2. GLC CAFÉ: SUMMER EDITION

The weekly GLC café is offered every Thursday when VT is open. Summer café may be on the West Patio when the weather is nice, complete with a game of cornhole or giant Jenga. Enjoy free coffee, tea and cookies and the occasional fresh lemonade or other surprises in the company of your grad student friends and colleagues. Relax, network, meet new people, join a game of corn hole.

4. GRANT APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED IN CTR FOR PEACE STUDIES AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION – 1st posting
The CPSVP will provide support for graduate students whose thesis or dissertation research applies to issues of violence, with funded activities leading to the completion of a thesis or dissertation. Recipients are required to participate in various university-sponsored research conferences and professional conferences appropriate for their field of study. Proposals must address thematic research areas related to the study and prevention of violence, with special interest in the research of the causes, consequences, treatment, management, and/or prevention of violence. Research can focus on issues of violence at the individual, family, organizational, community, institutional, or societal level. Three awards available ranging $1,000-$1,500. Proposals are welcome from students in all VT departments, centers, and programs. Funded students must be full-time graduate students in good standing, and the research/scholarship is expected to be grounded in the social sciences, humanities, or arts. 6. SCIENCE MUSEUM SEEKS GRAD STUDENT PRESENTERS – 2nd posting
The Science Museum of Western Virginia (SMWV) in downtown Roanoke is looking for presenters for summer camps focused on STEM experiences to help open campers’ eyes to the wide number of fields and expertise contained under the STEM umbrella. Ideally, speakers should cover a 45-60-minute long session talking about their work and lead the campers in a hands-on activity related to their field. 8. GRADUATE SCHOOL SUMMER HOURS – 3rd posting
Starting Monday, May 16, the Graduate School’s offices in the GLC will operate with summer hours, 9:00am-4:00pm daily. The summer schedule will be in effect through Friday, Jul 29. When the Graduate School is open but the GLC is closed, visitors may access Graduate School offices through the entrance door facing Squires Student Center. Immigration walk-in advising hours in the summer are MWF 1:00-4:00pm, TTh 9:00am-12:00pm. The Graduate Life Center remains accessible 24/7 to all graduate students with a valid Hokie Passport. A secure drop box is available for form submissions immediately outside GLC 120.
9. FULL-TIME GA POSITION IN GRAD SCHOOL FOR 2016-17 – 1st posting
The Graduate School Student Services office is looking for a full-time graduate assistant (GA) to provide administrative and program-specific support for student services in the GLC. Duties include planning and executing orientation and educational programs, coordinating activities, managing communication, creating promotional materials, and assisting with other administrative duties as assigned. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to work independently as well as in a team are a must. Experience with program planning and execution and familiarity with GLC and VT services is preferred. Position to start on Aug 1. 10. GTA OPENINGS IN ENGLISH DEPARTMENT – 1st posting
The Department of English is seeking applications for GTAs for 2016-17 to teach in the First-Year Writing Program. Applicants must have completed at least 18 hours of graduate work in English or a related discipline to qualify. Appointed students must enroll in 12 hrs of graduate credit per semester, 3 of which should be practicum credits; must also participate in English department’s GTA mentoring program, which includes required activities before the semester begins. Appointed students may be required to take ENGL 5004, Composition Theory and Practice, during fall semester 2016. 16. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR EYE-TRACKER AND EEG FOR VISUALIZATION STUDY – 3rd posting
The VT Data Science and Visualization Lab is recruiting participants for a research study involving the use of eye-trackers, brain activity/EEG sensor and mouse movement and events to evaluate visualization tools. Participants will be asked to perform predefined tasks while recording their eye gaze, cortical activity and mouse movements and events with commercial eye trackers, brain sensor and log printing system respectively. The study will occur between May 10-20, 2016 and will take about two hours of participants’ time, compensated at $15/hr. There is minimal risk involved with this study besides mild discomfort from wearing the brain sensor/EEG headset. Must be more than18 years old to participate.
