Weekly services are on hiatus in the summer, except for the café. However, career advising, counseling, and writing support are available at each service’s home location in the Career Services Center, Cook Counseling and Newman Library respectively.

2. SHORT STAT COURSE FOR GRADS: SQL IN R
Wednesday, Jul 16, 4:30-6:30pm, 1080 Torgersen Hall;
Structured Query Language (SQL) is the prevailing language to communicate with datasets today. Many popular statistical packages have integrated SQL as a built-in part or add-on package. Taught by Xinran Hu, this short course will cover basic SQL concepts, querying commands from a single dataset (select, where), aggregate function (group by, having, sum, avg, max, min), and querying commands from multiple dataset (join). Attendees can practice these commands with an online SQL learning source, sqlzoo.net. This short course is an introduction for researchers who want to learn the basic SQL commands. Prior experience with SQL or programming is NOT required. Experience with R is preferred but NOT required. 5. VT ENGAGE-AMERICORPS PROGRAM SEEKING GRAD STUDENTS FOR PT POSITIONS – 1st posting
VT Engage is hiring 21 part- and full-time members to serve in their new AmeriCorps program with the American Red Cross in Roanoke and Smart Beginnings NRV in the areas of disaster preparedness/response and early childhood literacy. This is a great opportunity for students, alumni, and community members to gain invaluable experience, learn more about their community, and fulfill Virginia Tech’s motto of Ut Prosim. New members will be selected by August 4. Starting this September, each member will serve for approximately one year to build awareness and capacity in our communities. All of these positions come with a stipend and educational award. There are several 300 and 675 hour positions available that would fit well with a current student’s schedule. 6. AUXILIARY GA POSITION IN VT BUDGET & FINANCIAL PLANNING – 2nd posting
The VT Office of Budget and Financial Planning has a 20 hrs/wk Graduate Assistantship opening for the 2014-15 academic year, with stipend, tuition scholarship, and health insurance. The ideal candidate will have an interest/focus in public budgeting/finance with excellent technology skills, particularly with Excel. The position will assist the office in the budget development, monitoring, and reporting processes for the University’s Auxiliary Enterprises area (Athletics, Rec. Sports, Dorms, Dining, etc.). There will also be participation in broader office responsibilities and ad-hoc projects. Successful candidates should have good oral and written communication skills; the ability to perform work of varied difficulty requiring advanced data collection, analysis and forecasting; and experience in compiling and writing reports. 7. DIVERSITY SENIOR FELLOW POSITION OPEN FOR 2014-15 – 3rd posting
The Residential Colleges at Ambler Johnston (http://www.rescollege.housing.vt.edu/llc/waj/ and http://www.rescollege.housing.vt.edu/llc/hrc/) seek a graduate student to serve as a Diversity Senior Fellow. Successful candidate will academically mentor undergraduates living in the buildings and design modest programming around own research interests. Student will receive his/her own office, small programming budget, staff support, and some meals. Preference for PhD student with diversity/inclusion training. One-year appointment. 8. WAGE POSITION OPEN – 3rd posting
Wage Position: OJS (Open Access Systems) consultant with advanced familiarity with Open Journal Systems (OJS), a journal management and publishing system software, needed to help the editor of Review of Middle East Studies, a campus-based journal, transition to digital publishing. Flat fee for one week to ten days working with the editors in July or early August to apply the features of OJS software to the workflow of the journal.
