31. GRAD INTERN POSITION OPENING – 1st posting
Advanced Research Computing (ARC) is seeking a grad intern to work with ARC scientists and corporate partner, Engility, to develop models and algorithms to support failure prediction on current High Performance Computing clusters within ARC. The successful candidate will work closely with research teams to understand different failure modes and derive statistical models and methods to predict failures. Duties will span from working with raw data to performing complex data analytics. 33. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR VALIDATING DIETARY ASSESSMENT METHODS – 1st posting
HNFE’s Dietary Assessment Laboratory is conducting a study to determine the validity of new dietary intake assessment methods (questionnaires and biomarkers). Must be 18 or older to participate. The study involves 3 visits (over 2-week period) to the VT campus. Each visit will be less than 60 minutes. The study will include one blood draw and two 24-hour urine collections. Participants will be compensated a total of $75 upon successful completion of all study visits. 4. SHORT STATS COURSE FOR GRADS: COMPARING MEANS AND OTHER MEASURES OF LOCATION B/W TWO POPULATIONS BY SIGNIFICANCE TESTS & EFFECT SIZE

Taught by Ting Guan, in this short course participants will compare averages and other measures of location using significance tests and effect size estimates. In classical hypothesis testing, significance tests assume the null hypothesis is true. Then the probability that data as extreme as or more extreme than those observed is calculated. If this probability is very low, then we reject the null hypothesis. The Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis provides these evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. Help VT continue as the fittest college in America! Fit-Ex is an 8-week, online-facilitated healthy eating and physical activity program. Serve as a team captain and recruit 5 other people to join your team and together make goals to improve your health.  The overall goal of the program is for teams to “walk” across Virginia.  15 minutes of physical activity is equivalent to 1 FitEx “mile.” Progress is tracked weekly and participants can see how they match up against other teams. Spring 2016 graduates must electronically submit the Degree or Certificate Conferral Request online (in HokieSpa under Degree Menu) by Mar 1, 2016 for your name to appear in the Commencement Bulletin. PhD and EdD students must also include their dissertation title when submitting the Degree or Certificate Conferral Request for their name to appear in the bulletin. Without this title, your name will not be listed. The information entered electronically is used to order your diploma, so please ensure that the information is correct. A Degree or Certificate Conferral Request fee ($25.00) will be assessed to your student account after you submit your application for degree.

Are you graduating with a master’s or doctoral degree this spring?  If yes, you might be eligible to borrow a free graduate cap and gown from the GSA! This program loans a limited number of graduation gowns and caps to graduate students participating in Spring 2016 graduation ceremonies. Caps and gowns must then be returned to the GSA after the ceremonies. Spring 2016 graduates must electronically submit the Degree or Certificate Conferral Request online (in HokieSpa under Degree Menu) by Mar 1, 2016 for your name to appear in the Commencement Bulletin. PhD and EdD students must also include their dissertation title when submitting the Degree or Certificate Conferral Request for their name to appear in the bulletin. Without this title, your name will not be listed. The information entered electronically is used to order your diploma, so please ensure that the information is correct. A Degree or Certificate Conferral Request fee ($25.00) will be assessed to your student account after you submit your application for degree.

13. THE MESSENGER – DOCUMENTARY SCREENING

This documentary about the decline of songbirds due to human actions such as climate change and pipelines recently came out with limited release, with a special showing scheduled at the Regal theater in Christiansburg. This contemplative documentary explores our deep-seated connection to birds and warns that the uncertain fate of songbirds might mirror our own. Children ages 8-12 are currently being enrolled for a free treatment study for anger and frequent temper outbursts. 25. VT HELPING PAWS IS RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS – 3rd posting
VT Helping PAWS (Pet Assisted Wellness Service) is a therapy animal program at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine that provides an opportunity for students/faculty/staff and their pets to bring companionship and animal-assisted therapy for the community. The group visits Newman Library, Squires Student Center, and other places around campus on a regular basis. Join the organization and become a therapy team through Pet Partners, a national pet therapy organization.  The current focus includes dogs & cats, but there is potential for other species such as rats, rabbits, & guinea pigs to be evaluated through Pet Partners.  Volunteers who do not have their own pet are still welcome to help with training classes and at events! This new study abroad course will provide students with an opportunity to understand water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) issues in Malawi (southeast Africa) through applied research, fieldwork, small group activities, and classroom lectures. 15. THE FLINT WATER CRISIS – A TALK BY VT’S FlintWaterStudy TEAM

Flint, MI is currently in a state of emergency because of unsafe drinking water and a resulting increase in childhood lead poisoning caused by a bad policy decision to save money. Combining citizen science, laboratory experimentation, investigative reporting and social media, and backed by an NSF grant, the team of students and faculty led by Dr. Marc Edwards pulled off an unprecedented scientific “relief effort” that helped expose a widespread lead-in-water problem and galvanized local, state, and federal efforts to protect Flint families and provide safe drinking water. 24. VT HELPING PAWS IS RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS – 2nd posting
VT Helping PAWS (Pet Assisted Wellness Service) is a therapy animal program at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine that provides an opportunity for students/faculty/staff and their pets to bring companionship and animal-assisted therapy for the community. The group visits Newman Library, Squires Student Center, and other places around campus on a regular basis. Join the organization and become a therapy team through Pet Partners, a national pet therapy organization.  The current focus includes dogs & cats, but there is potential for other species such as rats, rabbits, & guinea pigs to be evaluated through Pet Partners.  Volunteers who do not have their own pet are still welcome to help with training classes and at events! THE MESSENGER – DOCUMENTARY SCREENING

18. GRAD ASSISTANT NEEDED IMMEDIATELY – 1st posting
VT research project team is seeking a Graduate Assistant this semester (and possible for summer) for data handling and analysis. The project is based on a grant from National Institute of Justice to empirically examine the so-called “school-to-prison pipeline theory”. The GA will work in an analysis team guided by Yasuo Miyazaki, associate professor in School of Education. Qualifications: responsible person with skills and experience in handling large-scale social and behavioral science data, including merging data files, data cleaning, aggregating and disaggregating data between individual student and school levels, and data analysis; working knowledge of linear models and measurement analysis; strong writing skills; SPSS knowledge and skills desirable. 19. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON SIMULATED AUTOMOBILE ASSEMBLY TASKS – 1st posting
Requirements: Age 18-30; females only; no current or recent history (1 year) of musculoskeletal problems. Participants will be asked to perform a repetitive task simulating automotive trim assembly, involving striking activities with the hand/fist.  The experiment will be done in a laboratory setting in the ISE department. Four sessions (one training + three data collection), compensation: $10 per hour for about 3 hours in each of four sessions + $20 bonus after completion.
