Personal financial planning is not a topic that most young professionals understand well.  It includes understanding how to conduct personal financial planning in order to assure security and financial well-being in your later years. The MBA program offers a personal finance workshop to all graduate students, presented by MBA alumnus Derek Klock, a faculty member in  Pamplin’s Finance Department. 

4. GRADS SOUGHT FOR FOCUS GROUP FOR “FOOD SECURITY” COURSE DEVELOPMENT – sign up now

The Appalachian Foodshed Project (AFP) is working with communities, farmers, policymakers, non-profits, and institutions to better understand community food security in Appalachia.  Faculty involved with the AFP are planning a graduate-level Community Food Security Course to be offered to any graduate student interested in this topic from both a practitioner and scholarly perspectives.  To ensure this course meets student needs, your input is needed! For example:  What do you know about food security?  What do you want to know? What information do you need for a future career? There will be two focus groups for graduate students to discuss how the upcoming course should be designed. Your participation will help with the design of course content, course activities and assessment techniques. Participants in the 90-min focus group will be provided with dinner prior to the meeting. 11. INTERNATIONAL STREET FAIR

International Street Fair is organized by the Council of International Student Organizations (CISO) and Cranwell International Center and is held in downtown Blacksburg where College Avenue is transformed into a multicultural marketplace where vendors sell international foods, handicrafts, and more. The fair also features live performances of traditional music and dance from around the world. 12. GSA ELECTIONS FOR EXEC BOARD MEMBERS
The Graduate Student Assembly will hold elections for its executive board officers at the April delegate meeting. If you are interested in being involved with the governance process at Virginia Tech or helping to work with the GSA to plan events, now is the time to step up. Elections will be for the President, Vice-President of Membership, Vice-President of Programs, Treasurer, and Secretary. The duties and responsibilities for these positions can be found in the GSA Bylaws at http://www.gsa.graduateschool.vt.edu/about/bylaws. If interested in running for any of these positions, send a one-page letter of interest to Jenn Gooding, jgooding@vt.edu, by Apr 22, 5:00pm. 13. HONOR SYSTEM SEARCH FOR CHIEF JUSTICE NOW OPEN – 1st posting
The Graduate Honor System is searching for a new chief justice due to the impending graduation of the current chief justice, Jordan Booker. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • must be a graduate student in good standing who has been in residence for a minimum of one semester
  • be able to serve as Chief Justice for at least one year while enrolled full-time in the Blacksburg campus.
  • Preferably applicants should have experience as a GHS investigator or panelist. Apply by May 16 by submitting a statement of intent, a resume, and one letter of reference to gibsonm@vt.edu. The new Chief Justice will be selected by a committee and ratified by the Graduate Student Assembly and the Commission on Graduate Studies and Policies before final appointment by the president. 16. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE FOR PHI BETA DELTA INTL HONOR SOCIETY – 3rd posting
The annual spring membership drive for VT’s Gamma Omega chapter of Phi Beta Delta, the first honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education, is open. The society’s goals are to recognize the scholarly achievement of international students and scholars, U.S. students who have studied abroad, and faculty and staff who are involved in international activities, to advance the development of academic-based international programming, to provide a network on each campus for faculty, staff, and international students involved in international endeavors, and to extend the network of members in chapters worldwide. 19. GA OPPORTUNITY FOR 2014-15 – 3rd posting
The Student Success Center is hiring a full-time (20 hrs/wk) Graduate Assistant for the 2014-15 academic year, reporting to the Assistant Director in The Student Success Center (SSC). The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the development, implementation and assessment of The Student Success Center Tutoring Program, provide group and individual tutoring to undergrads enrolled in math courses at VT, focusing on courses offered through the Virginia Tech Math Emporium including Math 1015, 1016, 1525, and 1526. This position requires a high level of initiative and strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership, and presentation skills. 21. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR LOAD CARRIAGE STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a VT study investigating different load carriage methods on flat and inclined surfaces, and how these methods influence injury risk. The study (IRB # 14-347) consists of one session for about 3 hours. Requirements: male or female, 18-60 years of age, with no recent history of balance disorders, concussions, musculoskeletal injury in the past affecting normal walking or turning. 22. SURVEY PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON LIFE SCIENCE COMMUNITIES – 2nd posting
Researchers are working to define how best to support community knowledge sharing in life science online resources; from sharing data within a small group of colleagues to sharing expertise and opinions across broader biological science communities. Preferred participants are familiar with web applications for biological scientists (e.g., NCBI, PubMed) and/or bioinformatics tools. 25. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR LUMBAR SPINE STUDY    2nd posting
The VT Industrial Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory will conduct a study examining the mechanics of the lumbar spine in healthy adults. Participants will work with a research assistant to twist and bend the subject’s torso within the limits of daily living. The study requires a single experimental session that lasts for 2-3 hours.  Participating subjects will be compensated $10/hr for their time. Subjects 25 years and older are preferred, but subjects over 18 will be considered. Subjects must not suffer from any systemic inflammatory condition or any other series medical condition, or have a history of a spinal disorder, spinal fracture, or spinal surgery. 26. USER-STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 3rd posting
Researchers will be studying how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system during one max. 2-hr session, including what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and times are flexible to adhere to your busy schedule. If selected for the study, you will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art, and you will be trained on how to use the system. For the experimental session, you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do during the training and experimental session. Afterwards, you will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Participants must be 18-64 years old, free of health detriments that could impede, delay or harm them in performing hand movements and completing questionnaires. 27. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION FOR 10 MINUTE SURVEY ON EMAIL USE – 3rd posting
Participants are sought for a research study to investigate email practices, with the goal of gaining insight into the habits and practices of daily email users. The study consists of a 10-15 minute online questionnaire that asks about the reasons that you use email. 28. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR MENTAL WORKLOAD STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are needed for a study to investigate how mental and postural demands affect our overall mental workload.  Participants will be asked to do some simple mental tasks while researchers measure your postural stability and brain activity using EEG.  Must be right-handed between the ages of 18-30 with no history of low back pain to participate. Researchers are developing a new system for automatic recognition of facial expressions using the Kinect. Participants will be asked to watch a computer monitor and make some different emotional expressions. Participation time: about 45 mins; must be 10-30 years old to participate.
