6. SPRING COURSE OPEN 2: GRAD 5404 RESEARCH IN INTERNATIONAL CONTEXTS
Offered by the Graduate School, this course gives students different perspectives through discussions of opportunities, challenges and contexts for participation in international research. Topics include international aspects of intellectual property and copyright law, trade law, export control, research ethics, research funding, protection of human and animal subjects. Through discussions and presentations by faculty members from disciplines and who have worked on international initiatives in many different countries, students learn of cultural dimensions of collaboration including work requirements, varying systems of higher education and research, and work-life expectations and logistics for research abroad. 10. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON TRACKING MOTIONS OF HUMAN HAND – 1st posting
Participants are sought for a study on tracking a set of human hand motions. Participants will perform a set of tasks involving basic hand motions and surgical motions including motions with a scalpel handle (without blade) and wearing a non-latex medical glove. Must be 18-35 years old, right-handed, no current or recent history (within 3 months) of musculoskeletal problems, not allergic to double sided tape. Experiments will take about 3 hours (2 sessions with ~1.5h for each) and will be conducted in the Occupational Ergonomics and Biomechanics Lab in the ISE department. 11. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR MULTI-VIEW MANAGEMENT OF DATA STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study to determine the best multi-view management of multivariate data from cognitive radio nodes’ spectrum in a 3D visualization on the web. Participants will be presented a series of image pairs and asked to answer questions about them. Participation takes about 30 minutes. Must be 18 or older and can see properly (not blind nor visually impaired). Participants are needed for a study assessing the use of head-worn display technologies in industry. Must be 18-65 years old; have no current or recent history (1 year) of musculoskeletal disorders. The project involves two lab-based experiments, and you will be invited to participate in one or both.  The first experiment involves navigating in a simulated warehouse environment using both a paper list and “smart” glasses in several experimental conditions in two sessions, a 1-hr preliminary and a 3.5-hr data collection. The second involves simulation of an order-picking task – retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart, and maneuvering a hand cart.  Weights will range 10-35 lbs.  Completing the study requires two sessions: a training session (~1-1.5 hrs) and a data collection session (~1.5-2 hrs). Participants are sought for a research study on assessing the biomechanics of human gait. Participants will be asked to perform a set of tasks involving repeated walking. They should be 18-30 years old, no current or recent history of musculoskeletal problems (no Anterior Cruciate Ligament(ACL) injury and no knee/ankle surgery); exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times/wk). Experiments will take about 3-4 hours and will be conducted in the Locomotion Laboratory in the ISE department. The compensation will be $10/hour. The Math Department will host an event on Friday, Dec 2 that will bring middle school students to campus for a morning of math activities with the goal of encouraging girls to remain interested in math. The Grad–Undergrad Mentorship Program (GUMP) is seeking mentors from all fields to mentor undergrad students considering graduate school. VT and ICAT are hosting the inaugural ACC Smithsonian Creativity and Innovation Festival to be held at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., Oct 13-15, 2017 to showcase each ACC institution’s top projects that highlight creativity and innovation. 12. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR HEAD-WORN DISPLAY TECHNOLOGIES STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study assessing the use of head-worn display technologies in industry. Must be 18-65 years old; have no current or recent history (1 year) of musculoskeletal disorders.

The project involves two lab-based experiments, and you will be invited to participate in one or both.  The first experiment involves navigating in a simulated warehouse environment using both a paper list and “smart” glasses in several experimental conditions in two sessions, a 1-hr preliminary and a 3.5-hr data collection. The second involves simulation of an order-picking task – retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart, and maneuvering a hand cart.  Weights will range 10-35 lbs.  Completing the study requires two sessions: a training session (~1-1.5 hrs) and a data collection session (~1.5-2 hrs). 10. FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION NOW OPEN FOR 2017-18 – 1st posting

VT researchers in urban affairs & planning and psychology are seeking participants for a pilot study on mood states in transport environments. Participants will first complete a short entry questionnaire in Qualtrics, then will be provided with a link to install an Android GPS app called Daynamica (only compatible with Android smartphones ) to track transportation mode, route, and distance of your daily travel. 23. LITTLE HOKIE(TM) HAND-ME-DOWN: DONATIONS ACCEPTED NOV 1-15 – 2nd posting
Give what you can, take what you need! Graduate students with families and children aged 0-10 (and expecting families, too!) are encouraged to participate in a free event to support fellow students with families. You and your family are allowed to peruse donated items in the GLC Multipurpose Room. Bags will be provided at the entrance and you can fill a large bag with as many items as will fit. Donations will be accepted November 1-15 at the GLC Welcome Center (front desk) or at the VT Women’s Center. 24. PARKING CHANGES AT THE INN AT VT- UPDATED – 2nd posting
Students attending a luncheon or event at the Inn at Virginia Tech can park in F/S/V parking on the Inn side of the building with a valid University parking permit. If a student receives a citation, Parking Services can void it if the student has a valid parking permit and documentation for the event. So keep documentation of events you might attend at The Inn and refer to the appeal information on the citation, should you receive one.

26. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON TRAVEL PATTERNS AND MOOD – 1st posting
VT researchers in urban affairs & planning and psychology are seeking participants for a pilot study on mood states in transport environments. Participants will first complete a short entry questionnaire in Qualtrics, then will be provided with a link to install an Android GPS app called Daynamica (only compatible with Android smartphones ) to track transportation mode, route, and distance of your daily travel. Upon completing each trip, you will be asked to report your mood with a brief survey. Must be 18 or older. Ten $50 Amazon gift cards will be awarded randomly to participants who complete a trip survey for at least five trips for one week. 27. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR USER BEHAVIOR DURING ONLINE SEARCHES – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study assessing user behavior and attitudes while performing online search on the web. This project involves a laboratory-based experiment with assigned search tasks to be performed online. While performing these tasks, participants will be asked questions regarding the nature of the tasks. The approximate time for the study is 60 minutes. Must be 10 or older above. For minors (age 10-17) to participate, their parent will need to provide consent in addition to an Assent Form which would be signed by the participant. 29. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR EFFECTS OF INFO DISPLAY STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a study on the effects of different types of information display (i.e. paper-based system, head-down, and head-up display) on walking behaviors. Participants will be asked to perform a cognitive task while walking on a treadmill. Different display types will also be used. Must be 18-35; no current or recent history (1 year) of musculoskeletal problems; normal or corrected to normal vision; fluent in English; have a smartphone or experience in using smartphones. Participants will be asked to perform walking tasks with different information presentation methods in a lab in the ISE department.
