5. WEB ACCESSIBILITY ASSISTANTSHIP FOR 2017-2018- 1st posting
Assistive Technologies, a unit of Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS), is seeking a Graduate Assistant for 2017-2018 to work on accessible web design and testing. The successful applicant will have the unique opportunity of learning assistive technologies, web accessibility, and gaining practical experience by working 20 hours per week in the Assistive Technologies Lab. The Web Accessibility Assistant will support several projects related to the accessibility of websites for people with disabilities including the maintenance and improvement of the accessible WordPress theme used by TLOS and others across campus. Additionally, the Web Accessibility Assistant will review department and university websites using web accessibility testing tools and procedures. Required qualifications include strong communication and design skills, fundamental web developmental experience, such as HML and CSS, experience with a content management system, experience with Windows and Mac operating systems, and demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technical skills. 6. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY ABOUT METABOLIC COST OF LIFTING – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a research study about metabolic cost of lifting with and without a wearable exoskeleton. They must be 18-65 years old with no recent or prior musculoskeletal disorders and back injuries. They should be able to comfortably lift about 25% of their bodyweights from the floor to the waist height. They are asked to perform a variety of lifting tasks both with and without the exoskeleton. There are two experimental sessions for this study and the compensation rate is $10/hour. During this session, we will also set up a special recording software, My Screen Recorder Pro 4, on the device (laptop) you intend to use for scholarly research activities. This software would begin the recording process when you start searching on the search engine of your choice and stop when you ask it to stop. The study lasts three weeks and your search activities will be logged during this period and you will be asked about your searches and search choices, including whether you choose to use our technology, Critisearch.  Participants will receive a $25 gift card. The 3DI group is seeking volunteers to participate in a research study with  augmented reality (AR) technologies. The team is investigating the best ways to interact with AR, and this study compares various methods of interaction with virtual data and information. The study will make use of state-of-the-art AR technologies such as the Microsoft Hololens. The project is supervised by Dr. Doug Bowman in Computer Science. The 3DI group is seeking volunteers to participate in a research study with  augmented reality (AR) technologies. The team is investigating the best ways to interact with AR, and this study compares various methods of interaction with virtual data and information. The study will make use of state-of-the-art AR technologies such as the Microsoft Hololens. The project is supervised by Dr. Doug Bowman in Computer Science. Volunteers needed for a study examining whether delayed discounting (do you want a small reward now or a larger reward later?) is related to health, diet, and physical activity level. Must be: male or female, any race and ethnicity; ages 18-65; Body Mass Index between 22 and 40 kg/m2; not trying to gain or lose weight; have not gained or lost weight in the past six months; willing to participate in two testing sessions of about 5 hours; willing to have your blood drawn, body fat assessed, an oral glucose tolerance test, fill out questionnaires related to diet and physical activity, and wear a physical activity monitor for 4 days. Volunteers are needed at the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market during the summer to help run the information booth on market days of Wednesdays and Saturdays in 3-hour shifts. 8. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY WITH CHILDREN WITH ASD – 3rd posting
Participants sought for research treatment study that targets both child language skills and parent stress. Researchers will teach language skills to children 1.5-6 year-old children using Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), while adding either mindfulness-based techniques or psycho-education material to provide new ways to increase well-being. There will be a 50% chance of being placed in the mindfulness group. Parents and children will complete a pre-treatment screening visit, 15 treatment visits (11 group sessions 2 hours in length targeting PRT skills, 4 individual PRT sessions), a post-treatment visit and a follow-up visit. Only parents will attend the group meetings. There is slight risk to participating, due to time commitment required to learn and practice a new set of skills as well as a new environment for children. VT researchers seek young adults with Social Anxiety Disorder SAD for a treatment study. Participants will receive a new computer-based intervention with automated performance feedback with the goal to help people improve their ability to recognize and accurately interpret social signals in other people. Participants will be offered a no-cost experimental treatment and be compensated up to $80.00. Must be 18-29 of age; have a SAD diagnosis or strongly suspect SAD. Participants will take part in 1-2 assessment visits to confirm fit for study, lasting about 2 hrs. If eligible, complete 6 treatment sessions during which you will wear a HoloLens (i.e. virtual reality headset) to interact with a computerized program, like in a video-game.
