11. CALL FOR FOCUS GROUP MEMBERS WITH BOARD OF VISITORS – 1st posting
The graduate student representative to the Board of Visitors is looking to gather a diverse group of students to discuss 2021-2022 tuition rates, cost of living, and stipends with a member of the Board of Visitors. The Board of Visitors is the governing body at the university that sets tuition rates and will be discussing this topic at their incoming meeting on March 22nd. We are open to all majors and all campuses, both graduate and professional students. We are hoping for to represent the diversity of the graduate student body by convening students from different campus locations, racial and ethnic backgrounds and a multiplicity of world views. 22. GRAD STUDENTS NEEDED FOR FOOD, WATER AND COMMUNITIES RESEARCH STORIES – 1st posting
The editors for Food, Water, and Communities, an ArcGIS StoryMap created and managed by VT graduate students and sponsored by the Center for Communicating Science, are currently recruiting graduate student writers. Food, Water, and Communities stories humanize the reasons scientists conduct research by highlighting communities that have had their fundamental resources impacted by climate change or anthropogenic effects. Interested writers should email Susan Chen (schen518@vt.edu) and Maddy Grupper (maddyag@vt.edu) by March 15th with a 3-5 sentence description of a story of a specific community that has faced a food or water challenge, which has since inspired the graduate students in their work. If selected, writers will be contacted to contribute a full story for the StoryMap. Four authors will be selected to write 500-700 word stories. “Big Lick of Science” is a student-led podcast founded in 2019 by graduate students at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute on the Roanoke Campus of Virginia Tech. We have the dual missions of: (1) providing accessible and digestible science for the lay public while also (2) highlighting the world-class science conducted in Roanoke and Blacksburg by Virginia Tech faculty, students, and post-docs. 25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY ON AUDITORY DISPLAYS AT RAIL CROSSINGS- 2nd posting
The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study to determine the effects of in-vehicle auditory alerts on driver behaviors at Highway-Rail Grade Crossings (HRGCs) on driver response. During the study, you will be asked to drive in a driving simulator environment and react to in-vehicle alerts when approaching rail crossings. This project protocol was reviewed by the Virginia Tech Human Research Protections Program (#19-643). The eligibilities are 1) active driver with a valid license, 2) age 18+ with good health, and 3) normal vision and hearing. The study will last approximately one hour.Each participant will receive a compensation of $10for participation. 26. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED TO PROVIDE DATA FOR A STUDY ON SPENDING, $10 for 10 minutes- 3rd posting 
Participants are needed for a research study to determine how payday timing (e.g., if you’re paid on a Monday, Tuesday, etc.) impacts spending. The entire study is conducted online. You will fill out a very short (7 question) survey and then provide your spending data though Mint.com. You will be compensated at $10 for your time (~10 mins total). The research protocol for this study is approved by VT Institutional Review Board – Project No. 20-909. This study is funded by the Wheeler Institute of the London Business School. 27. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VIRGINIA TECH HELMET LABORATORY RESEARCH STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are needed to help me collect measurements on head shape and head-helmet friction. You may qualify for this research if you are an enrolled Virginia Tech student, above the age of 18, speak English, and can give your own consent. A 40min appointment will be scheduled at a time that works best for you and will take place inside Kelly Hall, conference room 221. Participation will be compensated with $20 for your time and effort. Participating poses no additional risk of harm or discomfort than is typical for performing routine physical or psychological examinations. A COVID-19 risk mitigation plan and precautionary measures are also being taken to minimize possible virus exposure. This study is IRB #20-596.
