4. PT WAGE POSITION IN WOMEN’S CTR: GENDER-BASED VIOLANCE VICTIM ADVOCATE – 1st posting
The Women’s Center is searching for a part-time Gender-Based Violence Victim Advocate for a 20-hrs/wk position funded by a Department of Criminal Justice Services grant. The Advocate provides crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy and support to students, faculty, and staff impacted by gender-based violence. 5. PT WAGE POSITION FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS – 1st posting
University Studies is seeking academic coaches who meet with a roster of 10-15 students at least 3-4 times per semester. Coaches will collaborate with there students to create individualized goals and educational plans for the semester, focusing on time management, use of existing campus resources, and problem solving. They will also aid students in exploring majors and introduce them to the Pathways Planner tool. Coaches support students and supplement academic advising through ongoing communication with advisors. 6. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON INSPECTION PERFORMANCE IN MANUFACTURING – 1st posting
The Virginia Cognitive System Engineering (VACSE) Lab is recruiting participants for a research study involving the use of eye-trackers and brain activity/EEG sensor to study inspection performance on manufacturing components. Participants will inspect manufacturing components while their eye gaze and cortical activity is recorded with commercial eye trackers and brain sensor. The study takes around 2.5 hrs of your time and you receive $10/hr in compensation. There is minimal risk involved with this study besides mild discomfort from wearing the eye-tracking glasses and brain sensor/EEG headset. (IRB #15-873) Must be 18 or older to participate. 7. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY TO EVALUATE HEAD-WORN DISPLAY TECHNOLOGIES – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study assessing the use of head-worn display technologies in industry. Must be 18-65 years old; no current or recent history (1 year) of musculoskeletal disorders; no glass wearer. This project involves two laboratory-based experiments, with participants invited to one or both.  Study 1: You will be required to navigate a simulated warehouse environment using both a paper list and “smart” glasses in several experimental conditions.  Completing the study requires two sessions: a preliminary (< 1 hr) and a data collection (~2-2.5 hrs). Study 2: You will be required to simulate an order-picking task – retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart, and maneuvering a hand cart while using either a paper list or smart glasses.  Box weights will range from 10 lbs to 35 lbs.  Completing the study requires two sessions: a training session (~1-1.5 hrs) and a data collection session (~3.5-4 hrs). 8. MALE MILITARY VETERANS SOUGHT FOR INTERVIEW ABOUT TECHNOLOGY TO ASSIST WITH COMMUNITY INTEGRATION – 1st posting
Male military veterans aged 18-35 are recruited for a 2-hour interview to discuss requirements for a technology for veterans to use to help them integrate into their community. Interviews are audio-recorded and will take place at a location convenient for the veteran. Compensation for participation is $15/hr. 9. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON DIET’S INFUELNCE ON MUSCLE METABOLISM  -1st posting
Volunteers are sought for a study examining how diet influences muscle metabolism. Participants must be: Between ages 18-40; females must be on monophasic oral contraceptive and not pregnant; not currently taking any medications (other than above); non-smokers; without any major medical problems; willing to eat a high fat diet for 5 days. 1. SHORT STAT COURSE: DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS
Tuesday, Oct 7, 5:30-7:30pm, GLC Room G
When researchers properly design an experiment, they are able to control important factors associated with the outcome of interest, therefore collecting useful data that may provide strong evidence for causality. In this short course, presenter Ana Maria Ortega Villa will discuss the three basic principles of design of experiments: 1) randomization (to limit bias)  2) replication (to improve estimation of effects), and 3) local control of error (to reduce variability from known sources).  Participants will use two example data sets to illustrate the three principles and their application to two straightforward design scenarios, and enter and analyze the data in JMP, a software that can be acquired in Torgesen Bridge. This course is aimed for students with no design of experiments background and assumes that the audience is familiar with concepts such as hypothesis testing and p-value. 6. PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT FELLOWS PROGRAM – APPLY OCT 1-15
The PMF Program is a flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. The program attracts and selects the best candidates possible, but is designed with a more narrow focus – developing a cadre of potential government leaders. A unique aspect of the program is the STEM track, which gives applicants in a STEM career the opportunity to apply specifically to this program and be considered only for STEM jobs in agencies across government. 11. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR ONLINE SURVEY ABOUT ACADEMIC INTEGRITY – 1st posting
Graduate students are sought to complete an anonymous 20-minute online survey about academic integrity. Must be at least 18 years old to participate. This study examines the current state of graduate-student understanding about academic integrity. Results will be used to better understand how graduate students learn about academic integrity, how it affects them, and what measures are in place to preserve academic integrity at Virginia Tech. Results of this survey may be used for publication. Participation is voluntary and anonymous; results from this study will be used to enhance graduate education. 12. VOLUNTERS SOUGHT TO REVIEW UGRAD ESSAYS ON VT COMMON BOOK -2nd posting
Dr. Megan O’Neill, Assoc. Director of First Year Experiences, is seeking graduate student reviewers to help review common-book short essays written by undergraduates. Information about the common book program can be found at http://www.commonbook.vt.edu/. Time commitment ranges from a few to several hours depending on reading speed, between Oct 15-Nov 1. Delivery will be online, using a rubric to score 1-2-page essays. No commenting needed. 13. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR GOOGLE GLASS STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a study investigating the safety and health issues during order-picking using augmented reality technologies. Must be: 18-40 years old; no current or recent history (1 year) of physical disorder affecting shoulder, knee, lower back and ankle joints; no eyeglasses; exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times per week); must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. Participants will perform order-picking tasks (i.e., retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart and maneuvering a hand cart) using a paper pick-list and a Google glass.  During data collection, participants will be asked to wear a wearable motion capture system. SHORT STAT COURSE: SAS – MIXED MODELS
Wednesday, Oct 15, 8:00am-12:00pm, Torgersen 1100 (Learning Studio)
Taught by Dr. Michael Speed, this intro to mixed models uses SAS Enterprise Guide to analyze linear mixed models using PROC MIXED. Topics include analyzing data with random effects; learning how to determine what is being tested for the fixed effects; fitting random coefficient models; analyzing repeated measures data; and performing residual and influence diagnostic analysis. A case study will be presented to illustrate all of the concepts and procedures presented in the workshop. As part of the Global Academic Program at SAS, Michael Speed teaches classes for faculty and students and conducts research in linear models, generalized linear models, nonlinear mixed models, and data mining. WORKSHOP ON REPRODUCIBLE RESEARCH

The first part of this workshop will being with a discussion of the current reproducibility crisis in science, followed by a discussion of techniques, workflows, and tools (like R and Open Science Framework) that researchers can use to increase the reproducibility of their work. The target audience is graduate students, post-docs, and professors involved in quantitative research who are interested in learning more about reproducible practices. The National Science Foundation is soliciting applications for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) until the posted deadlines in late October and early November 2014. The SAASS Study Hall Head Monitor reports to the Assistant Director for Student Athlete Academic Support Services in charge of study hall and is responsible for maintaining an environment for student-athletes that is conducive to studying. 22. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR “SLOW DOWN” PROGRAM FOR MOTHERS – 2nd posting
Are you a mother with a child in grades K-5 for the 2014-5 school year? Would you like to learn a new way to approach eating with your family? Do you drink three or more sugar-sweetened drinks each day? (i.e. Soda, sweet tea, sports drinks, specialty coffee, fruit punch/juice, etc.) This program will help you learn about slowing down for meals and reconnecting with food. You will learn strategies for enjoying food and sharing that joy with your family. Participation involves completing a few short questionnaires and providing a salivary sample during the introductory meeting and participating in four group educational sessions. Each of the first three group meetings should take 60 minutes and the fourth will be 90 minutes. Light refreshments will be provided. 4. SHORT STAT COURSES SCHEDULE FOR SUMMER 2014: BASICS OF R
Wednesday, Jun 18, 4:30-6:30pm. 1080 Torgersen Hall
Taught by Olawale Awe, this introductory course covers programming basics in R (a powerful, versatile, and free statistical programming language), including the definition and manipulation of data objects, loops, importing/exporting data, and simple data summaries. These concepts will be illustrated using both the Home Prices Data and also the National Longitudinal Mortality Survey. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components and attendees will have the opportunity to write, modify, and execute R codes for these data. This intro session is part of a three-course series which assumes no previous coding experience in R or any other language. The intended audience includes researchers who want to gain basic exposure to R with the ultimate goal of incorporating R into their research programs. More experienced users may wish to skip this course and attend subsequent courses on statistical and graphical techniques using R. 16. REGISTER NOW FOR TEAM DESIGN CONTEST FOR GRAD HOUSING COMPLEX – 2nd posting
Exercise your imagination and creativity in a short design contest (charrette) based on a real-world project that’s coming to Blacksburg. The challenge includes generating conceptual design and naming ideas for a new grad housing complex. Teams of up to three may compete for $100 gift certificates to local restaurants. Background in architecture, landscape architecture or construction is helpful but not required; interdisciplinary teams are encouraged. Paper, sketching tools and some modeling materials will be provided; teams may also use any tools and supplies they bring. The contest will take place on Friday, Sep 20, 1-5pm. Register online>> . Local application deadline is Sep 16, 2013 for this merit-based $15K award for women in doctoral programs. 22. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY – 1st posting
VT-SCORE (VT Signal Control & Operation Research and Education Systems lab) is conducting a driving simulator study to investigate driver behavior, performance, and attention when encountering the yellow light at signalized intersections. This is a multi-state study that looks at the effect of driver experience on driver behavior near traffic signals. The study will take no more than an hour, and your participation can contribute to the development of more intelligent control systems that could reduce crashes at signalized intersections and ultimately save lives. Participation is completely voluntary, and you will get a first-hand experience dealing with interesting driving simulation equipment. You can opt out of the experiment at any time. Must be licensed drivers and at least 18. Researchers are particularly interested in recruiting participants who are originally from VA, MD, and PA. 23. FOUR- TO FOUR-AND-A-HALF-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN SOUGHT FOR STUDY – 1st posting
The VT C.A.P. Lab in the Psychology Department is conducting a new study focusing on children’s developing ability to control their actions during games like Simon Says. Researchers are looking for 4- to 4.5-year-old children to visit the lab for one to two hours. During this visit, researchers will play some fun word and movement games with participants. 24. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON PSYCHOLOGY OF MUSIC PREFERENCES – 2nd posting
This study aims to develop the fullest picture to date of people’s likes and dislikes in the field of music, examining music genre; the emotions that music arouse and personality, and how all these variables inter-relate. This study is the first to bring all of the variables together, allowing researchers to understand the relationships among variables and their impact. This study is organized by Queen’s University, an Irish University partnered with VT. Participation involves completing a number of questionnaires that are designed to measure a number of personal characteristics. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and you can withdraw at any stage. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. 26. PARTICIPATE IN GRAD HOUSING PREFERENCES SURVEY – 2nd posting
Dedicated graduate student and graduate family housing has been a concern of graduate students, the GSA and the Graduate School for several years now. The Graduate School was contacted by local developers for thoughts and suggestions about ways to improve the variety and availability of graduate housing within the Town of Blacksburg. We have developed this survey to inquire about your interest and needs for graduate housing. A site has already been identified and the local developers intend to begin construction of new housing in the South Main Kroger vicinity within the next 18-24 months. The survey will take approximately 10-12 minutes to complete. The information you provide will help us better understand the housing needs of our current and future graduate student community.
