1. DIVERSITY STATEMENT WRITING WORKSHOPS
Monday, September 20 and Monday, October 18, 12-1:30pm, Zoom
What does diversity mean to you and how will you incorporate diversity into your work? During this two-part, interactive workshop, you will think about the importance of diversity, write a draft diversity statement, and provide feedback on a peer’s diversity statement. By the end of this series, you will have a completed statement for your portfolio or resume. You will also hear about services offered to graduate students from the VT Writing Center. 17. JOHN E. DOOLEY STUDENT ENGAGEMENT GRANT ACCEPTING PROPOSALS – 1st posting
VT Engage: The Center for Leadership and Service Learning is excited to request proposals from students for the 2020-21 John E. Dooley Student Engagement Grant (JEDSEG). This grant is made possible by the generosity of many donors, and funds highly motivated students or student teams planning to implement community-based civic engagement projects. This year there is a total of $1,500 available (one $1500 grant or two, $750 grants) with an application deadline of October 10 at 11:59pm. Recipients of the grant will be notified in mid-October and projects should be completed by April 9, 2021.  Details and related proposal forms can be found at:

18. STUDENT TITLE IX ADVISORY BOARD – 1st posting
The Office for Equity and Accessibility is re-convening its Student Title IX Advisory Board. We continually seek to improve Virginia Tech’s Title IX process. Incorporating students’ experiences and insights is central to ensuring our process works. The purpose of the Board will be to provide comment and feedback on the university’s response to reports of gender based harassment and violence.  The Student Title IX Advisory Board will meet 3-4 times each semester to hold discussions and provide feedback directly to the university’s Title IX Coordinator.  Issues for discussion may include: review of university’s policies and procedures; review of resources available to students; review of the university’s communication and outreach efforts, including stopabuse.vt.edu; and feedback on prevention education and campus climate initiatives. To gather a group with varied perspectives and experiences, student from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. 19. SURVEY ON RESEARCH ETHICS – 2nd posting
This fall, Virginia Tech will participate in the Survey of Organizational Research Climate (SOURCE), developed by the National Center for Principled Leadership & Research Ethics (NCPRE) and its partners. SOURCE is a validated instrument specifically designed to measure the climate of research integrity in academic organizations. The results of this survey will be used to evaluate and enhance VT policies, processes, and educational efforts around the responsible conduct of research, helping to foster an environment of ethical research and innovation at Virginia Tech. The survey will be conducted from September 13, 2021 to October 3, 2021. Starting September 13, NCPRE will send a secure link to the survey to all graduate students, faculty, and staff who are, or have been, involved in research at Virginia Tech. 24. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CLIMATE CHANGE SCIENCE-POLICY PROJECT: VECTOR-BORNE DISEASE – 1st posting
Interested in vector-borne disease, climate change, or science policy more generally? Join the VT Science Policy Education and Advocacy Club’s new interdisciplinary advocacy project to combat either tick or mosquito-borne disease from a natural resource lens. 25. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MEDICAID EXPENDITURE IN VIRGINIA SCIENCE POLICY PROJECT – 1st posting
The Science Policy Education and Advocacy Club (SPEAC) is starting a new project this semester to provide policy recommendations to mitigate the effect of influential factors on Medicaid expenditure in Virginia. Using the All-Payers database and 35 recently discovered influential factors of Medicaid expenditure, we will analyze the existing Virginia code, perform a comparative analysis with laws in other states, and provide recommendations to combat the effect of these influential factors on Medicaid cost in Virginia. No previous policy experience is needed, and all disciplines are welcome.  We will develop policy memos for the Commonwealth of Virginia. 26. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR AUGMENTED REALITY USER STUDY – 1st posting
The 3DI group is seeking volunteers to participate in a research study with augmented reality (AR) technologies. Our team is exploring user interfaces that can help users to communicate when far from each other. The project is supervised by Dr. Doug Bowman in Computer Science and will use HoloLens 2 AR headset. The total estimated study time is about 2 hours. The main study session will be conducted at Moss Art Center. 27. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION FOCUS GROUP – 1st posting
Are you interested in participating in a focus group about alternative transportation? This research will help us to gather current information on the use of alternative transportation and the subsequent safety measures used to then develop an educational program for promoting and increasing the safe use of alternative transportation in and around the Virginia Tech campus. 28. PARTICIPANTS WITH PERFECT/CORRECTED NORMAL VISION NEEDED FOR AUGMENTED REALITY STUDY-2nd posting
3D Interaction group in the Sandbox, Moss Art Center, is looking for participants to take part in a user study.  We invite you to take part in this research study if you are an English speaker of age 18 years or older with perfect or corrected normal vision (contact lenses are supported). In this experiment, the participants will be asked to access digital information in one of our two contexts: a) a solo context where they are reading a piece of paper, b) a social context where they are talking to someone else (the investigator, in this experiment). The participants will be asked to use one of our three interfaces (a smartphone interface and two Interfaces designed for wearable AR eyeglasses) to access information from a set of mobile applications.  The study will be recorded for further analysis. We anticipate that completion of this study will take approximately 75 minutes. Participants who complete the task will be compensated $15 for their work. 29. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RACE DIFFERENCES IN FOOT LOADING AND ENGAGEMENT STUDY – 2nd posting
The Granata Lab at Virginia Tech is looking for participants in a research study (Protocol 21-479). This research study aims to determine the impact of race and other factors on foot loading and research engagement. Once consented participants will complete three questionnaires and ten walking trials while barefoot. Participation consists of one visit that lasts approximately 30 minutes. Compensation is $10 for full study participation. Eligible participants will be healthy young adults ages 18-30, identify as either African American or White American, have had no injury in the past 6 months that limited physical activity for more than 2 days, have no history of lower extremity surgery, and must be comfortable walking without assistance. 30. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY ON THE REUSE OF FURNITURE – 3rd posting
The research is aimed at understanding the practices of local reuse of furniture and the role played by local online platforms in enabling reuse, so that functional products are not disposed of in the landfill. Participants must be students who are 18 years or older. Participants will be asked to complete an online survey that will take 8-10 minutes. 31. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH ON HARD CIDER – 3rd posting
The Sensory Evaluation Laboratory at Virginia Tech seeks panelists to smell and taste hard ciders (IRB 19-1067). To participate in this study, you must be 21 years or older and be vaccinated against COVID-19. This study has multiple sessions over several weeks. The purpose is to identify desirable (or undesirable) sensory attributes for Virginia hard apple cider and relate sensory components to consumer liking. This is a research study, and results may be published. When you participate in a sensory panel, you will receive snacks as a token of our appreciation after each session. 37. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT WRITING WORKSHOPS
Wednesday, October 6and October 27: 11:30am-1:00pm, Zoom
What do you value as a teacher? What teaching techniques do you utilize? During this two-part, interactive workshop, you will think about your teaching style and preferences, write a draft teaching philosophy, and provide feedback on a peer’s teaching philosophy statement. By the end of this series, you will have a completed statement for your portfolio or resume. You will also hear about services offered to graduate students from the VT Writing Center. Please register by Friday, October 1st at noon. You need to attend both workshops. We have space for 20 students, so please register soon! Hosted by the Graduate School’s Office of Recruitment, Diversity, and Inclusion, and the Graduate and Professional Student Senate.

We’ll cover both academic and industry interview processes and the differences between phone, video, one-way, and in-person interview formats. Graduate students are welcome to bring any questions or concerns they have about interviewing with them, especially an interview question that tends to stump you so we can talk about strategies together!
