7. LITERATURE REVIEW TRICKS & TOOLS Thursday, October 27, 2-3:30pm, Newman 207A or online How do you decide where to search? How can you access something the library doesn’t have in its collections? How can you be alerted to new studies that have just come out? How can you stay organized throughout while finding and selecting literature for your review? In this 1.5 hour session, we’ll introduce you to tricks and helpful tools that address these questions and can help you save time and enhance your searches for and review of literature. IMPORTANT COMMENCEMENT INFORMATION FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS – 2nd posting Effective fall 2022, doctoral students who want to participate in the Graduate School commencement ceremony must have their final examination card showing satisfactorily passing of the examination submitted to and finalized by the Graduate School seven days prior to the commencement ceremony in order to participate. All doctoral diplomas will be mailed directly to students from the diploma company; no diplomas will be distributed on stage. For fall 2022 doctoral graduates, the final examination card must be submitted to and finalized by the Graduate School by Friday, December 9, 2022.

WINTER SESSION COURSE: EDHE 5984: ADDRESSING CRITICAL PROBLEMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION – 2nd posting Addressing critical problems in higher education is an exploration of contemporary issues for all educators with application to those working in P-12 and higher education, as well as teachers, counselors, staff, and administrators. The purpose of the class is to engage in conversations about the various roles and responsibilities of educators, and how all educators contribute to shaping the future of higher education. Students will engage with a range of topics such as impact of college choice, student activism, influence of institutional type (e.g., for profit), and marginalized populations. 31. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR CLEAT PERFORMANCE AND PLANTAR LOADING STUDY – 3rd posting The Granata Lab at Virginia Tech is looking for participants in a research study (protocol IRB# 22-664). This research study aims to determine how performance and pressure forces of the foot are impacted by cleat type and sex assigned at birth. Once consented, participants will complete two short surveys and a series of agility tasks while wearing American football cleats and soccer cleats. The pedar-x insole system will be used to collect pressure force data during each agility task you complete. Participation involves one visit that will last approximately 75 minutes. Eligible participants must be between the ages of 18-25, wear a shoe size of men’s 7-12 (women’s 8.5-13.5), play a cleated sport at least two times a week for a minimum of one hour each time, have not had any lower extremity injuries in the last six months that limited physical activity for more than two days, and are not pregnant. OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT THE VT LEARN LAB: CONNECTING MATH AND READING (FOR 3RD, 4TH, 5TH, and 6TH GRADE) – 3rd posting The “Connecting Math and Reading” research study is approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB Protocol #21-669). The project aims to better understand children’s cognitive development and examine associations among children’s different math and vocabulary skills. Children in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade are eligible to participate. You will be compensated $15 for your time and effort, and your child will receive some small prizes during the 45-50-minute session. Dr. Vercillo is an Adjunct Professor and Postdoctoral Fellow at the School of Environment, Enterprise, and Development, University of Waterloo. 40. EVALUATING LITERATURE & CRITICALLY APPRAISING RESEARCH Thursday, November 10, 2-3:30pm, Newman 207A or online Critical appraisal is a universally useful skill for any literature review method. In this 2 hour session, we’ll discuss the importance and value of evaluating literature and critical appraising research. Participants will be introduced to several critical appraisal tools that can help researchers to evaluate the risk of bias in studies and reviews.
