  3. FLIP THE FAIR EVENT RECRUITING PARTICIPANTS – SIGN UP BY OCT 22 – 1st posting
    The Flip the Fair Project is a flipped science fair where scientists create and present science-fair-style posters, which are judged by elementary school students (grades 3-5). These students will judge several categories, and the winners (as determined by the students) will receive prizes! The goal of this event is two-fold: one, to give children the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research from “real life” scientists; and two, to give scientists the opportunity to practice their science communication skills.  This opportunity is open to graduate students, postdocs, and technicians! The flipped science fair will be held Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 1-3 p.m. at the Melrose Branch Library in Roanoke.  We ask that all presenters be available from 12-4 p.m. that day. Transportation from Blacksburg to the event will be provided. We will be holding a science communication workshop and poster-making session on Friday, November 5, 1-5 p.m. for all presenters!   4. LITTLE HOKIE HAND-ME-DOWN ACCEPTING DONATIONS – 1st posting
    New or gently used clothes, books, toys, lactation aids, strollers, unexpired car seats, baby gear, diapers, etc are needed for the 8th annual Little Hokie Hand-Me-Down event. Items donated should be for children ages 0 to 10. This program is designed to benefit Virginia Tech graduate students and families. Items can be dropped off at the Women’s Center, 206 Washington St SW, October 10-November 8. Donations should be completely boxed or contained in plastic bags. On November 9 (12-5pm) and November 10 (10am-2pm) graduate students will be able to browse the donations in Owens ballroom and get free items.     The 2021-2022 P.E.O. Scholar Award provides a $20,000 scholarship opportunity for women graduate students in doctoral programs. P.E.O. (www.peointernational.org) provides financial aid for the education of women in higher education. The three Blacksburg Chapters coordinate efforts to identify potential applicants to nominate for this prestigious merit-based award.   2. GLC ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST – 3rd posting
    This fall’s contest theme is “Reunited.” Classes are mostly in-person, restaurants are open, and events are taking place. Life is starting to look a little closer to normal. Show us what you are glad to be reunited with after being away from it for so long. Is it family, friends, eating inside of a restaurant, going to a movie, the joy of community, attending an event or maybe just seeing someone besides your roommate?   Reunited, and it feels so good!  All submissions must be created or photographed by current graduate students.  Submissions should include a short title and description/explanation of the entry.     The One Health Working Group is happy to announce that we will be hosting the Annual One Health Case Competition virtually this year on Saturday, November 6th in celebration of International One Health Day. What is it? Teams comprising DVM, MPH, MD/DO, and PhD/MS (any field) students compete to solve cases using a One Health approach.   2. CHILDREN AGED 3-4 AND THEIR PARENTS OR PRIMARY CAREGIVERS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY – 1st posting
    The Children’s Emotions Lab in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at VT is looking for parents of preschool-aged children (3-4-year-old children) to participate in a new research study focusing on parenting behaviors and children’s emotions. To accommodate the current public health crisis, parents will complete online questionnaires about their own and their children’s behaviors and emotions. Follow-up participation opportunities are available. Participants will earn $5 for each participation opportunity and families who complete all opportunities will be entered into a drawing for an additional $50 gift card.   3. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY EXAMINING HOW CHOLINE INTAKE INFLUENCES HEALTH – 1st posting
    This study will require 5 visits to the lab, wearing a continuous glucose monitor for four days in total, consumption of a supplement or placebo at 4 time points, and a time commitment of approximately 12 hours.   Participants must be: 18-65 years of age, not taking medications that influence the study results, not have severe obesity, non-smokers, not pregnant, without any major medical problems, without any known choline allergies, and fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If you are on a diuretic or are taking medications such as aspirin, antibiotics, prebiotics, and probiotics, you are not eligible for this study. You will receive information on your blood pressure, cholesterol, and other health information.  You may receive up $100 to compensate you for your time.  You will receive $20 for completing session 2, session 3, and session 4. After completing session 5 you will receive $40. There is no compensation for completing the first session.   1. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR ROBOT AND HUMAN CO-ADAPTATION STUDY – 3rd posting
    We are interested in developing robot teams that can collaborate with humans! Specifically, we want to understand what types of robot teams encourage humans to join in and participate. In this study, you will be working with a team of two robots on a task. You will be asked to control the robots using a joystick. You and the robot will be kept separate at all times (i.e., you will not need to physically interact with the robot). At the end of the study, we will ask you about your experiences. Overall, the study includes both robot interaction and survey activities. We anticipate that the experiments will take a total of 30 minutes. To be eligible, you must be between 18 and 65 years old, and free from any medical conditions that would prevent you from moving and sensing the robot. If you would like to participate or have any questions, please contact Soheil Habibian at habibian@vt.edu.
