5. SUBMISSIONS NEEDED FOR ROOTS AND RESETTLEMENT MAGAZINE – 2nd posting
The Center for Refugee, Migrant and Displacement Studies extended the deadline for submission of poems, songs, visual art, flash fiction, creative non-fiction, and scholarly statements to be featured in a mixed media collection. The Roots and Resettlement magazine (see volume one here ) is an interdisciplinary collection about displacement, resettlement, place, and belonging. One notable submission will receive a cash prize of $500. The fall publication will be featured at the launch of the new Center for Refugee, Migrant, and Displacement Studies at Virginia Tech. 9. FL-AGEP SEEKS ACADEMIC WOMEN OF COLOR TO BECOME FL-AGEP SCHOLARS – 3rd posting
The Florida AGEP Pathways Alliance (FLAGEP), an NSF-sponsored alliance model, is recruiting academic women of color (WOC) to become FL-AGEP scholars. Prospective scholars should be doctoral students (at the prospectus and pre-defense stages), post-doctoral scholars, and early career faculty (pre-tenure). The benefits include: (1) being mentored by a senior scholar in your research area, (2) participating in a 1-week intensive research bootcamp (RBC), (3) receiving a 1-year subscription to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD), and (4) engaging in longitudinal faculty development activities (e.g., invited research talks, teaching apprentices). The objective of the model includes supporting the persistence, recruitment, retention, and promotion of WOC faculty in STEM, or those who intend to become faculty. The scholar model was originally based in Florida but has now gone virtual; therefore, participants are being sought nationally. Please disregard the Florida resident requirement. 10. PEACE CORPS CAMPUS RECRUITER GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP – NEW DEADLINE – 1st posting
The Center for International Research, Education, and Development (CIRED) at VT is searching for a graduate student who is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer to serve as the part-time Campus Peace Corps Recruiter (20 hours/week). The recruiter will be the main point of contact for people interested in joining the Peace Corps. Subject to the availability of funding, position will begin August 2021 and run through Spring Semester 2022. The successful candidate will receive graduate school tuition remission and a stipend. 11. VIRGINIA TECH COMPETITIVE CHEER CLUB SEEKS COACH – 2nd posting
Virginia Tech Competitive Club Cheer is actively seeking someone to fill our coaching position. We are looking for someone with cheerleading experience, either cheering for/coaching at an Allstar gym or cheering in college and coaching experience or experience working with students. Someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about cheerleading and over the age of 25, who is also NCA certified or willing to become NCA certified. The Virginia Tech Crew Team is seeking enthusiastic, dedicated coaches of any level (novice or varsity) to join its staff for the fall 2021 season. The VT Crew Team is a student organization based in Blacksburg, VA that has been operating for 26 years. After great recent success this spring and the promise for future excellence next year, VT Crew is looking for coaches to expand its rapidly growing program. Rowers at VT have experience ranging from novice to 8+ years. Responsibilities include planning and executing an effective training regimen in order to prepare rowers for a competitive racing season and collaborating with student executives to help ensure a well-run program. This program has a great tradition of creating a culture of hard work and dedication among the team. The team is looking to add someone who will strengthen the team in every aspect. 15. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VR HAPTIC GLOVE STUDIES – 1st posting
The Mind Music Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a VR Haptic Glove Studies which investigate the effects of haptic glove on the sense of presence, engagement and usability the users. Participants will be asked to fill out the survey to evaluate the usability, presence, and engagement. Participants will play a VR game with three different input devices – Oculus Quest 2 Controller, bare hands, and VR Haptic Glove we devised. The experiment will take around 30 – 45 minutes and participants will be compensated with $10. Location is CRC Knowledge Work II, Computer Science Department, VT, 2202 Kraft Dr SW, Blacksburg, VA 24060. 16. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR ONLINE EXPERIMENT ON HUMAN BEHAVIOR – 1st posting
Online experiment investigating human behavior, Diana Lab, VT Psychology. One to two sessions, each approximately 30 minutes. Receive choice of Amazon or Kroger e-giftcard: $10 for first session, $15 for second session (10 days later, depending on first session responses). Eligibility: between 18 and 50 years of age, with access to a laptop or desktop computer with an internet connection. Session 1 task: view pictures of ordinary objects and make opinion-based judgments about each object. If first session responses meet our requirements, may be invited via email to participate in second session. Study is entirely online but should be completed in a distraction-free environment. 17. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR YOGA STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study on how yoga may meet physical activity guidelines. Research study conducted by Virginia Tech (#21-325). Eligible Participants: 65+ yrs old, No contraindications to physical activity; comprehension of English; Able to travel to Blacksburg, VA at In Balance Yoga Studio. Study will include heart rate monitoring and accelerometers (wearable devices that track physical movement) used during a yoga class. Time commitment: ~5 hrs spread over a 2 week time period. 18. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR BEHAVIORAL STUDIES ON COLLABORATIVE ONLINE CONTENT AUTHORING – 3rd posting
The Echo Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a collaborative writing (e.g., academic papers, project reports) study through which we aim to investigate the communication occurring between collaborators. We are seeking participants who: are 18 years and older, can fill out a survey in English, uses online services, has written collaboratively with others and can participate in the study across multiple sessions. Depending on the role assigned to you by the researchers, your duration of participation and compensation will change. For one role, duration will be up to 240 minutes total: this includes a pre-survey, writing up two essay drafts, finalizing two essays, and filling out surveys after finalizing each essay. Participants in this role will be compensated with an electronic gift card of $50 after participating in the full study, and will have an opportunity to be paid a bonus of $100 if their essay is chosen as the winning essay. For another role, duration will be up to 140 minutes total: this includes a pre-survey, collaborating on two essays, and filling out surveys after collaborating on each essay. Participants in this role will be compensated with an electronic gift card of $20 after participating in the full study, and will have an opportunity to be paid a bonus of $50 if their essay is chosen as the winning essay. Both participants will fill out a pre-study survey as well as complete surveys after each collaboration, and a pair of collaborators will have a chance of winning a bonus ($50 or $100 for each collaborator depending on the role assigned by the researcher) if the collaborated essay is selected as the winning essay.
