Research a la Mode is a monthly venue for graduate students from different departments to come together and hear a talk by one of their peers. Those chosen in the lottery will be notified no later than Friday, April 25. Note that all gowns will have been dry cleaned and steamed, and caps have been disinfected. 28. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: STUDY WITH VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) TECHNOLOGIES – 1st posting
We are looking for voluntary participants for a user study entitled “Evaluation of Communication Interfaces in Collaborative Augmented Reality” at the Moss Arts Center. The participants in the study will have a chance to experience the state-of-the-art technology of Virtual Reality, including head-mounted display. The entire session should take around 60 minutes. This study is part of a class project in CS 5754 and has been approved by the instructor. 29. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: STUDY WITH AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) TECHNOLOGIES – 2nd posting
The Center for Human-Computer Interaction is currently conducting a study examining to investigate how future AR interfaces should be. The study will make use of state-of-the-art AR technologies such as the Microsoft HoloLens. Participants will be asked to perform physical actions, such as walking and drawing, and tasks in AR such as reading, and moving windows. Participants will be asked for their comments and preferences about different interaction alternatives. The entire experimental session will take about one hour. Participants will complete a two part assessment and an exit questionnaire. The instrument will assess the ability to evaluate the research of others and to make decisions mimicking those that might arise in the participant’s own research. The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the U.S. to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. Alpha Epsilon Lambda (AEL) Graduate Honor Society for academic excellence and leadership is inviting all graduate students to join us for coffee and donuts to learn more about becoming an AEL member. There will be a drawing for 3 complimentary tickets to attend the Urban Bush Women Performance on Apr 28 at 7:30pm in the Moss Art Center and door prizes for the first 30 students. A brief talk by Dr. Karen DePauw will be followed by a presentation about AEL membership process. Grad students may apply for membership based on academic achievements and leadership experiences. Take an afternoon break with the Graduate Fellows to enjoy delicious tacos and create a tie-dye masterpiece. Tie-dye materials will be provided, but please bring your own shirt (or other garment). Please only bring one item to tie-dye to ensure that as many people as possible can join in on the fun. Tie-dye works best with white cloth, but lightly colored material may work okay too. The first BioBuild Symposium being held April 26 in the Holtzman Alumni Center. The theme is “Building with Nature.” It will begin at 2:00pm with a workshop on the Living Building Challenge Rating System, followed by a research & refreshments poster session and Keynote speech. Do you know how to identify the signs that the struggle your student is facing could be due to a learning disability? READING DAY YOGA AND HIKE

Venture Out is leading a trip on reading day called Reading Day Yoga and Hike for anyone to sign up and take a break right before finals begin. The trip fee is $15 and that includes transportation, yoga and a mat, hike, and morning tea. Plan to meet at the Venture Out House on Roanoke St. at 7:45 am and return around 2:00 or 3:00pm.
