10. BGSO PRESENTS: OVERCOMING STRUGGLES AS A MINORITY IN YOUR FIELD

The Black Graduate Student Organization (BGSO) invites you to this presentation on "Overcoming struggles and biases as a minority to become successful in your field". Dr. Suzanne Weekes, Director of the Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics and associate department head and professor in mathematical sciences at Worchester Polytechnic Institute will lead this discussion and share lessons learned from her experiences.

13. PAYROLL DEDUCTION OF COMP FEES FOR GRADUATE ASSISTANTS – not too late to sign up!
It is not too late to enroll in payroll deduction of your comp fees if you are on a graduate assistantship! Graduate students on assistantship appointment may pay their comprehensive and capital fees through payroll deduction during the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible for this program, students must commit to paying the full-time comprehensive and capital fees through payroll deduction. Enrollment is managed through Hokie SPA and students must sign up _each_ semester in which they wish to take advantage of this opportunity. 19. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR "KIDS’ TECH UNIVERSITY" SPRING 2012
The VBI, Virginia 4-H, and other members of the VT community are asking for volunteers to assist with logistics of the spring 2012 Kids’ Tech University (KTU; http://kidstechuniversity.vbi.vt.edu),  a program for 450 kids ages 9-12 designed to spark an interest about science, technology, engineering, and math. Your help is needed on any one or all of the following days: Jan 28, Feb 25, Mar 24, and Apr 7, 2012, 9:00am to 4:00pm. All events are on Saturday and lunch is provided where appropriate. In the morning there is an interactive session followed by Q & A, a lunch break, then hands-on activities. 20. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR BIOMECHANICS STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are sought for a research study investigating the effects of asymmetric biomechanics and neuromuscular control of the human trunk.  The study involves several non-invasive and low-risk biomechanical tests and movements tasks. Experimental sessions will last about 2 hrs and participants will be compensated $15/hr. To qualify, must be between the ages of 18-70, have no current or recent (1 year) history of physical disorders affecting the lower back, moderately physically active (exercise 2-3 times/wk) and normal body weight (non-obese). Final eligibility will be determined based on age, height, and weight. Protocols have been approved by VT IRB (IRB #11-518). 21. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BIOMECHANICS STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are sought for a study investigating the effects of flexion on the biomechanics and neuromuscular behavior of the human torso. The study consists of six separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 1 hr) and participants will be compensated $10/hour. To qualify you must be 18-29 and regularly exercise at least 2-3 times/wk. For more information or to inquire about participation, please contact Neema at neema@vt.edu. Experienced teachers are offering Turkish language classes at Cranwell International Center through the Intercultural Understanding Club. You don’t need to know any Turkish to start Turkish classes: the Intercultural Understanding Club offers Turkish courses from beginner to advanced levels. 9. GRAD 5404: RESEARCH IN INT’L CONTEXTS
Research in International Contexts is a new 3-credit seminar course offered in Spring 2012 on Tuesdays, 4:00-6:50pm.  The seminar is intended to prepare graduate students for an international research experience and enable students to maximize the professional and personal benefits of that experience.  The seminar is required for the new Graduate Certificate in International Research Abroad. 10. SPRING SHORT COURSE: COMMUNICATING SCIENCE
This 1-cr participatory course will be taught by prof. Patricia Raun, and was inspired by her work with the Center for Communicating Science Institute at Stony Brook University (http://www.centerforcommunicatingscience.org/) and the belief that "scientists have a responsibility to share the meaning and implications of their work, and that an engaged public encourages sound public decision-making."  Participation in the course will lessen the discomfort of spontaneous interaction. Areas of emphasis will include imagination, relaxation, observation, and concentration through improvisation. The students will develop their communicative abilities through careful observation, active class contribution, and committed participation. 11. NEW SPRING COURSE: FROM MEMEX TO YOUTUBE: CONGNITION, LEARNING & THE INTERNET

So far education has used the Internet primarily as a delivery device, not a connectivity platform. If we change that paradigm, however, interesting questions emerge: How is Wikipedia not simply a reference work, but a learning environment and a community of practice? How does Google both model and shape human cognition? How can globally networked interactive computing augment human intellect and thus address the primary mission of education itself? This course explores the intersections of computing, information science, education, Internet studies, the humanities, and the visual and performing arts, as well as the crucial and long-contested relationships among making, doing, and knowing. Course readings will be supplemented by various  texts and artifacts, from podcasts to MMORPGs to machinima, and will include hands-on experience with blogging, tweeting, social bookmarking, and other more. 6. PAYROLL DEDUCTION OF COMP FEES FOR GRADUATE ASSISTANTS
It is not too late to enroll in payroll deduction of your comp fees if you are on a graduate assistantship! Graduate students on assistantship appointment may pay their comprehensive and capital fees through payroll deduction during the fall and spring semesters. 7. GRAD 5404: RESEARCH IN INT’L CONTEXTS
Research in International Contexts is a new 3-credit seminar course offered in Spring 2012 on Tuesdays, 4:00-6:50pm.  The seminar is intended to prepare graduate students for an international research experience and enable students to maximize the professional and personal benefits of that experience.  The seminar is required for the new Graduate Certificate in International Research Abroad. 8. SPRING SHORT COURSE: COMMUNICATING SCIENCE
This 1-cr participatory course will be taught by prof. Patricia Raun, and was inspired by her work with the Center for Communicating Science Institute at Stony Brook University (http://www.centerforcommunicatingscience.org/) and the belief that "scientists have a responsibility to share the meaning and implications of their work, and that an engaged public encourages sound public decision-making."  Participation in the course will lessen the discomfort of spontaneous interaction. Areas of emphasis will include imagination, relaxation, observation, and concentration through improvisation. The students will develop their communicative abilities through careful observation, active class contribution, and committed participation. 9. NEW SPRING COURSE: FROM MEMEX TO YOUTUBE: CONGNITION, LEARNING & THE INTERNET

So far education has used the Internet primarily as a delivery device, not a connectivity platform. If we change that paradigm, however, interesting questions emerge: How is Wikipedia not simply a reference work, but a learning environment and a community of practice? How does Google both model and shape human cognition? How can globally networked interactive computing augment human intellect and thus address the primary mission of education itself? This course explores the intersections of computing, information science, education, Internet studies, the humanities, and the visual and performing arts, as well as the crucial and long-contested relationships among making, doing, and knowing. Course readings will be supplemented by various  texts and artifacts, from podcasts to MMORPGs to machinima, and will include hands-on experience with blogging, tweeting, social bookmarking, and other more. Graduates should wear their own cap and gown. You may wear as many accoutrements as you wish for the portrait sitting. Chappell will mail your proofs to you approximately one week after the ceremony. The Office of International Research, Education, and Development (OIRED) offers a Graduate Certificate in International Research.  The program encourages a multidisciplinary approach for students already working towards a graduate degree to attain special recognition for their work on international issues.  Participants must take three 5000-level courses from an approved list, with one course being outside the applicant’s department and one outside the college.  Deadline to apply for students graduating in May 2012 will be January 23;  other applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. The editorial board members of Public Knowledge Journal announce that Volume 3 Issue 2 entitled “Academic Research” is now posted. The call for submissions for Volume 4 Issue 1 is now posted here. Please forward this call to any graduate students who might be interested. The next issue will focus broadly on the topic of public health. Submissions are encouraged from all disciplines in order to approach the topic from a variety of perspectives. Public Knowledge is a multidisciplinary, graduate-student-run electronic journal hosted by the Center for Digital Discourse and Culture at Virginia Tech (ISSN 1948-3511). The journal welcomes contributions of articles for peer review, as well as book reviews, essays, interviews, blogs, and other multimedia works. Authors also retain the rights to their work. Participants are needed for a study investigating the effects of job rotation on muscle fatigue and performance. The study consists of 6 separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2 hours) and one screening session. This 1-cr participatory course will be taught by prof. Patricia Raun, and was inspired by her work with the Center for Communicating Science Institute at Stony Brook University (http://www.centerforcommunicatingscience.org/) and the belief that "scientists have a responsibility to share the meaning and implications of their work, and that an engaged public encourages sound public decision-making."  Participation in the course will lessen the discomfort of spontaneous interaction. So far education has used the Internet primarily as a delivery device, not a connectivity platform. If we change that paradigm, however, interesting questions emerge: How is Wikipedia not simply a reference work, but a learning environment and a community of practice? How does Google both model and shape human cognition? How can globally networked interactive computing augment human intellect and thus address the primary mission of education itself? This course explores the intersections of computing, information science, education, Internet studies, the humanities, and the visual and performing arts, as well as the crucial and long-contested relationships among making, doing, and knowing. Course readings will be supplemented by various  texts and artifacts, from podcasts to MMORPGs to machinima, and will include hands-on experience with blogging, tweeting, social bookmarking, and other more. 10. SPRING SHORT COURSE: COMMUNICATING SCIENCE
This 1-cr participatory course will be taught by prof. Patricia Raun, and was inspired by her work with the Center for Communicating Science Institute at Stony Brook University (http://www.centerforcommunicatingscience.org/) and the belief that "scientists have a responsibility to share the meaning and implications of their work, and that an engaged public encourages sound public decision-making."  Participation in the course will lessen the discomfort of spontaneous interaction. Areas of emphasis will include imagination, relaxation, observation, and concentration through improvisation. 12. NEW SPRING COURSE: FROM MEMEX TO YOUTUBE: CONGNITION, LEARNING & THE INTERNET

So far education has used the Internet primarily as a delivery device, not a connectivity platform. If we change that paradigm, however, interesting questions emerge: How is Wikipedia not simply a reference work, but a learning environment and a community of practice? How does Google both model and shape human cognition? How can globally networked interactive computing augment human intellect and thus address the primary mission of education itself? This course explores the intersections of computing, information science, education, Internet studies, the humanities, and the visual and performing arts, as well as the crucial and long-contested relationships among making, doing, and knowing. Course readings will be supplemented by various  texts and artifacts, from podcasts to MMORPGs to machinima, and will include hands-on experience with blogging, tweeting, social bookmarking, and other more. 15. DISNEY PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FOCUS GROUP PARTICIPANTS NEEDED
Parents with children ages of 5-10 are invited to participate in two focus group sessions to help develop nutritious snack foods for kids. Every participating child must be accompanied by at least one parent/guardian. The focus group sessions will be held on Tuesday, Nov 15, 4:00pm and Tuesday, Jan 24, 4:00pm in classroom 132 in the Food Science and Technology Building, on the corner of Duck Pond Drive and Washington Street. The first session will last 90 min; the second session will last 60 min. All participants will receive a healthy snack. The information gleaned from participants will help with designing and developing a nutritious low-fat dairy and fruit product for kids. 17. GRAD STUDENT INPUT NEEDED ABOUT VT POLICY ON CONFLICT OF INTEREST
DRSCAP, a committee of the Commission on Graduate Studies and Policies, would like to meet with several graduate students who are funded by a faculty-owned company to hear their experiences. The committee has been asked to provide input on protections for graduate students as part of the revision of the university’s policy on conflict of interest. Hearing about experiences from a variety of perspectives would be helpful in thinking through proposed policy options. DRSCAP would be especially interested in talking to graduate students who:
– Are funded by a grant or contract where the source of funds was their advisor’s private company;
– Are paid directly by the faculty-owned company;
– Are working for a faculty member on his or her outside consulting.
