2. HYGIENE DRIVE FOR NRV HOMELESS SHELTERS

Give thanks this holiday season by donating new and unused hygiene products to local New River Valley (NRV) homeless shelters. Items include: toothbrushes, toothpaste, travel-size shampoo and conditioner, body wash, razors, shaving cream, soap, tissues, deodorant, q-tips, hand sanitizer, brushes, combs, and washcloths. Please drop off your items at the GLC information desk. Donations will be collected from now until Nov 15. The hygiene drive is held in conjunction with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week and is  coordinated by GLC Fellows and GSA. More information>>. Close to a billion people go to bed hungry every night. Join the GSA and GLC Fellows for a night of dining and discussion on food security and homelessness. During the Oxfam Hunger Banquet, participants will engage with invited guest experts in an interactive event depicting the global economic stratification. Those in attendance will share a meal together and discuss poverty both locally and globally. This event is free, but a suggested admission is $5 or 4 non-perishable goods to be donated to Interfaith Food Pantry and Oxfam America. Save a seat here. 14. NEW SPRING COURSE: FROM MEMEX TO YOUTUBE: CONGNITION, LEARNING & THE INTERNET

So far education has used the Internet primarily as a delivery device, not a connectivity platform. If we change that paradigm, however, interesting questions emerge: How is Wikipedia not simply a reference work, but a learning environment and a community of practice? How does Google both model and shape human cognition? How can globally networked interactive computing augment human intellect and thus address the primary mission of education itself? This course explores the intersections of computing, information science, education, Internet studies, the humanities, and the visual and performing arts, as well as the crucial and long-contested relationships among making, doing, and knowing. Course readings will be supplemented by various  texts and artifacts, from podcasts to MMORPGs to machinima, and will include hands-on experience with blogging, tweeting, social bookmarking, and other more. 15. DISNEY PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FOCUS GROUP PARTICIPANTS NEEDED
Parents with children ages of 5-10 are invited to participate in two focus group sessions to help develop nutritious snack foods for kids. Every participating child must be accompanied by at least one parent/guardian. The focus group sessions will be held on Tuesday, Nov 15, 4:00pm and Tuesday, Jan 24, 4:00pm in classroom 132 in the Food Science and Technology Building, on the corner of Duck Pond Drive and Washington Street. The first session will last 90 min; the second session will last 60 min. All participants will receive a healthy snack. The information gleaned from participants will help with designing and developing a nutritious low-fat dairy and fruit product for kids. 16. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BIOMECHANICS STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a study investigating the effects of flexion on the biomechanics and neuromuscular behavior of the human torso.  The study consists of five separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 1 hour) and participants will be compensated $10/hour.  To qualify you must be 18-29 and regularly exercise at least 2-3 times/wk. 17. GRAD STUDENT INPUT NEEDED ABOUT VT POLICY ON CONFLICT OF INTEREST
DRSCAP, a committee of the Commission on Graduate Studies and Policies, would like to meet with several graduate students who are funded by a faculty-owned company to hear their experiences. The committee has been asked to provide input on protections for graduate students as part of the revision of the university’s policy on conflict of interest. Hearing about experiences from a variety of perspectives would be helpful in thinking through proposed policy options. DRSCAP would be especially interested in talking to graduate students who:
– Are funded by a grant or contract where the source of funds was their advisor’s private company;
– Are paid directly by the faculty-owned company;
– Are working for a faculty member on his or her outside consulting.

13. GRAD STUDENT INPUT NEEDED ABOUT VT POLICY ON CONFLICT OF INTEREST
DRSCAP, a committee of the Commission on Graduate Studies and Policies, would like to meet with several graduate students who are funded by a faculty-owned company to hear their experiences. The committee has been asked to provide input on protections for graduate students as part of the revision of the university’s policy on conflict of interest. Hearing about experiences from a variety of perspectives would be helpful in thinking through proposed policy options. DRSCAP would be especially interested in talking to graduate students who:
– Are funded by a grant or contract where the source of funds was their advisor’s private company;
– Are paid directly by the faculty-owned company;
– Are working for a faculty member on his or her outside consulting.
DRSCAP will meet on Tuesday, Nov 1 and Tuesday, Nov 15, 4:00-5:00pm in 238 GLC, the Graduate School’s conference room. Some needed items include (must be new and unused): toothbrushes, toothpaste, travel-size shampoo and conditioner, body wash, razors, shaving cream, soap, tissues, deodorant, q-tips, hand sanitizer, brushes, combs, and washcloths. Performance artist Kristina Wong examines a very serious topic (displacement and depression) through a comic lens. While Wong doesn’t know the answer to the questions she raises, she puts the onus on herself to figure it out through humor, wit, and heaps of unfinished knitting, all in 70 minutes. While the performance is based on the experiences of a particular group, Asian-American women, the issues raised are relevant to a much broader audience – practically anyone who has been displaced from their own culture into another can relate to the pains of trying to fit in, to not being understood by one’s own family and/or the new environment, to feeling like an alien, and more. As many as 90% of couples experience a significant decline in relationship satisfaction after having their first child. The Mindful Transition to Parenthood Program can help couples prepare for this transition in a healthier way: participants will learn how to connect more deeply with their partner; practice effective communication and stress management; reduce pain during birth; ways to lower risk of postpartum depression. Participants will engage in research-based mindfulness practices and couples activities to enhance their relationships. Participants are needed for a study investigating the effects of job rotation on muscle fatigue and performance. The study consists of 6 separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2 hours) and one screening session. Participants will be compensated $10/hour with a $10 bonus after completing all sessions. Requirements: male or female, age 18-25, low body fat, right handed, 20/20 vision (corrected okay), no recent history of musculoskeletal disorders, and exercise 2-3 times per week. Performance artist Kristina Wong examines a very serious topic (displacement, depression, suicide) through a comic lens. While Wong doesn’t know the answer to the questions she raises, she puts the onus on herself to figure it out through humor, wit, and heaps of unfinished knitting, all in 70 minutes. While the performance is based on the experiences of a particular group, Asian-American women, the issues raised are relevant to a much broader audience – practically anyone who has been displaced from their own culture into another can relate to the pains of trying to fit in, to not being understood by one’s own family and/or the new environment, to feeling like an alien, and more. R is a free computing and graphical software/environment for statistical analysis. This short course, taught by Sai Wang, consists of 3 sections: (1) introduction to R programming basics, such as data objects in R, loops, import/export datasets, along with examples of data manipulation/cleaning; (2) R graphing environment and how to create some basic statistical plots; (3) basic statistical analysis in R, such as t-tests, ANOVA and linear regression. *The Tuesday and Thursday courses are identical. LISA (Virginia Tech’s Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) provides faculty, staff, and student researchers with quality statistical support for free. LISA’s statistical collaborators are trained to help design experiments, analyze and plot data, run statistical software, interpret results, and communicate statistical concepts to non-statisticians. For best results, request a collaboration meeting with LISA before you collect your data. If you are seeking advice on data analysis or report writing after collecting data, please bring to the meeting a clear idea of your overall research goals, specific research questions, cleaned data you may have already collected, and the results of any analyses already performed – including any plots or graphs. Visit the Virtual Graduate Life Center  (vGLC), which extends Virginia Tech’s graduate-education community from campus to computer. Participants are needed for a study investigating the effects of job rotation on muscle fatigue and performance. The study consists of 6 separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2 hours) and one screening session. Participants will be compensated $10/hour with a $10 bonus after completing all sessions. Requirements: male or female, age 18-25, low body fat, right handed, 20/20 vision (corrected okay), no recent history of musculoskeletal disorders, and exercise 2-3 times per week. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management announced the application period for the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program Class of 2012. Apply now through Sep 25, 2011. This program helps federal agencies attract outstanding master’s and doctoral students who have a clear interest in excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs. Students who meet all graduate degree requirements, including the completion or successful defense of any required thesis or dissertation, between Sep 1, 2011 and Aug 31, 2012, are eligible to apply in fall 2011 for the PMF class of 2012. This IRB-approved study examines the effects of remote touch and audio channel on communication particularly in instances where the couple has feelings about a topic and when they may disagree. The Outdoor Club at Virginia Tech (OCVT) is organizing a whitewater rafting trip to raft the entire Gauley, upper and lower; 23 miles of river, over a 100 rapids, in 1 day. Take part in one of the best whitewater rafting experiences in the world. Rafters have to be at base camp in WV at 6:00am and will finish rafting at 6:30 pm. Go on a walking tour of Blacksburg with fellow grads, led by Town-of-Blacksburg staff. Explore the original town limits and see some of the oldest structures in

4. STAT SHORT COURSE: WHAT LISA CAN DO FOR YOU, ANT T-TEST/ANOVA TUTORIAL

Taught by Dr. Anne Ryan, this short course will first explain the services provided by the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) and second it will offer t-test and ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) training for researchers. The statistical training will include the discussion of the one sample t-test, the two sample t-test, matched-pairs t-test, ANOVA, and data analysis examples using JMP statistical software. More information>>.

8. LEARN TURKISH AT VT
Starting Wednesday, Sep 7, 6:00pm, Cranwell International Center
Experienced teachers are offering Turkish language classes at the Cranwell International Center through the Intercultural Understanding Club. You don’t need to know any Turkish to start these classes; courses are offered from elementary to advanced levels. For the fall program: One hour-long class per week, four classes in a month. 23. 2011-12 UNIVERSITY-SPONSORED HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN – SIGN UP BY OCT 3
At Virginia Tech, domestic students are encouraged, but not required, to have personal health insurance. 24. NEW GRAD ASSISTANTSHIP POSITION OPEN – 1st posting
VT University Relations is looking to fill a graduate assistantship position asap. The GA will provide desktop support for Windows-based and Mac systems for approximately 50 professionals in University Relations. The GA will also be responsible for handling support requests related to the 4 display units in the Burruss Hall foyer and 8 units in the Visitor and Undergraduate Admission Center. Responsibilities span three distinct buildings on the VT campus, requiring that the GA be flexible and capable of getting from one location to another. Must be proficient in traditional suites of office software (i.e., MS Windows 7, Office) and Mac), as well as specialized software to produce hi def video productions and high quality page-makeup publications, and familiar with Flash and other graphic programs. 25. GRAD ASSISTANTSHIP POSITION OPEN – 2nd posting
VT Department of Music Digital Interactive Sound & Intermedia Studio (DISIS) is looking to fill a GA position as soon as possible. The assistantship includes full tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend (approx. level 7). 26. SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR STUDENT-GRANT PROGRAM

27. RESEARCH STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – 1st posting
Participants are sought for a study about loads on the knees while performing industrial tasks. Participants must be males or females between 18-30, and (1) should not have any current or recent history of ankle, knee and hip joint injury (2) should not experience pain or discomfort while squatting or kneeling on the floor (3) should exercise regularly (4) should have no abnormal health condition. Participants will perform simulated industrial tasks and will be expected to attend just one session lasting for about 2.5 hours. No compensation will be provided. 28. PAID PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY OF 2-WAY COMMUNICATION – 1st posting
Researchers are looking for couples to participate in a study about two-way telecommunication using remote touch and audio channels. Participating couples must be: (1) over 18 years old; (2) have been dating over 1 year or married w/o kids; (3) speak English as the main language with each other; (4) at least one member affiliated with Virginia Tech. This IRB-approved study examines the effects of remote touch and audio channel on communication particularly in instances where the couple has feelings about a topic and when they may disagree. Couple will be situated in two study rooms and asked to have three discussion sessions through audio or remote touch and audio channels. The whole experiment will take 2 hours. 29. RESEARCH SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR HNFE STUDY – 1st posting

Research subjects are wanted for a study to determine whether daily consumption of corn oil/omega-3 fat will influence muscle soreness, damage and inflammation that occurs after weight training. Must consume supplement for 45 days, perform strenuous weight training bout, go through several weeks of weight training program developed by the researchers, and provide seven blood samples over 45 days. Must be healthy males (non-smokers, no orthopedic limitations to exercise; no chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, bleeding, or inflammatory diseases); 18-28; schedule compatible with testing and training.
