helps us feel rooted in a community that grows stronger with every piece added. So as spring approaches, take a moment to reach out, reconnect, and help strengthen the Hokie community we all shape together.
