3. GRAD-UGRAD MENTORSHIP PROGRAM SEEKING MENTORS  – 1st posting
The Grad–Undergrad Mentorship Program (GUMP) is seeking mentors from all fields to mentor undergrad students considering graduate school. Ugrads and grads are matched according to their area of study, allowing the undergrad to get a taste for graduate school and to ask questions of current graduate students. Each graduate mentor will be matched with 1–3 mentees, who will shadow them at convenient times during the spring semester. Mentoring can help build leadership skills and provide an experience to discuss with future employers. Graduate students will coordinate mentoring activities independently with their undergraduate mentees. GUMP is sponsored by the Graduate Student Association (GSA). 4. CALL FOR PROJECTS FOR ACC SMITHSONIAN CREATIVY & INNOVATION FESTIVAL
VT and ICAT are hosting the inaugural ACC Smithsonian Creativity and Innovation Festival to be held at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., Oct 13-15, 2017 to showcase each ACC institution’s top projects that highlight creativity and innovation. The event may draw a crowd of 28,000.  Fully completed projects are sought, as the timeline does not allow for project development. 9. PROGRAM ASSISTANT WAGE POSITION OPENING – 1st posting
The VT Language and Culture is seeking a program assistant to work primarily with 25 Argentine college students to coordinate transportation, travel, program calendar, and events; help lead trips and activities (mainly on weekends); process invoices and keep accurate program accounting records; maintain participant files; and collect data and documents for registration and reporting purposes. Position begins Jan 2 and ends Feb 29. Must have experience providing administrative or program support in a professional office environment; excellent interpersonal and communications skills to effectively work with faculty, staff and international students; working knowledge of VT policies and procedures; have acceptable and safe driving record. Should be able to drive a 12-passenger van. Hours are flexible, including evenings and weekends, up to 40 hours weekly. Hourly pay up to $15/hr. VT LCI seeks a student aide to work closely with the Program Assistant and help 25 Argentine students adjust to their new surroundings in the US and on campus. The Office of Budget and Financial Planning is seeking an inter/grad assistant for the Auxiliary budget functions of the office for a 9-month assistantship with paid summer internship possibility to assist in budget development, monitoring and reporting processes. 12. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR HEAD-WORN DISPLAY TECHNOLOGIES STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study assessing the use of head-worn display technologies in industry. Must be 18-65 years old; have no current or recent history (1 year) of musculoskeletal disorders.

The project involves two lab-based experiments, and you will be invited to participate in one or both.  The first experiment involves navigating in a simulated warehouse environment using both a paper list and “smart” glasses in several experimental conditions in two sessions, a 1-hr preliminary and a 3.5-hr data collection. The second involves simulation of an order-picking task – retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart, and maneuvering a hand cart.  Weights will range 10-35 lbs.  Completing the study requires two sessions: a training session (~1-1.5 hrs) and a data collection session (~1.5-2 hrs). 13. PARENTS AND ADOLESCENTS SOUGHT FOR SOCIAL & ACADEMIC EXPERIENCES SUTDY – 1st posting
Parents and adolescents (ages 13-18) are  needed for VT study of social and academic experiences.  With their parent and a same-gender close friend, teens will be asked to complete questionnaires, conversation tasks, and a speech task. Participation should last 1.5 hours.  Study is located on VT Blacksburg campus. Teens, their participating friend, and participating parent are each given $10 gift certificate. 14. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON ASSESSING THE BIOMECHANICS OF HUMAN GAIT – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a research study on assessing the biomechanics of human gait. Participants will be asked to perform a set of tasks involving repeated walking. Must be 18-30 years old, no current or recent history of musculoskeletal problems; exercise on a regular basis (2-3/wk). Experiments will take about 3-4 hours and will be conducted in the Locomotion Laboratory in the ISE department. Compensation:  $10/hour. 15. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH DAY – 2nd posting
The Math Department will host an event on Friday, Dec 2 that will bring middle school students to campus for a morning of math activities with the goal of encouraging girls to remain interested in math. Volunteers are needed to help lead or aid activities, guide students on campus, and help with other day-of tasks, including setting up starting at 8am and cleaning up finishing by 2pm. 14. FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION NOW OPEN FOR 2017-18 – 2nd posting
The 2017-18 FAFSA is available now!  For 2017-18 the application will use your 2015 federal income tax information.  The VT Financial Aid office strongly recommends that you use the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to transfer your tax information from the IRS website to the FAFSA; uou will be given this option when you submit the 1718 FAFSA.  While there is no specific FAFSA deadline for graduate students, it is recommended that you complete the FAFSA as soon as possible to that Financial Aid has enough time to review and prepare your financial aid award for the upcoming year.  Posted on behalf of University Scholarship and Financial Aid office, sbreed@vt.edu.

Participants are needed for a study assessing user behavior and attitudes while performing online web search.  This project involves a lab-based experiment during which participants carry out assigned search tasks online and answer questions regarding the nature of the tasks. Experiment time about 60 min. Must be at least 10 or older. 23. STUDENT VETERANS SOUGHT FOR INTERVIEW ABOUT THEIR TRANSITION FROM MILITARY TO COLLEGE – 3rd posting
Student veterans (both ugrad and grad) born after 1980 and attending a public or private four-year or two-year college in Virginia (doesn’t have to be VT), who have completed at least 9 hours each semester during the last two consecutive semesters (i.e. 9 credits each in Fall and Spring), are recruited to participate in a 45-60-minute interview to discuss their experience of transitioning from the military to college. Interviews are audio-recorded and will take place online at a convenient time for the veteran. 10. FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION NOW OPEN FOR 2017-18 – 1st posting
The 2017-18 FAFSA is available now!  For 2017-18 the application will use your 2015 federal income tax information.  The VT Financial Aid office strongly recommends that you use the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to transfer your tax information from the IRS website to the FAFSA; you will be given this option when you submit the 1718 FAFSA.  While there is no specific FAFSA deadline for graduate students, it is recommended that you complete the FAFSA as soon as possible to that Financial Aid has enough time to review and prepare your financial aid award for the upcoming year.  Posted on behalf of University Scholarship and Financial Aid office, sbreed@vt.edu.

20. STUDENT VETERANS SOUGHT FOR INTERVIEW ABOUT THEIR TRANSITION FROM MILITARY TO COLLEGE – 2nd posting
Student veterans (both ugrad and grad) born after 1980 and attending a public or private four-year or two-year college in Virginia (doesn’t have to be VT), who have completed at least 9 hours each semester during the last two consecutive semesters (i.e. 9 credits each in Fall and Spring), are recruited to participate in a 45-60-minute interview to discuss their experience of transitioning from the military to college. VT researchers in urban affairs & planning and psychology are seeking participants for a pilot study on mood states in transport environments. Participants will first complete a short entry questionnaire in Qualtrics, then will be provided with a link to install an Android GPS app called Daynamica (only compatible with Android smartphones ) to track transportation mode, route, and distance of your daily travel. Upon completing each trip, you will be asked to report your mood with a brief survey. Must be 18 or older. Ten $50 Amazon gift cards will be awarded randomly to participants who complete a trip survey for at least five trips for one week. After the break-up of the last super continent, Pangea, the Eastern North American segment developed in to what has been traditionally viewed as a passive margin, meaning tectonic activity is minimal. However, Virginia records two volcanic events after the break-up of Pangea, suggesting that the Eastern North American Margin should in fact be considered a "passive aggressive" margin. By studying the volcanoes of Virginia, we can start to better understand the complicated history associated with super continent break up from 200 million years ago to today. Students are invited in a Virginia Tech study investigating the stability, comfort and usability of different arm brace designs.  Must be 18 years or older and not have current or recent (past 1 year) history of musculoskeletal injuries. Students are invited in a Virginia Tech study investigating the stability, comfort and usability of different arm brace designs.  Must be 18 years or older and not have current or recent (past 1 year) history of musculoskeletal injuries. Participants will be asked to perform simulated activities of daily living (e.g. opening an envelope) with five different arm braces.  One experimental (2-3 hours long) is required to complete the study. Applications are accepted for VT graduate student mentors to VT-Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program (B2B program) to work with Virginia community colleges to increase the number of transfer students pursuing degrees and research career paths in biomedical and behavioral sciences and provide research experiences, skills development, activities and support. All new graduate students need to complete Haven Plus, an online course on the important issues of sexual harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. This course is part of the university’s comprehensive gender-based violence prevention program and meets the requirements of the federal Campus SaVE Act. 26. VT HELPING PAWS IS RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS – 3rd posting
VT Helping PAWS (Pet Assisted Wellness Service) is a therapy animal program at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine that provides an opportunity for students/faculty/staff and their pets to bring companionship and animal-assisted therapy for the community. The group visits Newman Library, Squires Student Center, and other places around campus on a regular basis. Join the organization and become a therapy team through Pet Partners, a national pet therapy organization.  The current focus includes dogs & cats, but there is potential for other species such as rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, & birds to join through Pet Partners.  Volunteers who do not have their own pet are still welcome to help with training classes and at events!  There will be an Interest Meeting at the Blacksburg Library on Tuesday Aug 30, 6:00pm; register at www.tinyurl.com/vthpaws. 27. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DIETARY STUDY IN HNFE – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study to determine the validity of an updated dietary intake assessment method (questionnaire). Must be 18 years of age or older to participate. The study involves 3 visits (over a one month period) to the VT campus. Each visit will be less than 30 minutes and will include 3 urine samples to measure hydration status and a short demographics survey. Participants will be asked to complete several questionnaires on beverage intake frequency, leisure-time physical activity, and health literacy level. The study will also include 2 dietary recalls by phone, each lasting between 10 to 15 minutes. Participants will be compensated a total of $15 upon successful completion of all study visits. Graduate students are invited to participate in an athletic performance study conducted by the Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab. This study will examine landing mechanics in healthy control subjects. Subjects will perform several jumping/landing and hopping tasks while equipped with 3D motion capture markers and in-shoe pressure sensors. Must be between the ages of 18-35, must participate in athletic activities at least 3 times per week, and will have had no leg injuries in the past six months that have kept them from performing athletic activities for more than two days, and no leg injuries at all in the last two months. Testing will take place in the Granata Lab during two separate sessions one week apart. The first session will take 60-90 minutes to complete and the second session will take 30 minutes to complete. 9. ONLINE COURSE FOR NEW GRAD STUDENTS
All new graduate students need to complete Haven Plus, an online course on the important issues of sexual harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. This course is part of the university’s comprehensive gender-based violence prevention program and meets the requirements of the federal Campus SaVE Act. Comparative study of international intellectual property systems; international treaty arrangements for copyrights, patents and trademarks; protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights in foreign markets; policy analysis of the globalized intellectual property system. 14. GRAD 5314: FUTURE INDUSTRIAL PROFESSIONAL IN SCI & ENG
Provides guidance for M.S. and Ph.D. students who plan on industrial science and/or engineering careers. Consists of a series of lectures and practical exercises to prepare students for entering an industrial technology (research and development) environment. Performance in industrial interviews, personal evaluations, team projects, career pathways, intellectual property information and description and application of widely used project management tools and evaluation methods will be integrated into the course. Differences in career opportunities between large established companies and small start-up companies will be discussed. (3 cr, Mon 2:30-5:15)

15. GRAD 5144: COMMUNICATING SCIENCE COURSE OFFERED – 2nd posting
The course uses theatre improvisational games and interview and writing exercises to help participants become more comfortable with and effective at communicating their research to those outside their specialties. Although its emphasis is on communication to non-scientists, students who have completed this course report that their presentations for committee meetings, lab meetings, and professional association conferences improve as well. To accommodate the cycle of work in grad students’ lives at the beginning and end of the semester, the course (2 credits) is compressed into ten sessions. 16. GRAD 5984: PROFESSIONAL DIGITAL IDENTITY SEMINAR – 2nd posting
Have you been meaning to create a personal website but don’t know how to get started? Intimidated by the thought of publishing your scholarship online? Unsure about how to manage your social media presence when you begin looking for a job? If so, read on! A new 2-credit course will meet once a week (Thu 6-8 pm) to discuss readings about “the digital self,” identify best practices for maintaining an online identity in your fields, and get hands-on experience with web publishing and social media tools. You don’t need to have any special technical skills to take the course. This course can be used as elective credits for the Preparing the Future Professoriate certificate, and you can choose a graded or pass/fail option. The Graduate School and University Libraries are co-sponsoring a travel scholarship to attend OpenCon 2016, Nov 12-14 in Washington, DC. 24. VT HELPING PAWS IS RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS – 2nd posting
VT Helping PAWS (Pet Assisted Wellness Service) is a therapy animal program at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine that provides an opportunity for students/faculty/staff and their pets to bring companionship and animal-assisted therapy for the community. The group visits Newman Library, Squires Student Center, and other places around campus on a regular basis. Join the organization and become a therapy team through Pet Partners, a national pet therapy organization.  The current focus includes dogs & cats, but there is potential for other species such as rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, & birds to join through Pet Partners.  Volunteers who do not have their own pet are still welcome to help with training classes and at events!  There will be an Interest Meeting at the Blacksburg Library on Tuesday Aug 30, 6:00pm; register at www.tinyurl.com/vthpaws. 25. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DIETARY STUDY IN HNFE – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a study to determine the validity of an updated dietary intake assessment method (questionnaire). Must be 18 years of age or older to participate. The study involves 3 visits (over a one month period) to the VT campus. Each visit will be less than 30 minutes and will include 3 urine samples to measure hydration status and a short demographics survey. Participants will be asked to complete several questionnaires on beverage intake frequency, leisure-time physical activity, and health literacy level. The study will also include 2 dietary recalls by phone, each lasting between 10 to 15 minutes. Participants will be compensated a total of $15 upon successful completion of all study visits. 26. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE STUDY – 2nd posting
Graduate students are invited to participate in an athletic performance study conducted by the Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab. This study will examine landing mechanics in healthy control subjects. Subjects will perform several jumping/landing and hopping tasks while equipped with 3D motion capture markers and in-shoe pressure sensors. Must be between the ages of 18-35, must participate in athletic activities at least 3 times per week, and will have had no leg injuries in the past six months that have kept them from performing athletic activities for more than two days, and no leg injuries at all in the last two months. Testing will take place in the Granata Lab during two separate sessions one week apart. The first session will take 60-90 minutes to complete and the second session will take 30 minutes to complete.
