1. SHORT STAT COURSE: DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS
Tuesday, Oct 7, 5:30-7:30pm, GLC Room G
When researchers properly design an experiment, they are able to control important factors associated with the outcome of interest, therefore collecting useful data that may provide strong evidence for causality. In this short course, presenter Ana Maria Ortega Villa will discuss the three basic principles of design of experiments: 1) randomization (to limit bias) 2) replication (to improve estimation of effects), and 3) local control of error (to reduce variability from known sources). Participants will use two example data sets to illustrate the three principles and their application to two straightforward design scenarios, and enter and analyze the data in JMP, a software that can be acquired in Torgesen Bridge. This course is aimed for students with no design of experiments background and assumes that the audience is familiar with concepts such as hypothesis testing and p-value. 6. PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT FELLOWS PROGRAM – APPLY OCT 1-15
The PMF Program is a flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. The program attracts and selects the best candidates possible, but is designed with a more narrow focus – developing a cadre of potential government leaders. A unique aspect of the program is the STEM track, which gives applicants in a STEM career the opportunity to apply specifically to this program and be considered only for STEM jobs in agencies across government. 11. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR ONLINE SURVEY ABOUT ACADEMIC INTEGRITY – 1st posting
Graduate students are sought to complete an anonymous 20-minute online survey about academic integrity. Must be at least 18 years old to participate. This study examines the current state of graduate-student understanding about academic integrity. Results will be used to better understand how graduate students learn about academic integrity, how it affects them, and what measures are in place to preserve academic integrity at Virginia Tech. Results of this survey may be used for publication. Participation is voluntary and anonymous; results from this study will be used to enhance graduate education. 12. VOLUNTERS SOUGHT TO REVIEW UGRAD ESSAYS ON VT COMMON BOOK -2nd posting
Dr. Megan O’Neill, Assoc. Director of First Year Experiences, is seeking graduate student reviewers to help review common-book short essays written by undergraduates. Information about the common book program can be found at http://www.commonbook.vt.edu/. Time commitment ranges from a few to several hours depending on reading speed, between Oct 15-Nov 1. Delivery will be online, using a rubric to score 1-2-page essays. No commenting needed. 13. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR GOOGLE GLASS STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a study investigating the safety and health issues during order-picking using augmented reality technologies. Must be: 18-40 years old; no current or recent history (1 year) of physical disorder affecting shoulder, knee, lower back and ankle joints; no eyeglasses; exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times per week); must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. Participants will perform order-picking tasks (i.e., retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart and maneuvering a hand cart) using a paper pick-list and a Google glass. During data collection, participants will be asked to wear a wearable motion capture system. The weight of boxes will range 10-40 lbs. Compensation: 1-1.5 hour session, at $10/hour. SHORT STAT COURSE: SAS – MIXED MODELS

Taught by Dr. Michael Speed, this intro to mixed models uses SAS Enterprise Guide to analyze linear mixed models using PROC MIXED. Topics include analyzing data with random effects; learning how to determine what is being tested for the fixed effects; fitting random coefficient models; analyzing repeated measures data; and performing residual and influence diagnostic analysis. A case study will be presented to illustrate all of the concepts and procedures presented in the workshop. As part of the Global Academic Program at SAS, Michael Speed teaches classes for faculty and students and conducts research in linear models, generalized linear models, nonlinear mixed models, and data mining. Graduate students are sought for show & tell presentations during the fall GLC Open House on Friday, Oct 24. The purpose of these presentations is to showcase to other graduate students and the public the many ways in which graduate study and research can fun, exciting and intriguing. Demonstrations can be 10-30 minutes long, preferably highly visual and/or participatory, and should show something interesting to a general audience about your discipline, research, or materials/equipment you are working with. For examples, a chemistry student might demonstrate how to use liquid nitrogen to make ice cream; a mechanical engineering student may show how a Segway is used in research and allow the audience to test-drive one. The Division of Student Affairs HR office is looking for a graduate student for a wage position, 10-15 hrs/wk at about $10 per hour. The HR Training Assistant helps coordinate DSA HR training events, performs office administration duties including database entry, research, correspondence, listservs, reports and spreadsheets; electronic files and databases, and other duties. Participants are sought for a study investigating the safety and health issues during order-picking using augmented reality technologies. Must be: 18-40 years old; no current or recent history (1 year) of physical disorder affecting shoulder, knee, lower back and ankle joints; no eyeglasses; exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times per week); must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. Participants will perform order-picking tasks (i.e., retrieving boxes from shelves, loading/unloading boxes onto/from a hand cart and maneuvering a hand cart) using a paper pick-list and a Google glass. During data collection, participants will be asked to wear a wearable motion capture system. The weight of boxes will range 10-40 lbs. Compensation: 1-1.5 hour session, at $10/hour. It is difficult for international students to meet Americans with whom they can practice their English, but this is an opportunity to learn about each other’s countries and cultures. 19. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR SOCIAL MOOD AND RECALL STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a study examining responses to a mood task. Phase I involves questionnaires related to background, mood, and health. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to respond to an online questionnaire expected to last 30-45 minutes. Based on your responses to the measures, you may or may not be contacted for participation in the second portion of the study, which would be in a lab setting. This will involve you thinking about mood states and expressing these mood states to another same-gendered participant. During these tasks, heart rate measures will be recorded from electrodes placed on your skin. A same-gendered experimenter will provide a tutorial to show you how to place the electrode strap around your torso. You will also be asked to complete a series of questionnaires about your emotional experiences. In the event that you are eligible for the second part of the study, you will be contacted by email and will be entered into a raffle to win one of three $50 gift cards, and receive extra credit, when applicable. 4. "BRIDGES AND BOUNDARIES" WORKSHOP WITH PAKISTANI AND U.S. BANDS

In this workshop two bands, one Pakistani and one US, will share their stories and their passion to perform using traditional instruments to preserve and push the limits of the music they make. Khumariyaan, on tour as part of Center Stage, is keeping Pushtoon music alive, but they have had a challenging time finding acceptance and spaces to flourish. Local well-educated families often see this music as too low-brow and, because Pakistan has experienced a radical turn politically, the band, along with other musicians and craftspeople, have faced threats and violence. The Boston Boys do not face the same physical threats as Khumariyaan, but because their music crosses and blends many genres, defying easy classification, their music is less discoverable and harder to “place” in the vast digital landscape. The VT Language & Culture Institute offers a Science & Technical Writing course that is designed to help international students learn to write conference proposals, articles, and reports that are accepted for presentation & publication. 22. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR SOCIAL MOOD AND RECALL STUDY – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a study examining responses to a mood task. Phase I involves questionnaires related to background, mood, and health. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to respond to an online questionnaire expected to last 30-45 minutes. Based on your responses to the measures, you may or may not be contacted for participation in the second portion of the study, which would be in a lab setting. This will involve you thinking about mood states and expressing these mood states to another same-gendered participant. During these tasks, heart rate measures will be recorded from electrodes placed on your skin. A same-gendered experimenter will provide a tutorial to show you how to place the electrode strap around your torso. You will also be asked to complete a series of questionnaires about your emotional experiences. Are you a mother with a child in grades K-5 for the 2014-5 school year? Would you like to learn a new way to approach eating with your family? Do you drink three or more sugar-sweetened drinks each day? (i.e. Soda, sweet tea, sports drinks, specialty coffee, fruit punch/juice, etc.) This program will help you learn about slowing down for meals and reconnecting with food. You will learn strategies for enjoying food and sharing that joy with your family. Participation involves completing a few short questionnaires and providing a salivary sample during the introductory meeting and participating in four group educational sessions. Each of the first three group meetings should take 60 minutes and the fourth will be 90 minutes. Light refreshments will be provided. You will learn strategies for enjoying food and sharing that joy with your family. 4. SIGN UP NOW FOR PAYROLL DEDUCTION OF COMP FEES FOR GRAD ASSISTANTS
The registration system for paying comprehensive fees through payroll deduction is now open. Graduate students on an assistantship must either pay their comprehensive fees or enroll for payroll deductions before the payment deadline. To enroll in payroll deductions, login to Hokie SPA, choose University Account Information menu, and click on Graduate Students on Assistantship, enroll in Payroll Deduction. Students must first register for classes and their employing departments must enter the assistantship appointment on Banner-HR before students can enroll in payroll deduction. You must enroll in payroll deduction each semester in which you wish to take advantage of this opportunity.

2. SHORT STAT COURSE FOR GRADS: FACTORIAL EXPERIMENTS – BLOCKING, CONFOUNDING, AND FRACTIONAL FACTORIAL DESIGNS
Wednesday, Jul 30, 4:30-6:30pm, 1080 Torgersen Hall
Taught by Emanuel Msemo, this course will cover ways to handle situations when it is impossible to perform all of the runs of the factorial experiments under homogenous conditions. It will also cover the screening experiments in which many factors are considered and the objective is to identify those factors (if any) that have large effects. This short course is open to all, but the audience is assumed to be knowledgeable in ANOVA and basic principles of designing an experiment. A quick introduction to design of experiments will be given. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data.
