2. ONE-WOMAN SHOW: WONG FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST
Tuesday, Oct 11, 8:00pm, GLC Auditorium
Performance artist Kristina Wong examines a very serious topic (displacement and depression) through a comic lens. While Wong doesn’t know the answer to the questions she raises, she puts the onus on herself to figure it out through humor, wit, and heaps of unfinished knitting, all in 70 minutes. While the performance is based on the experiences of a particular group, Asian-American women, the issues raised are relevant to a much broader audience – practically anyone who has been displaced from their own culture into another can relate to the pains of trying to fit in, to not being understood by one’s own family and/or the new environment, to feeling like an alien, and more. 7. GRAD STUDENT PHOTO-ART-WRITING CONTEST: GRAD LIFE THROUGH THE EYES OF GRADS
The Graduate School invites submissions of art work, photography and written work by graduate students for display in the GLC for the Graduate School’s Open House on October 21 and beyond. All pieces will be displayed on October 21 and November 12; selected pieces will be displayed from October 21, 2011 through March 2012. The Graduate School is seeking bands and solo acts to provide entertainment on the GLC Plaza and in the Graduate Life Center (GLC) at the Oct 21 GLC open house. 9. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT DURING GLC OPEN HOUSE

10. GSA LOGO DESIGN CONTEST
The Graduate Student Assembly is seeking entries from students to re-design their logo. The logo will be used on GSA marketing materials including but not limited to those imprinted or in electronic form. You can win a $100 university bookstore sponsored gift card and build your resume! Phi Beta Delta recognizes the scholarly achievement of international students and scholars, U.S. students who have studied abroad, and faculty and staff who are involved in international activities. There are four categories of members:

13. FREE SUPPORT GROUP FOR EXPECTING COUPLES – 2nd posting
As many as 90% of couples experience a significant decline in relationship satisfaction after having their first child. The Mindful Transition to Parenthood Program can help couples prepare for this transition in a healthier way: participants will learn how to connect more deeply with their partner; practice effective communication and stress management; reduce pain during birth; ways to lower risk of postpartum depression. Participants will engage in research-based mindfulness practices and couples activities to enhance their relationships. 19. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR BIOMECHANICS STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are needed for a study investigating the effects of job rotation on muscle fatigue and performance. The study consists of 6 separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2 hours) and one screening session. Participants will be compensated $10/hour with a $10 bonus after completing all sessions. Requirements: male or female, age 18-25, low body fat, right handed, 20/20 vision (corrected okay), no recent history of musculoskeletal disorders, and exercise 2-3 times per week. R is a free computing and graphical software/environment for statistical analysis. This short course, taught by Sai Wang, consists of 3 sections: (1) introduction to R programming basics, such as data objects in R, loops, import/export datasets, along with examples of data manipulation/cleaning; (2) R graphing environment and how to create some basic statistical plots; (3) basic statistical analysis in R, such as t-tests, ANOVA and linear regression. *The Tuesday and Thursday courses are identical. The Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) provides a series of evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. 20. STATISTICAL COLLABORATION SERVICE THROUGH LISA
LISA (Virginia Tech’s Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) provides faculty, staff, and student researchers with quality statistical support for free. LISA’s statistical collaborators are trained to help design experiments, analyze and plot data, run statistical software, interpret results, and communicate statistical concepts to non-statisticians. For best results, request a collaboration meeting with LISA before you collect your data. If you are seeking advice on data analysis or report writing after collecting data, please bring to the meeting a clear idea of your overall research goals, specific research questions, cleaned data you may have already collected, and the results of any analyses already performed – including any plots or graphs. Visit the Virtual Graduate Life Center  (vGLC), which extends Virginia Tech’s graduate-education community from campus to computer. Participants are needed for a study investigating the effects of job rotation on muscle fatigue and performance. The study consists of 6 separate experimental sessions (each lasting approximately 2 hours) and one screening session. Participants will be compensated $10/hour with a $10 bonus after completing all sessions. Requirements: male or female, age 18-25, low body fat, right handed, 20/20 vision (corrected okay), no recent history of musculoskeletal disorders, and exercise 2-3 times per week. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management announced the application period for the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program Class of 2012. Apply now through Sep 25, 2011. This program helps federal agencies attract outstanding master’s and doctoral students who have a clear interest in excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs. Participating couples must be: (1) over 18 years old; (2) have been dating over 1 year or married w/o kids; (3) speak English as the main language with each other; (4) at least one member affiliated with Virginia Tech. This IRB-approved study examines the effects of remote touch and audio channel on communication particularly in instances where the couple has feelings about a topic and when they may disagree. OUTDOOR CLUB WHITEWATER RAFTING – SIGN UP NOW

The Outdoor Club at Virginia Tech (OCVT) is organizing a whitewater rafting trip to raft the entire Gauley, upper and lower; 23 miles of river, over a 100 rapids, in 1 day. Take part in one of the best whitewater rafting experiences in the world. Rafters have to be at base camp in WV at 6:00am and will finish rafting at 6:30 pm. 24. NEW GRAD ASSISTANTSHIP POSITION OPEN – 1st posting
VT University Relations is looking to fill a graduate assistantship position asap. The GA will provide desktop support for Windows-based and Mac systems for approximately 50 professionals in University Relations. The GA will also be responsible for handling support requests related to the 4 display units in the Burruss Hall foyer and 8 units in the Visitor and Undergraduate Admission Center. Responsibilities span three distinct buildings on the VT campus, requiring that the GA be flexible and capable of getting from one location to another. 27. RESEARCH STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED – 1st posting
Participants are sought for a study about loads on the knees while performing industrial tasks. Participants must be males or females between 18-30, and (1) should not have any current or recent history of ankle, knee and hip joint injury (2) should not experience pain or discomfort while squatting or kneeling on the floor (3) should exercise regularly (4) should have no abnormal health condition. Participants will perform simulated industrial tasks and will be expected to attend just one session lasting for about 2.5 hours. No compensation will be provided. 28. PAID PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY OF 2-WAY COMMUNICATION – 1st posting
Researchers are looking for couples to participate in a study about two-way telecommunication using remote touch and audio channels. Participating couples must be: (1) over 18 years old; (2) have been dating over 1 year or married w/o kids; (3) speak English as the main language with each other; (4) at least one member affiliated with Virginia Tech. This IRB-approved study examines the effects of remote touch and audio channel on communication particularly in instances where the couple has feelings about a topic and when they may disagree. Couple will be situated in two study rooms and asked to have three discussion sessions through audio or remote touch and audio channels. The whole experiment will take 2 hours. 29. RESEARCH SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR HNFE STUDY – 1st posting

Research subjects are wanted for a study to determine whether daily consumption of corn oil/omega-3 fat will influence muscle soreness, damage and inflammation that occurs after weight training. Must consume supplement for 45 days, perform strenuous weight training bout, go through several weeks of weight training program developed by the researchers, and provide seven blood samples over 45 days. Must be healthy males (non-smokers, no orthopedic limitations to exercise; no chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, bleeding, or inflammatory diseases); 18-28; schedule compatible with testing and training. VT researchers seek volunteers for a project on the “Benefits of immersion for analysis of micro-CT datasets,” to help gather quantitative and qualitative insights into immersion benefits while exploring a complex scientific dataset like that of microscopic computed tomography data. The study consists of carrying out few tasks (answering few questions) related to two selected micro-CT datasets, which will be volume visualized on a state-of-the-art  spatially immersive stereo display system, in the Visionarium at 3050 Torgersen. The experiment lasts for about 1.5 hrs. This study has been IRB approved.  The researchers need 17 more participants who are selected on a first come first served basis. Participants must be more than 18 years old with no or minimal background in micro-CT imaging to participate in this experiment. 12. PARKING PERMIT PAYROLL DEDUCTION NOW AVAILABLE FOR GRAD ASSISTANTS
Graduate assistants (GAs, GTAs and GRAs) are now able to purchase the parking permits using payroll deduction. This new program allows qualified students* to purchase permits with pre-tax dollars and spread the cost over the duration of their assistantship appointment (maximum 17 pay periods). The amount deducted from each payroll will be determined by the time frame of the appointment set in Banner by the hiring department. To purchase this permit, students must go in person to the main Parking Services Office at 455 Tech Center Drive.  This option is not available online. *The hiring department must enter the position into Banner prior to being able to enroll in the pre-tax permit deduction program.  *This program is only available to graduate assistants whose appointment begins in the fall semester. It is not too late to enroll in payroll deduction of your comp fees if you are on a graduate assistantship! To be eligible for this program, students must commit to paying the full-time comprehensive and capital fees through payroll deduction. Aetna Student Health is the new health insurance carrier for the 2011-2012 academic year. Learn about the available plans, what they cover, and how you can enroll. Graduate students (GA’s, GTA’s and GRA’s) eligible for the health insurance subsidy should choose a “subsidy plan” and should show a $0 balance when completing the enrollment process.

8. DRAGON’S TOOTH HIKE AND HOMEPLACE VISIT WITH OCVT
Sunday, Aug 21, 2:00pm, meet in Squires Parking Lot (next to GLC)
The Outdoors Club of VT (OCVT) will lead a small group up the nearby Dragon’s Tooth peak on the Appalachian Trail, about a 40 min drive from campus. Following this 5mi (9km) round-trip hike, the group will head to the Homeplace Restaurant for some all-you-can-eat Southern style buffet dinner. This hike is one of the most-traveled in the area and is accessible to anyone who can walk 5 miles and climb up two ladder rungs. The restaurant is also a “must-see” for any Tech student with Southern cuisine: fried chicken, ham, roast beef, apple-butter biscuits, mashed potatoes, etc (not vegetarian friendly). Join the group to meet some fellow grads and find out about other hikes, camping trips, and events planned for the coming year by the Outdoors Club. The group will carpool as much as possible, so let Ben Freedman know if you can drive or if you have questions or want to participate. Wear sturdy tennis shoes, light hikers, or good walking shoes and carry  1-2 l of water (required) and a light lunch to keep you energized on the hike up; $15 for the Homeplace, and $1-2 for the drivers to help with gas.

9. PARKING PERMIT PAYROLL DEDUCTION NOW AVAILABLE FOR GRAD ASSISTANTS
Graduate assistants (GAs, GTAs and GRAs) are now able to purchase the parking permits using payroll deduction. This new program allows qualified students* to purchase permits with pre-tax dollars and spread the cost over the duration of their assistantship appointment (maximum 17 pay periods). The amount deducted from each payroll will be determined by the time frame of the appointment set in Banner by the hiring department. To purchase this permit, students must go in person to the main Parking Services Office at 455 Tech Center Drive.  This option is not available online. *The hiring department must enter the position into Banner prior to being able to enroll in the pre-tax permit deduction program.  *This program is only available to graduate assistants whose appointment begins in the fall semester. 10. PAYROLL DEDUCTION OF COMP FEES FOR GRADUATE ASSISTANTS
It is not too late to enroll in payroll deduction of your comp fees if you are on a graduate assistantship! 11. VERIFY YOUR IN-STATE CLASSIFICATION STATUS NOW!
Please review your student status in HokieSPA and your e-bill from the Bursar to make sure that you in-state or out-of-state status appears properly. If you believe that you are eligible for in-state classification but are not listed as an in-state student, please review our website about eligibility requirements, and submit an application for in-state residency.

14. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR RESEARCH PROJECT – 1st posting

VT researchers seek volunteers for a project on the “Benefits of immersion for analysis of micro-CT datasets,” to help gather quantitative and qualitative insights into immersion benefits while exploring a complex scientific dataset like that of microscopic computed tomography data. The study consists of carrying out few tasks (answering few questions) related to two selected micro-CT datasets, which will be volume visualized on a state-of-the-art  spatially immersive stereo display system, in the Visionarium at 3050 Torgersen. The experiment lasts for about 1.5 hrs. This study has been IRB approved.  The researchers need 17 more participants who are selected on a first come first served basis. Participants must be more than 18 years old with no or minimal background in micro-CT imaging to participate in this experiment. The available time slots for participation are available here. 15. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY OF SITTING EFFECTS – 1st posting
You are invited to participate in a study aimed at testing muscle activities in a seated posture. Participants must be in no current or recent history (1 year) of physical disorders affecting the shoulder, knee, or lower back; exercise on a regular basis (2-3 times/wk); and be between ages 18-64. Participants will be required to perform several computer-based typing tasks in a laboratory setting. Each experiment session will last 2 to 3 hours and participants will be compensated $10/hour. The Graduate School is still looking for graduate student volunteers (graduate ambassadors) to assist with international graduate student check-in (Aug 8-19), GTA training (Aug 15-16), the Welcome Center and New Graduate Student Orientation in the GLC (Aug 15-19). Roles include: check in and registration assistance, information and guidance to attendees; Welcome Center staffing; orientation crowd control; program set up and more.
