Do you need to write a diversity statement? During this workshop, we begin by defining the terms diversity, inclusion, and equity, and then present the basics of a diversity statement (e.g., audience, format, purpose). You will be given guided writing prompts to help you reflect on how your own experiences, beliefs, and future plans align with DEI goals. After small group discussions, we will provide additional prompting questions for you to consider as you continue drafting your diversity statement after the workshop. 19. NEW INNOVATION POSTDOC FELLOWSHIP – 1st posting
The Office of Research and Innovation and Office of Postdoctoral Affairs in partnership with LAUNCH: the Center for New Ventures is excited to announce the launch of a new Innovation Postdoc Fellowship track within our larger Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship program. Innovation Fellowships are intended for current or prospective postdoctoral researchers who are highly motivated to extend the impact of their research through new technology commercialization activities. Successful fellows will have a high level of Interest in learning more about advancing technologies from the lab to market and are open to considering potential entrepreneurial career opportunities involving the formation of a new technology startup related to their research. Participants in this program would benefit from knowledge of and connection to Virginia Tech intellectual property that has already been captured by the Virginia Tech invention disclosure process. As such, we encourage late-stage Ph.D. students who will defend in the next few months and current, early-stage postdocs at Virginia Tech to consider submitting a proposal to the Innovation track. Prospective fellows will work with a Virginia Tech faculty member to submit a joint, three-page proposal. Please review information for interested faculty members as well as proposal eligibility and submission guidelines while working on a proposal. Carpentries workshops aim to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching research computing and data skills. Fellows work during the fall and spring semesters in the Office of Government & Community Relations in support of the President’s Office. During the Spring semester, fellows are expected to live and work in Richmond, VA during the General Assembly Session. Fellows learn to track legislation and see how policy is made at the state level. They attend committee meetings and provide updates to administrators on campus. The position also provides exposure to the budget making process for the Commonwealth and how higher education and Virginia Tech fit into the larger state budget. 27. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON PROCESSED FOOD – 1st posting
The major purpose of this research project is to learn if consuming processed or less processed foods has an impact on how a person’s brain responds to processed foods. Briefly, the full study is 10-12 weeks long with two 14-day periods of controlled feeding where we will provide ALL foods and beverages for you to eat during those times. If you choose to participate, the study will consist of approximately 34 visits and require approximately 33-35 hours of your time. Most of these visits take place in Blacksburg with some taking place on the Roanoke campus. Participants must be 18-25 years of age. You are invited to participate in a study about international graduate student experiences at Virginia Tech (IRB #23-082). Participants must be currently enrolled as international graduate students at VT. Participants will be asked to give one hour of their time for an interview with the international graduate student researcher. If interested, participants can opt in for a second (optional) 1-hour interview. In the interview, participants will be asked to explain their experience(s) with technical communication during their time both applying to, and being in, their graduate program. The interviews will be audio-recorded, with permission. Participants will be walked through a verbal consent session before the interview and have the option to rescind either their consent or register their withdrawal from the study at any time. This is a research study exploring VT’s students’ knowledge of and their opinions regarding sexual assault policies and potential barriers to reporting sexual assault to learn how current policies and resources can be further improved. Participation will take approximately 60 minutes for an online baseline survey. Virginia Tech researchers in the Cognitive Engineering for Novel Technologies (COGENT) Lab are recruiting participants for a research study. The purpose of this research study is to determine how the use of virtual reality impacts our ability to detect objects. During the experiment, you will be asked to use virtual reality (VR) glasses to scan an environment for targets. To enroll in this experiment, you do not need to have any experience with VR. We need highly active athletes (18-60 years of age) for a study examining the relationship between physical activity and total number of calories expended each day (IRB #21-567). This study will require 1 virtual meeting and 2 visits to the Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory at Virginia Tech, which will take approximately 6 hours. You will receive information on your body composition, aerobic capacity, and other health information. Participants must be non-pregnant, with a stable body weight over the past year (±5 lb.), and free of cardiovascular, lung, metabolic, kidney disease or cancer.
