Grab healthy snacks and other refreshments, participate in fun activities, and play with the Cook Counseling Center’s therapy dogs for a few minutes to get away from end-of-semester stress. This event is organized by Alpha Kappa Delta Phi Sorority, Inc., the Association of Black Psychologists in collaboration with the Cook Counseling Center, Schiffert Health Center, Health Education, Recreational Sports, HNFE, the Women’s Center, and the Student Success Center. 7. HONOR SYSTEM SEARCH FOR CHIEF JUSTICE NOW OPEN – 3rd posting
The Graduate Honor System is searching for a new chief justice due to the impending graduation of the current chief justice, Jordan Booker. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- must be a graduate student in good standing who has been in residence for a minimum of one semester
- be able to serve as Chief Justice for at least one year while enrolled full-time in the Blacksburg campus.
Preferably applicants should have experience as a GHS investigator or panelist. Apply by May 16 by submitting a statement of intent, a resume, and one letter of reference to gibsonm@vt.edu. The new Chief Justice will be selected by a committee and ratified by the Graduate Student Assembly and the Commission on Graduate Studies and Policies before final appointment by the president. 8. ASSISTANT EDITOR WAGE POSITION STARTING FALL 2014– 1st posting
Assistant Editor, Review of Middle East Studies (RoMES)—starts August 2014. RoMES is published by the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) and based in the VT Department of Religion and Culture. It publishes book reviews, current reports, and peer-reviewed essays on the state of the art of the field for an international, interdisciplinary audience. The Assistant Editor will use MS Access database and Open Journal Systems to manage and edit book reviews, correspond with associate editors, authors, publishing companies, the editor and editorial assistant, and attend to other administrative duties. Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential; commitment is 10-12 hours per week. The Assistant Editor will begin training with the outgoing Assistant Editor in August. The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the Operations Manager for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to the patrons who use the GLC. This includes providing excellent customer service, overall building management, reserving rooms, oversight of the welcome center, basic cleaning (wiping tables, vacuuming, etc.) and administrative support. The Student Building Manager has primary responsibility, including emergency response, for the building during evening and weekend hours. 13. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR USER STUDY OF ONLINE RESOURCE IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES COMMUNITIES – 1st posting
Participate in a 2-hour IRB-approved study to evaluate bioinformatics website. The study will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud. Preferred participants are undergraduate and graduate students from the Biological Sciences programs. Participants will verbalize their thinking about the website (positive and negative aspects about the website). At the end of the eye-tracking session, participants will fill out one online survey. 14. USER STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 1st posting
18-64 year-old participants in good health and with at least a month’s experience in 3D modeling or art like clay, sculpture, fabric or other tangible mediums are sought to participate in a study on how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system. For one max. 2-hour session, researchers will study how you use their system, what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and the times are very flexible to meet your schedule. If selected to participate, you will be asked to read a written consent form, and will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art. The moderator will train you on how to use the system, and then you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do. You will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Audio will be recorded during the interview. Research subjects are needed for a study investigating balance and gait in the Kevin P. Granata Lab in Norris Hall. The study will take about 1-1.5 hours to complete, and subjects will be paid $20. 16. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR DIET AND MUSCLE METABOLISM STUDY – 2nd posting
Volunteers are needed for a study examining how diet influences muscle metabolism. Must be: non-smoking males between ages 18-40; not currently taking any medications; without any major medical problems; willing to eat a high fat diet for 5 days. 17. FOCUS GROUP PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON MARRIED ADULTS – 2nd posting
Participants are sought for a focus group concerning married adults’ perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes about seeking treatment from a marriage and family therapist for them and their partner. If you are married and at least 18, you are invited to participate in one of two focus groups. Participation is confidential. Schedule: (1) Saturday 5/3/2014 1:00-2:30pm; (2) Saturday 5/10/2014 1:00-2:30pm, held at the Family Therapy Center of Virginia Tech. 19. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR LOAD CARRIAGE STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are needed for a VT study investigating different load carriage methods on flat and inclined surfaces, and how these methods influence injury risk. The study (IRB # 14-347) consists of one session for about 3 hours. Requirements: male or female, 18-60 years of age, with no recent history of balance disorders, concussions, musculoskeletal injury in the past affecting normal walking or turning.
