7. LIBRARY STUDIOS WORKSHOP SERIES: INTRODUCTION TO TABLEAU DESKTOP

8. A HELPING HAND FOR HAND-IN-HAND
Saturday, Oct 27, 1:00-3:00pm, Blacksburg Municipal Park
The graduate leadership class in the Building Construction department is hosting a field day event to bring the community together and encourage kids to unplug from the screen by providing a platform for healthy physical activity and interaction. They are also beautifying Hand-in-Hand playground to bring awareness to planned playground renovations. Event includes face-painting and carnival games such as ring toss, egg toss, and knock down bowling. Field day activities include musical chairs, relay and potato sack races. Members of VT athletic teams will be present to kick soccer balls and throw footballs with those in attendance. Entry to the event is free, however attendees are strongly encouraged to donate canned food. 9. 3rd ANNUAL VT NUTSHELL GAMES

Where can you learn about 30 research projects in 45 minutes? Hosted by Virginia Tech’s Center for Communicating Science and held in conjunction with the Virginia Tech Science Festival, the Nutshell Games will take place at the conclusion of the day-long Science Festival. Thirty graduate students will each have 90 seconds to present their research to the audience at this friendly science communication competition. Come cheer for your friends and colleagues.

13. CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION OPEN – 1st posting
US citizen graduate students are welcome to apply to the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, a fully-funded intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of fifteen critical languages during summer 2019. Applications are due Tuesday, November 27, 2018 by 8:00pm. 15. SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL ONE HEALTH DAY COMPETITION – 2nd posting
SAVMA & the Virginia Tech One Health Working Group are excited to present the second annual International One Health Day Competition in honor of International One Health Day. Competition will take place at the VMCVM on Saturday, Oct 27, from 9:00am-2:00 pm. Participants from all graduate programs (DVM, DO, MPH, PhD, and all master’s programs) are invited to compete. Teams of four students, with at least three different programs represented, will develop plans to solve several different outbreak scenarios. Partial teams and individuals who sign up will be placed on teams by event organizers. Scenarios may encompass all aspects of one health, from zoonotic diseases, to emerging infectious pathogens, to natural disasters, to triage medicine in the face of an emergency. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team, and breakfast (Panera) and lunch (Qdoba) will be provided. 16. PROPOSALS FOR JMU LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, $250 TRAVEL AWARD – 3rd posting
The School of Strategic Leadership Studies (SSLS) of James Madison University seeks proposals from a diverse range of graduate level leadership scholars and researchers for the Leading Change:  Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Leadership Studies Conference. Proposals can originate from any discipline but must have a leadership emphasis. Conference tracks will focus on leadership in a variety of organizational environments including psychology, business, higher education, nonprofit, community, etc. Conference takes place Thursday & Friday, Feb 21-22, 2019 in Harrisonburg, VA.  Proposals can be submitted online and close Nov 1.  $250 awards to cover expenses will be available to individual VT graduate students that apply. SECL building managers oversee daily operations of the GLC by monitoring service, safety, and security of this space created for graduate students. Duties include walking rounds, responding to issues, and completing reports, in addition to the facilitation of the co-curricular and administrative programs of the student center services and their events. Directly responsible for event management bookings, opening & closing of the building, and submitting of facility work orders and daily reports. 20. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: STUDY ON SCHOOL READINESS IN PRESCHOOLERS – 1st posting
The iLEAP Lab in the Psychology Dept. is conducting a new study focusing on school readiness in preschoolers, and the predictability of different cognitive development factors in monolinguals and bilingually exposed children. The study will comprise of two visits, 1 year apart. During this visit, a variety of tasks will be administered in play-like interactions, lasting about an hour and 15 minutes. Data will be collected again one year later. Looking for preschool children (about 3 years old) who speak English only, but especially for those who speak and hear a different language at home. Offers a $15 compensation at each session for filling out the demographic and language questionnaires. 21. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: STUDY WITH VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) TECHNOLOGIES – 1st posting
A team is investigating the best ways to interact with Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, and this study compares various methods of interaction with virtual data and information.  Voluntary participants are needed for a user study entitled “View management and user interface optimization for wide-area mobile augmented reality” at the Moss Arts Center. Participants will have a chance to experience the state-of-the-art technology of Virtual Reality. The Center for Applied Behavior Systems in the VT Psychology department is looking for African American and Caucasian students at VT who would be willing to participate in research examining what cognitive factors are related to learning and performance. 24. HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND FAMILY STUDIES RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY – 2nd posting
Seeking individuals who identify as female, are over the age of 18, and in a monogamous same-sex relationship in which one person identifies as bisexual. Doctoral candidate in the Human Development and Family Studies Department at Virginia Tech is investigating the impact of attitudes regarding bisexuality on relationship satisfaction among female same-sex couples. This dissertation is a two-part study beginning with a survey at: https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8nQe5rRtzJmPqol . Both partners are asked to complete the survey separately, and can indicate interest in follow-up interviews at the end of the survey. Both partners will also be given the option to enter to win a $50 Amazon gift card for participating in the survey. 25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR LIFTING STUDY W/ WEARABLE EXOSKELETONS – 3rd posting
Participants sought for a research study about lifting with and without wearable exoskeletons. Must be 18-35 years old with no recent or prior musculoskeletal disorders or back injuries. A height range of 5′ 5″- 6′ is preferred. Should be able to comfortably lift about 15 lbs from the floor to the waist height. Participants are asked to perform a variety of lifting tasks both with and without the exoskeletons. The training session takes about 1-2 hours and the data collection session takes about 4-5 hours. GLC HIKE TO CASCADES FALL

Join the GLC Fellows and other graduate students as they hike the Cascades trail to the 66-foot waterfall on the top, This hike is of easy-moderate difficulty and all hikers are encouraged to wear athletic shoes and bring lots of water. The hike is about 4 miles round-trip and should take about 1-1.5 hours one way. These interactive workshops introduce participants to the Fulbright program that offers US citizens funding opportunities to research, study, or teach abroad in more than 140 countries. The competition will open in April 2019 for grants for the 2020 – 2021 academic year. Advance planning is crucial to successful candidacies. NOVEMBER PARENT SUPPORT LUNCHEON

The guest speaker will be a Nurse Practitioner who will be talking about common childhood illnesses (at the start of flu season!), telling what to watch for, and answering questions. She will discuss helpful home treatments, as well as when to see a doctor, and when it’s okay for a child to return to school. These questions can be emailed to childcare@vt.edu. As always, partners and spouses are welcome with or without the enrolled graduate student, and children are welcome.

“THE NATURE OF FORGETTING”

Are you a student of neuroscience, human development, psychology, or another discipline that explores the mysteries of the brain? The Moss Arts Center invites you to a free performance of The Nature of Forgetting. Theatre Re collaborated with London neuroscientist Kate Jeffery to create a moving articulation of the countless dimensions of memory and amnesia, linking science with real life experiences. Through physical theatre and compelling live music, The Nature of Forgetting tells the story of Tom, a middle-aged father struggling in the early stages of dementia.
