1. BECOMING THE FREEDOM RACE: THE JOYS AND PERILS OF WRITING A FUTURISTIC NOVEL TRILOGY ABOUT RACE, FLIGHT, AND HERITAGE
Monday, February 14, 12pm, Graduate Life Center Multipurpose Room
Lucinda Roy, Alumni Distinguished Professor in Creative Writing, will talk about her futuristic trilogy The Dreambird Chronicles. The Freedom Race, the first book in the series, was published last July. A wave of secessionism has divided the country into liberty and segregationist regions. In the Disunited States’ Homestead Territories, Black and mixed-race laborers are not classified as human. Instead, they are known as “botanicals” or “seeds.” Yet these so-called seeds have found creative ways to revolt, including the creation of a game inside a “flying birdcage”. Lucinda Roy will talk about how she came to believe that secessionism could be on the horizon for the U.S. Her tale of magical realism pays tribute to African Diasporic narratives of flight, and to the courage of Dreamers who dare to believe that dreams are “promises the imagination makes to itself,” even if it costs us our lives. Register at https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8qcIh31hH9B2GgK. Lunch will be provided. Questions, email ordi@vt.edu
