8. NEW PROGRAM PROVIDING FOOD ASSISTANCE TO STUDENTS – 1st posting
The Market of Virginia Tech is a new initiative of Student Affairs that is designed to provide food assistance to students who, for whatever reason, have a hard time obtaining regular, healthy meals.  Such a situation could be the result of a short-term disruption in finances, residing in a food desert, or a lack of access to other financial assistance. 9. GSA PROGRAM CHAIRS APPLICATIONS CLOSING SOON – 1st posting
The Graduate Student Assembly is still accepting applications for 2020-2021 program chairs! All chairs will be selected by and work directly under the guidance of the Director of Programs and be part of the GSA Executive Council. Each position will have responsibilities related to implementing the GSA’s programs, attending meetings, and volunteering at GSA-sponsored events. This year, we are hiring multiple chairs to support and update our existing programs, including the Travel Fund Program, the Cap and Gown Program, and the annual Research Symposium and Exposition. Our 2020-21 Program Chair applications are open and online. First-Generation Student Support would like to build a relationship with first-generation graduate students at Virginia Tech. The goal of this connection is to facilitate educational and professional growth by providing tools and resources that will contribute to first-generation student success. In an effort to identify VT’s graduate student population who are first generation college students, we are requesting a moment of your time to fill out a short survey. At Virginia Tech, a student is identified as a first-generation college student if neither parent earned a Bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university. The online platform for graduate student essays, RE: Reflections and Explorations, offered through the VT Institute for Policy and Governance (VTIPG), is a great vehicle to share your research ideas and work with a broader audience and to hone your analytical and writing capabilities too. 15. GRADUATE HONOR SYSTEM RECRUITING GRADUATE STUDENT PANELISTS- 2nd posting
The Graduate Honor System is recruiting graduate students to serve as panelists who review the evidence and determine the outcome of GHS cases. To be eligible, you need to be a graduate student in good academic standing. All graduate students are eligible regardless of how long they have been at Virginia Tech. The overall time commitment is 3-4 hours a semester based on the number of cases and panelist availability. If you are interested in serving as a student panelist, please contact the GHS Chair, Anurag Mantha (ghs@vt.edu) to set up a brief meeting to discuss the role. Once the meeting is complete, you will be added to the GHS email list and are free to volunteer to serve on any panel based on your availability.

19. GRAD 5124: RESEARCH SKILLS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS –3rd posting
Take your research to the next level! GRAD 5124 (Research Skills for Graduate Students) is a one-credit, fully-online, pass/fail course offered by the University Libraries in fall 2020. Students will develop skills that will prepare them for research in graduate school and beyond. Five discipline-specific sections are offered, so students should be sure to sign up in HokieSPA for the one that relates to their subject area. 20. GRADUATE RESEARCH POSITION OPPORTUNITY – 1st posting
The VT Dept of Hospitality and Tourism is seeking a part-time graduate research assistant to support the Tribal Tourism Development Program. This program seeks to support culturally appropriate, sustainable tourism in Native American communities in Montana and Virginia. The position will work with Dr. Lamoureux to engage with federally recognized tribes to assess their opportunities for tourism development as a tool for economic development and cultural preservation. The position is paid for 20 hours weekly (lesser hours is possible but not preferred) for the fall semester. Extension to spring is possibly pending further funding. Tuition benefits are available with this position. Students should have experience working with Native American/Indigenous communities and/or community development. No tourism experience necessary. 21. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – SIBLING STUDY – 2nd posting
The VT SibLab is recruiting participants for a study of stress and the sibling relationship among individuals who have a brother or sister with mental illness. Participants are eligible if they a) are at least 18 years old, b) have at least one sibling with a diagnosed mental illness, c) have no siblings with physical or intellectual disabilities, and d) have never had  a diagnosis of a mental illness themselves. Participation involves one 30-45 minute visit to 406 Wallace Hall, where non-invasive measures of blood pressure, heart rate, and skin conductance will be taken, and participants will complete a brief questionnaire. 22. WATCHING WRITING REPLAY FOR COMPREHENSION PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – 2nd posting
The EchoLab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals that are eligible for a user study on the effectiveness of a real-time replay of writing.  The goal of the study is to understand the effect of the real-time display of a writing session and explore how it can improve the process of context comprehension in writing. This is a Virginia Tech research study and IRB #19-578. Participants need to be 18 years and older, have no problem with reading in English, and can fill out a survey, take a reading comprehension test, and answer a post-task interview/survey in English. Participants can do all of this remotely and will be compensated with a $9 Amazon e-gift card. No money will be awarded for incomplete work. Whole task should last approximately 50 minutes. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR TECHNOLOGY-MEDIATED RECREATION RESEARCH STUDY- 2nd posting
Volunteers 18 years or older are needed to take part in a VT research study titled ““Technology-mediated‌ ‌recreation‌ ‌-‌ ‌habits‌ ‌and‌ ‌perspectives‌ ‌before,‌ ‌during,‌ ‌and‌ ‌after‌ ‌COVID-19‌” (IRB Protocol #20-318).If you agree to be in this study you will be asked to complete an online survey.  This survey study aims to learn about strategies, habits, and perspectives, with respect to your current (and desired) approach to maintaining connections with nature and loved ones, through the use of technology, before, during, and after COVID-19.The survey will take between 20 minutes to 25 minutes to complete.  Participants will be entered into a drawing for one of four $25 Amazon gift cards (the approximate odds of being selected are 1 in 100). The INFORM Lab from Virginia Tech is studying smart home applications for energy-efficient operations. This study will explore how occupants interact with the smart home systems. The study will involve an online survey session (approximately 15-20 minutes in length). 25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR COMPUTER WORKING CONTEXT SURVEY- 2nd posting
Recruiting participants for an online survey about your computer working context. We are trying to understand how people curate digital resources (web pages, files) in the work context. Our team is investigating to understand what modern computer users do to resume their previous working context and whether they think that current existing features can assist them or not. This online survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes. We are seeking participants that are 18 years and older, use computers to do daily tasks frequently, and can fill out an English survey and treat it seriously. 26. HEALTHY DOGS NEEDED FOR HEART DISEASE STUDY – 2nd posting
The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech is seeking healthy dogs to compare to a clinical population of dogs affected by mitral valve disease. To enroll, dogs must be 1-5 years of age, weigh 3-25 kg / 7-55 lbs, and.be free of systemic disease, such as diabetes, Cushing’s, kidney disease, and heart disease.  Once enrolled in this study, your dog will undergo a standard cardiac examination, including echocardiography, at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Blacksburg, VA. These procedures are non-invasive, and no sedation or treatment is administered. The echocardiogram may require a small area of fur on your dog’s chest to be shaved. All appointments will take place on Saturdays (9/19 and 9/26) and should take less than 60 minutes. The visit and echocardiographic examination will be free of charge. Volunteers needed for a study to explore how bias offenses differ between young adults and older populations. To participate, you must be 18 years of age or older and a first-year freshman at Virginia Tech. The Graduate Student Assembly is now accepting applications for 2020-2021 program chairs! All chairs will be selected by and work directly under the guidance of the Director of Programs and be part of the GSA Executive Council. Each position will have responsibilities related to implementing the GSA’s programs, attending meetings, and volunteering at GSA-sponsored events. This year, we are hiring multiple chairs to support and update our existing programs, including the Travel Fund Program, the Cap and Gown Program, and the annual Research Symposium and Exposition. Our 2020-21 Program Chair applications are open and online. Get a jump start before classes start on learning the programming, version control and data skills you need for your classes and research with a two-day online Software Carpentry workshop through the University Libraries!  Workshops will take place the weeks of August 3rd and August 17th and involve interactive hands-on instruction by certified trainers with no experience necessary. We will cover foundations of working with the command prompt (Bash/Unix), version control (Git) and programming in either Python or R. 7. COMPREHENSIVE FEE PAYMENT PLAN FOR STUDENTS ON ASSISTANTSHIP – 1st posting
Graduate students on an assistantship contract may choose to pay their comprehensive and commonwealth facilities and equipment fees using the Graduate Comprehensive Fee Payment Plan. Enrollment in the plan is possible after an eligible student has registered for classes and the department has entered the tuition remission award. The plan is available during the fall and spring semesters at no cost, with a new application required each semester. Fall enrollment deadline: 9/29/20.

8. MESSAGE FROM UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID – 1st posting
If you applied for and were awarded financial aid, please remember to actively accept your Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan in Hokie SPA if you plan to use it.  If you plan to use it and do not accept, it will not appear as a payment on your university bill. You may find instructions for viewing your financial aid offer and accepting or declining your loan here. If you are a new borrower, you also need to complete Entrance Counseling and your Master Promissory Note at the Federal Student Aid website. Please take of these items as soon as possible.

9. NEW PROCEDURES FOR REQUESTING REDUCED COMPREHENSIVE FEES – 1st posting
In recognition of students living and studying away from the Blacksburg campus, comprehensive fees may be reduced for students enrolled in an all virtual schedule or who have only research hours/ independent study not located on campus.  Students must certify that they will reside more than 50 miles from the Blacksburg campus for the entire semester.  More information can be found on the Bursar website.  To be considered, this form must be submitted by the last day to add courses each semester.

16. BUILDING MANAGER POSTION AT THE GRADUATE LIFE CENTER FOR FALL 2020 – 3rd posting
SECL building managers oversee daily operations of the GLC by monitoring service, safety, and security of this space created for graduate students. Duties include walking rounds, responding to issues, and completing reports, in addition to the facilitation of the co-curricular and administrative programs of the student center services and their events. GLC building managers are directly responsible for event management bookings, opening & closing of the building, and submitting of facility work orders and daily reports. Building managers must possess strong communication and customer service skills, along with the ability to move event equipment (tables and chairs). Currently we are looking for flexible staff members that are willing to work at least two shifts a week and have weekend availability. The 3D Interaction (3DI) research group at Virginia Tech invites you to participate in an online survey. Our team is investigating promising ways to interact with Augmented Reality displays in the future. In the survey, we would ask you to provide feedback on a video prototype we developed that showcases our visions of using Augmented Reality interfaces in everyday scenarios. 18. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR EVALUATING AUDITORY DISPLAY EXPERIMENT – 3rd posting
Volunteers needed for the Mind Music Machine Lab’s study in evaluating in-vehicle auditory. This is a Virginia Tech research study (IRB Number: 19-642). The objective of this study is to evaluate usability and user perception on in-vehicle auditory displays. During the study, you will be asked to rate different auditory displays based on subjective measures. Eligibility: Normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing; you will be excluded if you are a minor, a prisoner or an adult not capable to consent on their own behalf. The study should take about 1 hour. Participation in this study is voluntary and confidential, you will not be compensated for taking part in this study. 19. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BEVERAGE CONSUMPTION STUDY – 3rd posting
The Dietary Assessment Lab of Professor Valisa E. Hedrick, PhD., RDN., is conducting a study (Research Study: 20-237)to determine the effects of online social support on beverage consumption behaviors. You may be eligible to participate if you are 18 years of age or older, are an employee or paid graduate student of Virginia Tech, and have access to the internet through a mobile phone, computer or tablet. All study procedures will take place online and at your convenience. The study involves self-reported weight & height, as well as a short demographics survey. Participants will be asked to complete several questionnaires on topics such as beverage consumption and social media usage. Participants will be entered into a raffle with a 1 in 10 chance to win a $50 Visa gift card upon successful completion of all virtual study visits over a 12-week period.
