Evidence synthesis (ES) reviews are comprehensive, rigorous reviews of available information and often serve as the foundation of evidence-based decision making. During this session, we will illustrate the characteristics and history of ES, and describe some of the methods commonly used today. By the end of this 1.5 hour session, you’ll be able to (1) differentiate narrative/traditional literature review and a systematic, evidence synthesis approaches, (2) recognize commonly used reviews methods and how to select methods based on your goals, and (3) consider how to apply some best practices from evidence synthesis to your literature review, regardless of the method you choose. 19. RESEARCH AND TRAVEL FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FROM CENTER FOR PEACE STUDIES AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION – 1st posting
The Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention is pleased to be in a position to offer TWO student funding opportunities to students whose research relates to violence. Each of the possible 8 travel awards offers up to $400 to present at extramural conferences, and the possible 3 thesis/dissertation grants would each award $1500-$3000. 20. USDA’S FOREIGN AGRICULTURAL SERVICE DIVERSITY AGRIBUSINESS AND AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – 2nd posting
FAS is investing in the future by creating a path for outstanding students, particularly those from minority groups historically under-represented at USDA, to pursue careers in the U.S. Foreign Service. FDFP is administered in partnership with Howard University and provides funding for selected students to receive master’s degrees in Agribusiness or Agricultural Economics from the accredited U.S. university of their choice. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A PERCEPTION STUDY ON TRIGGER AND CONTENT WARNINGS – 1st posting
The Echo Lab hopes to identify how social media users view and use trigger and content warnings on social media. We want to determine what is done well and what current limitations and misunderstandings exist with the current method of user-added warnings. The findings from these interviews will help direct future research as we seek out ways that social media platforms and other social media users can better support people and their mental health online. The study was reviewed and accepted by the IRB (# 22-610) and is being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Sang Won Lee (sangwonlee@vt.edu). Participants must be: age of 18 years or older; currently a US citizen or legal resident (Green card, student visa, H1B visa, etc.); regular social media users who have seen trigger or content warnings on others’ posts. 24. SPANISH SPEAKING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AS INTERPRETERS FOR STEM EVENT – 1st posting
Graduate student Fiorella is looking for Spanish speaking volunteers to help out as interpreters for Kids’ Tech University this coming spring. Although a STEM background is not a must, the volunteers need to be able to translate the science demos to parents and children in real time. 26. ARE YOU HELPING A FAMILY MEMBER WITH MEMORY PROBLEMS –2nd posting
The Center for Gerontology at Virginia Tech is seeking grandchildren, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, or step-relatives of someone who has dementia and is living in the community (not in an assisted living or nursing home). We want to hear your story about dementia caregiving. This study will involve one initial telephone interview (approx. 70 minutes) and a brief telephone interview for 8 days in a row (15–20 minutes each evening). You will be asked questions about your daily routine of providing help to your relative, your family’s involvement in the care, the use of paid services, and the mundane but everyday challenges you face in helping your relative. Interested? You may be eligible if you are: 18 years and older; a grandchild, sibling, niece/nephew or step-family member (any relationship) of a person living with dementia; helping your relative with dementia with everyday tasks; having face-to-face contact with the person with dementia at least 3 days/week; your relative does not live in a nursing home or assisted living facility. Karen Collier, a doctoral candidate in science education at NC State University needs input from graduate students on their graduate student experience.   The survey is part of her dissertation and explores the supports and barriers graduate students face. The survey does not ask for your name and should take 15-20 minutes to complete. Any demographic characteristics you provide will be de-identified, and pseudonyms will be used in reporting the data. 29. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF SEX AND HORIZONTAL APPROACH ON LIMB STIFFNESS AND LIMB STIFFNESS ASYMMETRY DURING LANDING – 3rd posting
The Granata Biomechanics Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting participants between the ages of 18 and 30 for a biomechanics research study (IRB#22-643). Study participation will involve a single visit lasting approximately 60 minutes. This study aims to examine the impact that sex and landing task have on limb stiffness and limb stiffness asymmetry. You will be asked to complete 3 landing tasks that vary by horizontal approach before the first landing. One task will require you to step off a box and land on a pair of force plates, another will require you to do the same only the box will be placed 50% of your height away from the force plates, and the last will require you to run forward, jump off one foot, and land. Upon landing in each task, you will be required to quickly jump vertically as high as you can before landing again. Participants will be provided athletic clothing with a pair of shoes (ranges between men’s 7.5-14 or a women’s 6-11) to wear during the study.
