7. GRADUATE STUDENT TOWN HALL MTG

Join the GSA, Graduate BOV representative, and Dean Karen DePauw as they host the first Graduate Student Town Hall. This event is an opportunity for graduate students to discuss topics pertinent to graduate life at Virginia Tech, as well as issues surrounding higher education as a whole. Information gathered from this event will assist the GSA and BOV representative in supporting graduate students at committees and commissions throughout Virginia Tech. 8. KIDS’ NIGHT OUT – FREE WEEKLY DROP IN CHILD CARE

12. CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR WOMEN AND MINORITY ARTISTS & SCHOLARS LECTURE SERIES – 1st posting
The Arts@VirginiaTech and the Office of the Provost has issued the annual call for proposals for the Women and Minority Artist and Scholars Lecture Series (WMASLS) for 2016-2017. The deadline for applications is Sept. 23, 2016. The fund provides up to $750 to supplement departmental or college funds in support of guest speakers or performances. Invited speakers may be from any discipline, gender, race, or ethnicity and their presentation must advance the goals of the WMASLS. 13. GRAD STUDENT MENTORS SOUGHT FOR VT-VCCS B2B PROGRAM – 1st posting
Applications are accepted for VT graduate student mentors to VT-Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program (B2B program) to work with Virginia community colleges to increase the number of transfer students pursuing degrees and research career paths in biomedical and behavioral sciences and provide research experiences, skills development, activities and support. Mentors are paired with 1-2 undergraduates and will be expected to attend training, communicate with the students for min. 1 hr/m, attend 1 meeting/m (dates tentatively set for 9/16, 10/21 and 11/11, 4:30-8 pm on VT campus) and possible social events. 14. APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR BOREN FELLOWSHIP – 1st posting
Applications for Boren Fellowships are now open through Jan 31, 2017. This program provides up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests. 15. HOW OF HAPPINESS – 1st posting
This free program offered by Rec Sports Wellness meets once a week for 10 weeks to talk  other about different strategies to help make your life the life you want to live. The program is based on the book “The How of Happiness” by Sonja Lyubomirsky, provided to everyone in the group. The focus of the group is to learn strategies mentioned in the book, have open conversations together, and be in a place where you can talk about anything on your mind on a weekly basis to improve your well-being, even if you already consider yourself a happy person. 21. ONLINE COURSE FOR NEW GRAD STUDENTS – 3rd posting
All new graduate students need to complete Haven Plus, an online course on the important issues of sexual harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. This course is part of the university’s comprehensive gender-based violence prevention program and meets the requirements of the federal Campus SaVE Act. Women Influencing the Arts speaker series provides a safe space for women artists and arts leaders to discuss and share challenges and triumphs faced by women in the field with young women studying the arts and/or those interested in pursuing a career in the arts. A few spots remain for graduate students to participate in the student column, Reflections and Explorations (RE), offered through the VT Institute for Policy and Governance. Past articles have focused on a broad array of issues linked to sustainability, the arts, democratic policy, and governance. Reflections and Explorations is a great vehicle to share your research ideas and theories with a broader audience. Submissions from across disciplines and critical reflections and explorations of current events, ideologies, acts of resistance and oppression, and beyond are encouraged and valued. The RE column appears weekly and everyone who signs up is responsible for writing one article on the topic of your choosing in about 1,000 words during the fall semester. The first article will appear on Thursday, Sep 1 and the last will be published on Thursday, Dec 8. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. 27. MALE MILITARY VETERANS SOUGHT FOR INTERVIEW ABOUT TECHNOLOGY TO ASSIST WITH COMMUNITY INTEGRATION – 1st posting
Male military veterans aged 18-35 are recruited for a 2-hour interview to discuss requirements for a technology for veterans to use to help them integrate into their community.
