5. FULBRIGHT COMPETITION NOW OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2018-19 – 2nd posting
The US Student Fulbright competition is now open for applications for the 2018-2019 academic year. Grants are available in approximately 140 countries for graduate degree programs, independent study/research, or English teaching assistantships. 6. SUMMER GA POSITION IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION – 2nd posting
Researchers in the Engineering Education Department seek a graduate student with an interest in engineering students’ early career development. Primary duty is qualitative analysis of interview transcripts; other duties include participation in qualitative team meetings with researchers from multiple institutions and literature review in the area of analysis. The Granata lab is recruiting subjects for a study looking at load symmetry during running. This study requires two visits – a 2 mile run visit and a 4 mile run visit. The 3DI group is seeking volunteers to participate in a research study with  augmented reality (AR) technologies. The team is investigating the best ways to interact with AR, and this study compares various methods of interaction with virtual data and information. The study will make use of state-of-the-art AR technologies such as the Microsoft Hololens. The project is supervised by Dr. Doug Bowman in Computer Science. Volunteers are needed at the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market to help run the information booth on market days during the summer. Volunteers needed for a study examining whether delayed discounting (do you want a small reward now or a larger reward later?) is related to health, diet, and physical activity level. Must be: male or female, any race and ethnicity; ages 18-65; Body Mass Index between 22 and 40 kg/m2; not trying to gain or lose weight; have not gained or lost weight in the past six months; willing to participate in two testing sessions of about 5 hours; willing to have your blood drawn, body fat assessed, an oral glucose tolerance test, fill out questionnaires related to diet and physical activity, and wear a physical activity monitor for 4 days. Participants will receive information, related to body composition, diet and physical activity level, and blood glucose and lipids (cholesterol).  The total amount possible for participation is $60. Researchers will teach language skills to children 1.5-6 year-old children using Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), while adding either mindfulness-based techniques or psycho-education material to provide new ways to increase well-being. There will be a 50% chance of being placed in the mindfulness group. The Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention (CPSVP) is accepting applications for the Graduate Research on Violence Program. The Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention (CPSVP) is accepting applications for the Graduate Research on Violence Program. The aim of this program is to provide graduate students support for conducting thesis or dissertation research pertaining to issues of violence. Proposals are welcome from students in all departments, centers, and programs at Virginia Tech.  The funded student is expected to be a full-time, graduate student in good standing, and the research/scholarship is expected to be grounded in the social sciences, humanities, or arts. VT researchers in urban affairs & planning and psychology are seeking participants for a pilot study on mood states in transport environments. Participants will install an Android GPS app called Daynamica (only compatible with Android smartphones), answer an entry survey, and use the app to track transportation mode, route, and distance of your daily travel. Upon completing each trip, you will be asked to report your mood with a brief survey. Must be 18 or older. The Hume Center for National Security and Technology is accepting applications for its Intelligence Community Scholars Program. The IC Scholars Program is open to both current and admitted graduate and undergraduate students from any major. Recipients of these awards participate in the National Security Education Program (NSEP), giving them access to events and resources exclusively for NSEP members, while they conduct research projects related to the intelligence community or national security. Help raise awareness of infant- and child-care needs on campus by taking your child(ren) to your office/lab/class or other work area (check with your department to ensure safe arrangements; departments have been invited to participate) in the morning, then join other participants on the Grad School lawn at 11:15 to march together to the Drillfield where the event will conclude in a family picnic and remark by Dr. Laura Sands. This event is sponsored by the Graduate School. Some festive supplies will be provided and participating children may leave their hand prints on a banner.
