Grad student Hannah Valentino invites you to “From the Lab Bench to the Whiteboard: The Transition From Researcher at a R1 Institution To Professor At A PUI” featuring Dr. Kristen Long. Dr. Long will talk about the importance of seeking teaching experience at the graduate and postdoctoral levels. She received her Ph.D. in Microbiologyand Immunology at Drexel University College of Medicine; completed a three year Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, and for the last three years has been assistant professor of biology at Mansfield University.

5. SPEED INTERVIEWING

Looking to practice interviewing skills? Take advantage of the opportunity to practice interviewing in a low-key environment and receive immediate feedback from career advisors and VT staff. Every 6-8 minutes participants rotate from one interviewer to the next, answering a different question each time. Grad student Amy Baldwin invites you to The School of Performing Arts’ workshop production of These Shining Lives, by Melanie Marnich. This script is based on the true story of 4 young women who worked for the Radium Dial Company in Ottawa, IL, and suffered the devastating effects of radium poisoning, and then changed the future of workplace safety. Admission is free (reservations are not required).
Running time is approximately 60 minutes.

11. SAIG OFFERING SHORT COURSES COVERING INTRO STATISTICAL TOPICS – 1st posting
SAIG (Statistical Applications and Innovations Group) is offering several Short Courses this semester that may be of interest to grad students covering introductory statistical topics, including computing and methodology topics, in common statistical platforms. These courses include ANOVA in JMP (3/5), PCA in JMP (3/20), Basics of R (3/26), Data Manipulation in R (4/3), Graphics in R Using GGPlot (4/9), Model Selection in R (4/24). 19. VOLUNTEERS FOR STUDY WITH VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) TECHNOLOGIES – 2nd posting
A team is investigating the best ways to interact with Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. This study compares various methods of interaction with virtual data and information. Looking for participants for a user study entitled “View management and user interface optimization for wide-area mobile augmented reality” at the Moss Arts Center. Participants will have a chance to experience the state-of-the-art technology of Virtual Reality. The entire session should take around 90 minutes. 20. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON FINANCIAL DECISION-MAKING – 2nd posting
Must be between 18-55 years of age. Study involves completing an online questionnaire. Participants will be entered into a raffle to receive a $50 Amazon gift card and may be contacted to complete an optional second part of the study, which will be conducted on the Virginia Tech campus during which brain activity measurements will be taken while making financial decisions. Compensation for 2nd optional study is $10-30. Brain activity will be measured using FNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) which leverages optical processes to enable the measurement of real-time neural activity. 22. VOLUNTEERS NEED FOR ACCEPTABILITY STUDY OF EDAMAME – 3rd posting
The VT Sensory Evaluation Lab is recruiting volunteers who are 18 years or older to participate in an acceptability study of edamame (vegetable soybeans). Participants will be asked to view, smell, and taste edamame samples, describe their impressions, and complete a survey. There is no compensation, but participants are eligible to enjoy a nice snack after each session. Those who with allergies to soy products or are pregnant should refrain from participating. Study will be February 18, 20, 22, 25 and/or 27 at Sensory Evaluation Lab, HABB1 205 (1230 Washington St SW). Parking passes available upon request. Time commitment is approx. 30 minutes per session.
