1. BREAKING DOWN THE INTERVIEW

Get tips on how to answer general interview questions from Graduate School and Career and Professional Services staff, as well as your peers. Students will be in groups of 4-5 and will rotate through questions with different staff members, and will discuss how to approach each interview question. Space is limited. 2. TIE DYE AND TACOS- RESCHEDULED NEW DATE & TIME

Take an afternoon break with the other graduate students to enjoy delicious tacos and create a tie-dye masterpiece. Tie-dye materials will be provided, but please bring your own shirt (or other garment) to tie-dye. Please only bring one item to tie-dye to ensure that as many people as possible can join in on the fun. Tie-dye works best with white cloth, but lightly colored material may also work. This month, SoT NRV invites guest speaker Gates Palissery, a Translational Biology, Medicine, and Health PhD student and VT’s Science Policy Club President. Carol Davis (Town of Blacksburg) and Bethany Bookout (New River Land Trust) join them to collaboratively discuss our local nature-based youth education and advocacy programs. Come ready to learn and engage with kid-friendly tools using the natural resources of our very own Heritage Park backyard. Hosted by the Center for Communicating Science and the VT Sigma Xi Chapter. 4. ART FOR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE APRIL’S SPEAKER SERIES

This month, as the last event of the academic year, Art for Environmental Justice (AEJ) will be joined by Amy Balkin, an artist based in the San Francisco area whose works address property relations, environmental justice and equity in the context of climate change. At the meeting, Amy will discuss her involvement as an artist with various EJ/superfund projects, including Area of Interest and Invisible-5. 8. DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION IN SCIENCE BOOK CLUB

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) scientists have made significant contributions with lasting impacts to various fields of science, including physics, biology, computer science, and more. However, BIPOC scientists are still vastly underrepresented in almost all fields of science. In recent years, there have been growing efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in science. It is important that we continue to support these efforts in order to create a more inclusive and equitable future for the field of science. 17. NEW INNOVATION POSTDOC FELLOWSHIP – 2nd posting
The Office of Research and Innovation and Office of Postdoctoral Affairs in partnership with LAUNCH: the Center for New Ventures is excited to announce the launch of a new Innovation Postdoc Fellowship track within our larger Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship program. Innovation Fellowships are intended for current or prospective postdoctoral researchers who are highly motivated to extend the impact of their research through new technology commercialization activities. Successful fellows will have a high level of Interest in learning more about advancing technologies from the lab to market and are open to considering potential entrepreneurial career opportunities involving the formation of a new technology startup related to their research. Participants in this program would benefit from knowledge of and connection to Virginia Tech intellectual property that has already been captured by the Virginia Tech invention disclosure process. As such, we encourage late-stage Ph.D. students who will defend in the next few months and current, early-stage postdocs at Virginia Tech to consider submitting a proposal to the Innovation track.  Prospective fellows will work with a Virginia Tech faculty member to submit a joint, three-page proposal. 19. SUMMER COMPUTING, DATA AND PROGRAMMING WORKSHOPS – 2nd posting      
Carpentries workshops aim to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching research computing and data skills. These hands-on workshops from the University Libraries cover basic tools for programming and data in Python or R, as well as other supporting skills such as command line programming, version control, and data cleaning. 23. GA POSITION – IT SYSTEMS SPECIALIST – 1st posting
Duties and Responsibilities: assist with installation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of existing and new computer systems and services; to identify workflow inefficiencies and advise on potential improvements; assist with the review of security alerts/logs to identify/resolve security issues; up-to-date knowledge related to I.T. security issues and best practices, assist with updating College of Engineering documentation to ensure they are accurate and up to date, perform other related duties as assigned. Required qualifications: excellent oral/written communication skills; excellent organizational & analytical skills; understanding of modern IT infrastructure; experience in Microsoft Windows system support; self-motivated learner with drive to investigate problems with minimal instruction and supervision. The GA will assist the GPSS Executive Board in its administrative duties. Responsibilities include: reviewing applications for GPSS programs such as; Travel Fund Program, Graduate Research Development Program, etc.; ordering food for GPSS meetings; and coordinating logistics for GPSS events such as; Welcome Back BBQ, Little Hokie Hand Me Down, etc.. 25. GA POSITION IN GOVERNMENT & COMMUNITY RELATIONS – 2nd posting
Fellows work during the fall and spring semesters in the Office of Government & Community Relations in support of the President’s Office. During the Spring semester, fellows are expected to live and work in Richmond, VA during the General Assembly Session. Fellows learn to track legislation and see how policy is made at the state level. They attend committee meetings and provide updates to administrators on campus. 26. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A VIRTUAL REALITY RESEARCH USER STUDY – 1st posting
The 3D Interaction (3DI) group is inviting you to participate in a research study with virtual reality (VR) technologies. Participants in the study will come to Gilbert Place, Room 3113, 220 Gilbert Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060. The entire experimental session will take at most 90 minutes. The participation is entirely voluntary. Participants need to be English speakers, at least 18 years old, have normal vision (contact lenses are fine, glasses are not supported), and do not self-identify as having more than a normal level of hand tremor. It is time for the annual Dennis Dean Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship Conference hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research! This year’s conference will be on April 28, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Owens Ballroom. This day-long celebration is aimed at offering undergraduates the opportunity to gain experience communicating their research or creative scholarship while engaging faculty and other students. We are looking for judges to help with awards during the conference. Judges are not required to have specific qualifications as students are expected to be able to share their research in a format that is able to be understood by all audiences. 28. NATIONAL PhD STUDENT CLIMATE SURVEY – 1st POSTING
Yale School of Medicine National PhD Student Climate Survey – PhD students are invited to participate in a voluntary and anonymous research study about the experience of graduate students across the country.  The most essential pieces of information are highlighted below.  This anonymous survey study takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes. All graduate students enrolled in a PhD, MD-PhD or equivalent degree programs are eligible for the study and encouraged to participate. The study aims to explore an individual’s experiences during graduate school and how these experiences might relate to mental health, emotional states, and program satisfaction. Your contribution will help us better understand the current academic climate of graduate programs in the United States. More importantly, this information will help us identify pressing  issues related to mental health and educational equity to start moving toward a solution. The major purpose of this research project is to learn if consuming processed or less processed foods has an impact on how a person’s brain responds to processed foods. Briefly, the full study is 10-12 weeks long with two 14-day periods of controlled feeding where we will provide ALL foods and beverages for you to eat during those times. If you choose to participate, the study will consist of approximately 34 visits and require approximately 33-35 hours of your time. Most of these visits take place in Blacksburg with some taking place on the Roanoke campus. Participants must be 18-25 years of age. Virginia Tech researchers in the Cognitive Engineering for Novel Technologies (COGENT) Lab are recruiting participants for a research study. The purpose of this research study is to determine how the use of virtual reality impacts our ability to detect objects. During the experiment, you will be asked to use virtual reality (VR) glasses to scan an environment for targets. To enroll in this experiment, you do not need to have any experience with VR.
