Learn about the wild world of food science with guest experts Erin McKenney and Lester Schonberger. After some science bingo and other warmup games, McKenney of the Wild Sourdough citizen science project will talk about the microbes that ferment our food around the world. After that, Schonberger will talk about how food pantries get their food, and why bread has been in short supply at our local food pantries. 5. GSA CAP AND GOWN PROGRAM – SPRING 2020 EDITION – 1st posting
The GSA realizes that many are disappointed by the cancellation of the graduation ceremony this Spring, and that you’ll also miss out on the photo opportunities that go with that event. However, while we normally rent caps and gowns to graduates, this year we cannot guarantee that these caps and gowns can be cleaned and disinfected in a manner that protects all of us. To avoid concerns related to COVID-19, the GSA will be offering the sale of retired caps and gowns for $25 (Master’s gowns will have the old logo). Payment will only be accepted in cash or check. 6. FOOD SUPPLIES FOR GRADS BY GRADS – 1st posting
The Covid-19 pandemic has negatively impacted graduate students, causing financial burdens and in some cases food insecurity. To alleviate some of the difficulties faced by many, grad students are starting a Give-Food initiative to provide food supplies to students in need of them. Give Food is donations based, where those who are able can donate food supplies, and these supplies can be picked up by other students in need. Drop off non-perishable food items in the Graduate School lobby in the GLC, or stop by the lobby and pick up supplies you need. Students can drop off /pick up supplies at their own convenience while maintaining social distancing. Families need more support now than ever, and LHH is planning to open Jul 8 to help families that need child care as they adjust to the constraints of working, studying and researching from home. Staff will be trained in heightened sanitization procedures, and will be wearing PPE at all times, for everyone’s protection. VT researchers seek to understand how large-scale disasters or tragedies affect smaller communities, specifically how close people feel to their community. Researchers seek VT students to participate in a research study looking into trust in online learning and perceptions of effectiveness for a Psychosocial Human Factors class project. 22. INTL STUDENT MOTHERS SOUGHT FOR RESEARCH PROJECT – 3rd posting
VT researchers are seeking international student mothers of children aged 0-5 years, who are living in a single or nuclear family setup. This research aims to design safe and productive applications which utilize screen media to act as a childcare assistant for international student mothers. Participation is voluntary and confidential. If you choose to participate, you will be contacted for an interview which can take up to 30 minutes and can be either by phone, internet call (Skype, Google Hangout, etc.,) over instant messaging chat (Facebook chat, Google Hangout, etc.), or through email. During the interview, you will be asked questions about your experience of using digital technology for engaging your children. With your permission, we will audio-record the interview for research purposes only. You may choose not to answer any questions for any reason, and may choose not to have your answers to specific questions recorded by asking us to pause the recording. You may also stop at any time and for any reason. You will be entered into a drawing for Amazon Fire tablet for participating in the interview.
