4. DOCUMENTARY FILM: SOMM

The Phi Beta Delta international honor society will show a documentary movie about four sommeliers who attempt to pass the Master Sommelier exam, a test with one of the lowest pass rates in the world. Following the screening there will be an international wine tasting at the Continental Divide. Both events are free but attendance is limited to 50 participants, so reservations are necessary. The StartUp Class is a semester-long course for teams of students who are interested in learning to become technology leaders and innovators through a structured curriculum that focuses on the development of a business model through customer discovery and assessment of product market fit. Teams will receive structured mentoring and have the opportunity to connect to professionals and fellow entrepreneurs.  This is not a lecture class; participants work on or form their own start up idea. This is a 3-credit elective for those who want to learn more about their own startup/business, open to any major and both grad and ugrad students. 12. RESEARCH SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR TRIP, FALL AND CATCH STUDY – 2nd posting
Graduate student researchers are conducting a study to investigate tripping during normal walking while carrying a tool, and the subsequent fall. The study will take approximately 2 hours and will involve walking while carrying a load and a randomly induced trip. Separately, participants will fall onto a padded mat while their movements are recorded with motion tracking cameras. Finally, subjects will fall a short distance onto a hard surface to study how people catch themselves. Preferred qualifications are 35-60 years old, BMI >25, and able to carry a 40lb tool in hands. Additional participants outside of the parameters will also be accepted as space allows. Exclusion criteria are any chronic wrist, elbow, or shoulder injuries or any injuries to the wrist, elbow, or shoulder in the past year. Participants will be compensated $10 per hour. 13. SURVEY ON RELATION BETWEEN TRAFFIC CONTROL TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIAL IMPACTS – 2nd posting
You are invited to complete a short survey about the relation between traffic control technology (e.g., traffic light) and social impacts (e.g., the effect on fulfilling your needs, the effect on fulfilling your rights, etc.). The information will be used for research purpose only, to help researchers determine social perspectives for designing control technology for self-driving vehicles. The survey should take you approximately 7 minutes and is available online. You are invited to participate in a study to investigate and explore how people talk with their partners about things that matter to them. Researchers will ask you and your partner to talk about something you disagree about, in one of several technological conditions. The study takes two hours to complete. The available time slots are every weekday, one session 3:00-5:00pm and another 5:30-7:30pm. 18. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR FOCUS GROUP ON EATING HABITS – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a focus group (Photovoice) to help researchers learn more about you and your family’s eating habits. Participants must attend one introduction meeting and three focus group discussions. You will take pictures of your weekly eating experiences using your cell phone camera or a camera that researchers could provide. Each focus group meeting should take between 60-90 minutes. Lunch will be provided. Participants will receive a total of $50 in a Target gift card for participating in and completing the study. Must be 18+, work part- or full-time, be a non-student, and have one child between the ages of 3-5. 19. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR MANUAL MATERIAL HANDLING STUDY – 3rd posting
The study is about physical demands associated with panelized wall handling. Participants will be asked to perform different types of manual material handling tasks (e.g., lift, lower, carry), during which measurements of body motions and muscle activities will be obtained. The study includes 1 preliminary and 1 data collection session. The data collection session will last about ~4 hours. The compensation will be $10 per hour and plus $10 after completion. 2. NOVEMBER SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: DR. RAFAEL DAVALOS

Learn about one of the top 7 NASA certified technological breakthroughs of ’07 from Dr. Rafael Davalos as he presents on the topic of irreversible electroporation (IRE) for the treatment of brain cancer. IRE therapy uses small (1-2mm) surgical probes to deliver low-energy microsecond pulses for approximately 1 minute. These pulses permanently destabilize the lipid bilayers of the targeted tissue (tumor) thereby killing the cells. Free food will be provided. Participants are sought for a focus group (Photovoice) to help researchers learn more about you and your family’s eating habits. Participants must attend one introduction meeting and three focus group discussions. You will take pictures of your weekly eating experiences using your cell phone camera or a camera that researchers could provide. Each focus group meeting should take between 60-90 minutes. The study is about physical demands associated with panelized wall handling. The C.A.P. Lab in the VT Psychology Department is conducting a new study focusing on 4-4.5 year-old children’s developing ability to control their actions during games like Simon Says. Participants are sought for a research study looking at the viability of safely and effectively teaching strength training with free weights using online methods. Participants will be asked to record themselves doing 2 assigned free-weight exercises, followed by an online module teaching the movements with practice, and again record themselves doing the movement. There are 2 surveys to collect demographic data and participants’ experiences with the instruction. Total time commitment is 4-5 hours and participants will be entered into a lottery to win prizes from VT Recsports. There is a slight risk of physical injury. However, participants will be briefed during the consent process and throughout the instruction on how to avoid injury. Must have access to gym equipment and a video recording device; must be 18 or older; have no medical conditions that could be made worse by physical exercise. Participants are needed for a survey on nighttime landscape preference among the VT community using eye-tracking goggles. The purpose of this study is to analyze people’s eye movements that will help designers and scholars develop design guidelines for various types of nightscapes. Participant will be looking around at different locations on campus at night wearing eye tracking goggles to visually rate landscape preferences, then respond to a few questions about their preferences and fears of nightscapes. 2. SHORT STAT COURSES BY LISA THIS FALL: NONPARAMETRIC METHODS FEATURING THE BOOTSTRAP
Tuesday, Nov 12

Nonparametric methods form an important core of statistical techniques and are typically used when data do not meet parametric assumptions. This short course, we will cover the basic philosophy of nonparametric statistics, what they’re all about, why we need them, and in what situations they are useful. Participants will discuss specific nonparametric tests, such as the rank-sum and signed-rank test (alternatives to t-test*), the Kruskal-Wallis test (alternative to ANOVA*), and the Spearman rank correlation (an alternative to the Pearson correlation) and review examples of how to implement these methods in R. The course will feature both lecture and computer laboratory elements. The Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) provides a series of evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. You are invited to participate in a study to investigate and explore how people talk with their partners about things that matter to them. Researchers will ask you and your partner to talk about something you disagree about, in one of several technological conditions. The study takes two hours to complete. The available time slots are every weekday, one session 3:00-5:00pm and another 5:30-7:30pm. Participants are sought for a focus group (Photovoice) to help researchers learn more about you and your family’s eating habits. Participants must attend one introduction meeting and three focus group discussions. You will take pictures of your weekly eating experiences using your cell phone camera or a camera that researchers could provide. Each focus group meeting should take between 60-90 minutes. The study is about physical demands associated with panelized wall handling. Participants will be asked to perform different types of manual material handling tasks (e.g., lift, lower, carry), during which measurements of body motions and muscle activities will be obtained. Participants are sought for a research study looking at the viability of safely and effectively teaching strength training with free weights using online methods. Participants will be asked to record themselves doing 2 assigned free-weight exercises, followed by an online module teaching the movements with practice, and again record themselves doing the movement. Participants are needed for a survey on nighttime landscape preference among the VT community using eye-tracking goggles. The purpose of this study is to analyze people’s eye movements that will help designers and scholars develop design guidelines for various types of nightscapes. The Graduate–Undergraduate Mentorship Program (GUMP) is seeking mentors from all fields. This program allows graduate students to mentor undergraduate students considering graduate school. JMP is a user-friendly statistical software package that puts advanced analytic capabilities within an easy-to-use graphical interface. In JMP a great number of sophisticated analyses are readily available without the need to write computer code, and this course provides guidance for new users of JMP. The course starts with basic data manipulation and moves to some advanced features, including importing data, interactive GUI, descriptive statistics such as numerical summary, inferential statistics such as t-tests, ANOVA, and regression. TECHNIQUES FOR SLEEPING BETTER

Everybody wants to sleep better, but very few people understand why they aren’t sleeping well or how to fix it. Stress is one of the main health problems reported by VT students and directly results in poor sleeping habits. This workshop focuses on recent research on sleep and its impact on health, and offers techniques that you can begin practicing immediately after the workshop. 18. MENTORING PROGRAM SEEKS MENTORS FROM ALL FIELDS – 1st posting
The Graduate–Undergraduate Mentorship Program (GUMP) is seeking mentors from all fields. This program allows graduate students to mentor undergraduate students considering graduate school. Undergrads and grads are matched according to their area of study, allowing the undergraduate to get a taste for graduate school and to ask questions of current graduate students. Each graduate mentor will be matched with 2–4 mentees, who will shadow them at times convenient for the graduate mentor during the spring semester. Mentoring can help build leadership skills and provide an experience to discuss with future employers. Mentors must attend one program orientation meeting the second week of the Spring semester, after which they will coordinate mentoring activities independently with their undergraduate mentees. 19. TANDEM LANGUAGE PROGRAM SEEKS PARTICIPANTS – 2nd posting
Native speakers of German are particularly encouraged to sign up for the “Tandem Program” at Virginia Tech, which matches international students with American language students.  There is currently a surplus of domestic learners of German looking for language partners; if your native language is German and you already speak perfect English, then please consider signing up to help an American learn your language! Participants are needed for a study assessing the effect of localized muscle fatigue on slip and fall risks. The study consists of 2 experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2-3 hours). Educational researchers estimate that, at best, we retain only about 10 percent of the information that we read. The key to becoming a more effective reader is to learn how academic information in published papers is structured and then to discipline one’s self to hunt for information actively rather than passively wait for the information to appear on the page. Exercise your imagination and creativity in a short design contest (charrette) based on a real-world project that’s coming to Blacksburg. The challenge includes generating conceptual design and naming ideas for a new grad housing complex. Teams of up to three may compete for $100 gift certificates to local restaurants. Background in architecture, landscape architecture or construction is helpful but not required; interdisciplinary teams are encouraged. Participants are needed for a study assessing the effect of localized muscle fatigue on slip and fall risks. The study consists of 2 experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2-3 hours). 27. CALLING SOCIAL SCIENCE AND HUMANITIES GRAD STUDENTS – 3rd  posting
The Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab is performing a study on walking, slipping and tripping.  The study involves one lab session, during which the subject will perform a series of walking trials while gait measurements are collected.  The participant may be slipped or tripped during the session, but all participants wear a harness to ensure safety.  The session takes approximately 1.5 hours, and each participant will receive $20 compensation.  Participants must be 18-30 or 60-80 years old.  Both healthy-weight and overweight subjects are needed.  If interested, please contact biomechanics.esm@gmail.com.

The Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab is performing a study on walking, slipping and tripping.  The study involves one lab session, during which the subject will perform a series of walking trials while gait measurements are collected.  The participant may be slipped or tripped during the session, but all participants wear a harness to ensure safety.  The session takes approximately 1.5 hours, and each participant will receive $20 compensation.  Participants must be 18-30 or 60-80 years old.  Both healthy-weight and overweight subjects are needed.  If interested, please contact biomechanics.esm@gmail.com.

13. BLACKSBURG SUPERHERO OBSTACLE CHALLENGE

The Blacksburg Superhero Obstacle Challenge is a 5k (3 miles) run similar to Tough Mudder or Spartan Race.  Enter yourself or join our graduate student team. Kids over 13 are allowed to compete with a parent’s signature, kids 10 and over can compete if there is a parent or guardian competing with them and we have a parent’s signature). It’s a great course, the weather looks great, and there is no water (maybe around your ankles) and little to no mud. There is lots of climbing, crawling, carrying, throwing and laughing. Participants in this study on functional and movement variability in laboratory and semi-naturalistic environments will perform walking trials on treadmill and floor with various daily activities, along with pillow carriage. Janet Kunz, International Tax Specialist, will review the types of income that a foreign national can earn, work restrictions, taxes required to be withheld (taken out) of payments, tax treaties, tax identification numbers, pay dates, documents required by Payroll and tax return reporting. This session may be most helpful for new international students who returning students who are working at VT for the first time and want to better understand their pay stub and tax options.

12. RAFTING/CANOEING/KAYAKING TRIP

If you are interested in rafting an epic river this fall, the Outdoor Club at VT (OCVT) has just the trip for you! OCVT will be doing the Gauley Marathon trip, which consists of rafting both the upper and lower sections of the river in one run of 23 miles. The Gauley River of WV is one of the top whitewater rivers in the world with many class 4 and 5 rapids. Gauley season is only for a few weeks of Sep and Oct each year. OCVT has worked out a great price. The Office of International Research, Education, and Development (OIRED) offers a Graduate Certificate in International Research and Development. Exercise your imagination and creativity in a short design contest (charrette) based on a real-world project that’s coming to Blacksburg. The challenge includes generating conceptual design and naming ideas for a new grad housing complex. Teams of up to three may compete for $100 gift certificates to local restaurants. Background in architecture, landscape architecture or construction is helpful but not required; interdisciplinary teams are encouraged. 21. PART-TIME ASSISTANTSHIP OPENING AT FRALIN LIFE SCI INSTITUTE – 2nd posting

23. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY WITH WALKING TRIALS – 2nd posting
Does the way you move and perform daily activities determine your proneness to falls? Participants in this study on functional and movement variability in laboratory and semi-naturalistic environments will perform walking trials on treadmill and floor with various daily activities, along with pillow carriage. There may be a random slip perturbation anytime while walking, but you will be fully secured in harness. Grad students are sought for a mentor program geared towards underrepresented students who are in their first and second year at VT. 25. PARTICIPANTS WITH SOCIAL ANXIETY OR AUSTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER SOUGHT FOR EYE GAZE STUDY – 3rd posting
VT researchers are seeking teenagers and adults ages 16-45 with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (such as Asperger’s) or Social Anxiety Disorder to participate in a study on the influence of social anxiety on gaze patterns. Involvement in the study will require one visit to the VT campus, after completing a brief telephone screen to determine eligibility. Total time commitment is 1.5-2.5 hours. If you are not a VT student who can receive Sona extra credit, you will be paid $20.00 for participating. Participants driving more than 30 miles to and from the study appointment will also receive mileage reimbursement ($0.50 per mile traveled, with a maximum mileage reimbursement of $50.00). Participants requesting mileage reimbursement will need to provide their home zip code in order to calculate the distance traveled.
