6. RESEARCH A LA MODE PRESENTS: VIRGINIA VOLCANOES – EVIDENCE FOR A PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE EASTERN NORTH AMERICAN MARGIN

After the break-up of the last super continent, Pangea, the Eastern North American segment developed in to what has been traditionally viewed as a passive margin, meaning tectonic activity is minimal. However, Virginia records two volcanic events after the break-up of Pangea, suggesting that the Eastern North American Margin should in fact be considered a "passive aggressive" margin. By studying the volcanoes of Virginia, we can start to better understand the complicated history associated with super continent break up from 200 million years ago to today. Give what you can, take what you need! Little Hokie(TM) Hand-Me-Down (formerly Donate and Swap) is the graduate community’s goods exchange and giving initiative. Donations of new and gently used items for grad students with families and families-to-be will be collected Nov 1-15 at the GLC Welcome Desk and the VT Women’s Center during normal business hours. Donations may include maternity items, books, toys, games, clothing, bikes, car seats, strollers, and more! Goods will be available to students and their families in the GLC Welcome Center on Nov 15, 9:00a – 6:00p, and to staff and their families on Nov 16, 9:00a-12:00p. Bags will be provided. 15. PARKING CHANGES AT THE INN AT VT- UPDATED
Students attending a luncheon or event at the Inn at Virginia Tech can park in F/S/V parking on the Inn side of the building with a valid University parking permit. If a student receives a citation, Parking Services can void it if the student has a valid parking permit and documentation for the event. So keep documentation of events you might attend at The Inn and refer to the appeal information on the citation, should you receive one.

16. GSA TRAVEL FUND PROGRAM APPLICATION – OCT 16-22
The Graduate Student Assembly’s Travel Fund Program will open for applications on October 16 and close on October 22 at 11:59PM. 18. PEO INTERNNATIONAL PEACE SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTL GRAD WOMEN – 3rd posting
This scholarship is designed for women who are qualified for admission to full-time graduate study, working toward a graduate degree in the college or university she will attend. Requirements: Applicants must not hold U.S. or Canadian citizenship or permanent residency; must have a full year of course-work remaining and be enrolled and on campus for the entire school year. Doctoral students who have completed coursework and are working on dissertation only are not eligible as first-time applicants. The maximum scholarship for one year of study is $12,500, based upon need (year runs from August to August). 22. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – 1st posting
Participants needed for a study investigating conflicts between school life and family life. Looking for students raising a child and enrolled in full-time graduate program for at least one year. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR EFFECTS OF INFO DISPLAY STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are sought for a study on the effects of different types of information display (i.e. paper-based system, head-down, and head-up display) on walking behaviors. Participants will be asked to perform a cognitive task while walking on a treadmill. Different display types will also be used. Must be 18-35; no current or recent history (1 year) of musculoskeletal problems; normal or corrected to normal vision; fluent in English; have a smartphone or experience in using smartphones. Participants will be asked to perform walking tasks with different information presentation methods in a lab in the ISE department. 24. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – 3rd posting
Students are invited in a Virginia Tech study investigating the stability, comfort and usability of different arm brace designs.  Must be 18 years or older and not have current or recent (past 1 year) history of musculoskeletal injuries. Participants will be asked to perform simulated activities of daily living (e.g. opening an envelope) with five different arm braces.  One experimental (2-3 hours long) is required to complete the study. 16. PEO INTERNNATIONAL PEACE SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTL GRAD WOMEN – 2nd posting
This scholarship is designed for women who are qualified for admission to full-time graduate study, working toward a graduate degree in the college or university she will attend. Requirements: Applicants must not hold U.S. or Canadian citizenship or permanent residency; must have a full year of course-work remaining and be enrolled and on campus for the entire school year. Doctoral students who have completed coursework and are working on dissertation only are not eligible as first-time applicants. 23. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – 2nd postin
Students are invited in a Virginia Tech study investigating the stability, comfort and usability of different arm brace designs.  Must be 18 years or older and not have current or recent (past 1 year) history of musculoskeletal injuries. Participants will be asked to perform simulated activities of daily living (e.g. opening an envelope) with five different arm braces.  One experimental (2-3 hours long) is required to complete the study. Applications are accepted for VT graduate student mentors to VT-Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program (B2B program) to work with Virginia community colleges to increase the number of transfer students pursuing degrees and research career paths in biomedical and behavioral sciences and provide research experiences, skills development, activities and support. Applications are accepted for VT graduate student mentors to VT-Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program (B2B program) to work with Virginia community colleges to increase the number of transfer students pursuing degrees and research career paths in biomedical and behavioral sciences and provide research experiences, skills development, activities and support. Mentors are paired with 1-2 undergraduates and will be expected to attend training, communicate with the students for min. 1 hr/m, attend 1 meeting/m (dates tentatively set for 9/16, 10/21 and 11/11, 4:30-8 pm on VT campus) and possible social events. VT Helping PAWS (Pet Assisted Wellness Service) is a therapy animal program at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine that provides an opportunity for students/faculty/staff and their pets to bring companionship and animal-assisted therapy for the community. The group visits Newman Library, Squires Student Center, and other places around campus on a regular basis. 27. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DIETARY STUDY IN HNFE – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study to determine the validity of an updated dietary intake assessment method (questionnaire). Must be 18 years of age or older to participate. The study involves 3 visits (over a one month period) to the VT campus. Each visit will be less than 30 minutes and will include 3 urine samples to measure hydration status and a short demographics survey. Participants will be asked to complete several questionnaires on beverage intake frequency, leisure-time physical activity, and health literacy level. The study will also include 2 dietary recalls by phone, each lasting between 10 to 15 minutes. Participants will be compensated a total of $15 upon successful completion of all study visits. 28. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE STUDY – 3rd posting
Graduate students are invited to participate in an athletic performance study conducted by the Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab. This study will examine landing mechanics in healthy control subjects. Subjects will perform several jumping/landing and hopping tasks while equipped with 3D motion capture markers and in-shoe pressure sensors. Must be between the ages of 18-35, must participate in athletic activities at least 3 times per week, and will have had no leg injuries in the past six months that have kept them from performing athletic activities for more than two days, and no leg injuries at all in the last two months. Testing will take place in the Granata Lab during two separate sessions one week apart. The first session will take 60-90 minutes to complete and the second session will take 30 minutes to complete. 14. GRAD 5314: FUTURE INDUSTRIAL PROFESSIONAL IN SCI & ENG
Provides guidance for M.S. and Ph.D. students who plan on industrial science and/or engineering careers. Consists of a series of lectures and practical exercises to prepare students for entering an industrial technology (research and development) environment. Performance in industrial interviews, personal evaluations, team projects, career pathways, intellectual property information and description and application of widely used project management tools and evaluation methods will be integrated into the course. Differences in career opportunities between large established companies and small start-up companies will be discussed. (3 cr, Mon 2:30-5:15)

15. GRAD 5144: COMMUNICATING SCIENCE COURSE OFFERED – 2nd posting
The course uses theatre improvisational games and interview and writing exercises to help participants become more comfortable with and effective at communicating their research to those outside their specialties. Although its emphasis is on communication to non-scientists, students who have completed this course report that their presentations for committee meetings, lab meetings, and professional association conferences improve as well. To accommodate the cycle of work in grad students’ lives at the beginning and end of the semester, the course (2 credits) is compressed into ten sessions. A new 2-credit course will meet once a week (Thu 6-8 pm) to discuss readings about “the digital self,” identify best practices for maintaining an online identity in your fields, and get hands-on experience with web publishing and social media tools. VT Helping PAWS (Pet Assisted Wellness Service) is a therapy animal program at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine that provides an opportunity for students/faculty/staff and their pets to bring companionship and animal-assisted therapy for the community. The group visits Newman Library, Squires Student Center, and other places around campus on a regular basis. Participants are sought for a study to determine the validity of an updated dietary intake assessment method (questionnaire). Must be 18 years of age or older to participate. The study involves 3 visits (over a one month period) to the VT campus. Each visit will be less than 30 minutes and will include 3 urine samples to measure hydration status and a short demographics survey. Participants will be asked to complete several questionnaires on beverage intake frequency, leisure-time physical activity, and health literacy level. The study will also include 2 dietary recalls by phone, each lasting between 10 to 15 minutes. Participants will be compensated a total of $15 upon successful completion of all study visits. Graduate students are invited to participate in an athletic performance study conducted by the Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab. This study will examine landing mechanics in healthy control subjects. Subjects will perform several jumping/landing and hopping tasks while equipped with 3D motion capture markers and in-shoe pressure sensors. Must be between the ages of 18-35, must participate in athletic activities at least 3 times per week, and will have had no leg injuries in the past six months that have kept them from performing athletic activities for more than two days, and no leg injuries at all in the last two months. Testing will take place in the Granata Lab during two separate sessions one week apart. The first session will take 60-90 minutes to complete and the second session will take 30 minutes to complete. 6. GRAD 5144: COMMUNICATING SCIENCE COURSE OFFERED – 1st posting
The course uses theatre improvisational games and interview and writing exercises to help participants become more comfortable with and effective at communicating their research to those outside their specialties. Although its emphasis is on communication to non-scientists, students who have completed this course report that their presentations for committee meetings, lab meetings, and professional association conferences improve as well. To accommodate the cycle of work in grad students’ lives at the beginning and end of the semester, the course (2 credits) is compressed into ten sessions. 7. GRAD 5984: PROFESSIONAL DIGITAL IDENTITY SEMINAR
Have you been meaning to create a personal website but don’t know how to get started? Intimidated by the thought of publishing your scholarship online? Unsure about how to manage your social media presence when you begin looking for a job? If so, read on! A new 2-credit course will meet once a week (Thu 6-8 pm) to discuss readings about “the digital self,” identify best practices for maintaining an online identity in your fields, and get hands-on experience with web publishing and social media tools. You don’t need to have any special technical skills to take the course. This course can be used as elective credits for the Preparing the Future Professoriate certificate, and you can choose a graded or pass/fail option. The Virginia Cognitive System Engineering (VACSE) Lab is recruiting participants for a research study involving the use of eye-trackers and brain activity/EEG sensor to study inspection performance on manufacturing components. Participants will inspect manufacturing components while their eye gaze and cortical activity is recorded with commercial eye trackers and brain sensor.The study takes around 2.5 hrs of your time and you receive $10/hr in compensation. There is minimal risk involved with this study besides mild discomfort from wearing the eye-tracking glasses and brain sensor/EEG headset. (IRB #15-873) Must be 18 or older to participate. 12. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY TO EVALUATE HEAD-WORN DISPLAY TECHNOLOGIES – 2nd  posting
Participants are needed for a study assessing the use of head-worn display technologies in industry. Must be 18-65 years old; no current or recent history (1 year) of musculoskeletal disorders; no glass wearer. This project involves two laboratory-based experiments, with participants invited to one or both.  Study 1: You will be required to navigate a simulated warehouse environment using both a paper list and “smart” glasses in several experimental conditions.  Completing the study requires two sessions: a preliminary (< 1 hr) and a data collection (~2-2.5 hrs). Study 2: You will be required to simulate an order-picking task – retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart, and maneuvering a hand cart while using either a paper list or smart glasses.  Box weights will range from 10 lbs to 35 lbs.  Completing the study requires two sessions: a training session (~1-1.5 hrs) and a data collection session (~3.5-4 hrs).
