Grad student Jessica Resor invites you to a talk sponsored by The Department of Human Development and Family Science, “Families in the Digital Age: Early Learning, Play And Interactions in the Context of Screen Media,” by Dr. Heather Kirkorian from UW-Madison. Dr. Kirkorian will share findings from her experimental research on the impact of screen media on early learning and play. Since the dramatic increase in young children’s access to and use of electronics, she will consider differential impact based on media content, social context, and individual child factors. Specific topics will include toddlers’ learning from various screen media and the impact of background television on play and parent-child interactions. The talk is open to all students and faculty. 11. EDCI 5954: INFORMAL LEARNING IN NORTHERN ENGLAND – 1st posting
Coast to Coast: Cultural Curriculum, Creative Technologies, Common People, Coal and Curries
(3 credit hours) Winter Session 2019-20 | January 1-18, 2020. This is a unique, intense two-week study abroad experience in the Northern England (Lancashire and Yorkshire) and London. Explore places that you may never otherwise learn about or see on a typical visit to England, while focusing on learning about, as well as creatively documenting, the pedagogy of place. Course designed to take students to cities and towns that represent the industrial heartland of Northern England. Focus of course is how national and local narratives on industrialization, politics, radicalism, race, immigration, gender, class, and sexuality from Northern England are represented within the cultural curriculum. The EchoLab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals for an experimental study that involves participating in an instant messenger group chat to collaborate on a given task. The goal of the study is to observe user habits/patterns in a group chat conversation. Participants must be 18 years and older; active users of any Instant Messenger (IM) App such as Message/Slack/WhatsApp, etc., able to collaborate on the group chat, fill out a survey, and answer post-task interview in English. Duration is approximately 60 minutes. This is a remote study and can be performed from home/library/any other location where the use of smartphones and/or personal computers is permitted. 24. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR AN AUGMENTED REALITY USER STUDY – 3rd posting
The 3D Interaction (3DI) group invites participation in a research study with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. This team is investigating the best ways to interact with AR and VR, and this study compares various methods of interaction with virtual data and information. Study will make use of state-of-the-art VR and AR technologies such as the HTC Vive and Magic Leap One. Participants will come to the Sandbox, Room 160 in the Moss Arts Center. Participants will be asked to complete interaction tasks such as navigation, viewport manipulation, and object selection in either AR or VR then for their comments about these innovative interaction techniques. The entire experimental session will take about 90 min. Experiment will be video and audio recorded for researchers’ further interpretations and analysis of user behavioral patterns. Must speak English, 18+ years old, have normal or corrected to normal vision (contact lenses are fine, no eyeglasses.) Participation will be on first-come-first-serve basis. For more information or to schedule a session, contact Feiyu Lu at feiyulu@vt.edu.

25. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR EXOSKELETON STUDY – 3rd posting
This lab-based study asks how using an exoskeleton changes the physical demands and productivity of both younger and older workers.  Participants must between 18-30 years or 45-60 years old, male or female. Performance is measured during a lifting/lowering task.  Expected findings will guide exoskeleton use for diverse groups of workers. There are 2 sessions each lasting approx.. 2 hours. Compensation is $10/hr. No self-reported current or recent (past 12-months) musculoskeletal problems or injuries.  The exoskeletons do not provide specific information about body size limits for their use, so participants will be excluded if an exoskeleton does not fit comfortably.  Email Albert Moore at amoore@vt.edu to sign up and receive the Informed Consent Form.

GLC HIKE TO TINKER CLIFFS

Join the GLC Fellows and other graduate students as they hike Tinker Cliffs, the third leg in the Triple Crown with great views of the Catawba Valley! Be advised, this hike is not easy going. You will encounter steep climbs and numerous switchbacks, so all hikers are encouraged to wear athletic shoes and bring lots of water. The hike is 7.7 miles round-trip and you should anticipate a hiking time of 4 hours. Join the GLC Fellows and other graduate students on a trip to one of the New River Valley’s best kept secrets! Joe’s Trees is a family owned business that runs a pumpkin patch each fall and a fall farm festival. There are tons of fun activities including hayrides, a pumpkin patch, a corn maze, as well as great food.
