10. EVALUATING LITERATURE & CRITICALLY APPRAISING RESEARCH

Critical appraisal is a universally useful skill for any literature review method. In this 2 hour session, we’ll discuss the importance and value of evaluating literature and critical appraising research. Participants will be introduced to several critical appraisal tools that can help researchers to evaluate the risk of bias in studies and reviews. 15. MOUNTAIN VALLEY PIPELINE ECOTHEATRE WORKSHOP

The Frimpong Lab at Virginia Tech and Art for Environmental Justice are partnering to offer an ecotheatre devised theatre workshop on Nov 9-11 from 5-9 pm centered around the impacts the controversial Mountain Valley Pipeline has on local aquatic and human communities. 20. GRADUATE SCHOOL SEEKING GRADUATE STUDENT TOUR GUIDES – 2nd posting
The Graduate School is seeking graduate students to serve as tour guides to prospective graduate students for the Spring 2023 semester. Applicants must have good communication skills, an eagerness to share VT with others, familiarity with campus location, and be willing to conduct 2-5 tours a semester.  Tours are typically 1.5 hours. Applicants must also have a current valid driver’s license, though walking tours will also be offered. Tour guides will be provided with training and will receive a small stipend at the end of the semester. Assistive Robotics Laboratory at Mechanical Engineering Department is seeking healthy male/females who can walk more than 2.5 hours a day (with breaks). 25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FMRI DATA SONIFICATION STUDY – 1st posting
Volunteers needed for the Mind Music Machine Lab’s study in evaluating music samples that were created through the sonification of fMRI data. This is a Virginia Tech research study (IRB Number: 21-839). The objective of this study is to evaluate usability and user perception on the sonification of fMRI data. During the study, you will be asked to rate different sonification samples based on subjective measures and determine what neurological state each sample represents. 26. SCIENCE COMMUNICATION OPPORTUNITY: FOOD, WATER, AND COMMUNITIES BLOG CALL FOR WRITERS – 1st posting
Do you have a story to share about a community and natural resources? Looking for a unique published science communication opportunity? The editors of the Food, Water, and Communities blog, sponsored by the VT’s Center for Communicating Sciences, are currently recruiting graduate students to share their stories about communities that have faced a natural resource challenge and how that challenge inspired their career or graduate work. Interested writers should email Alaina Weinheimer (alainarw@vt.edu) and Marti Wagnon (michellew@vt.edu) with a 3-5 sentence description of their story by November 11th, 2022 for the Fall cycle. Writers can describe a community that influenced their own work or interview a peer to write about. If selected, writers will be contacted to contribute a full story for the StoryMap. Up to six authors will be selected to write 500-700 word stories. The VT Center for Economic and Community Engagement, in partnership with the Virginia Tech Foundation, is conducting a comprehensive study of the university’s contributions to the region and its economy. This study will help to better understand the economic effects of university activity on the Town of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, and the surrounding region. Findings from this study will be shared with partners in and outside of the university, providing a more transparent story of how the university influences the regional economy annually. We are seeking participants for a study on creative programming for 3D environments. In this study, participants will perform basic programming creative tasks such as creating a forest and a solar system. Participants will use a visual programming language and any level of programming skill is welcome. This research study will be held in the Newman Library 122 and will take approximately one hour. We are seeking participants that: are 18 years or older, can follow instructions in English, have perfect or corrected vision (lenses or glasses), have basic knowledge of programming, understand concepts such as variables, if-statement, loop. In this autobiographical solo show, writer-performer Dante Fuoco excavates fifteen years of family home video—not only the sweet early years, curated by Dad, but also the tortured tween years, filmed by son. When Dante’s repressed queer desires are suddenly exposed, he must reckon with telling the truth after decades of lies. Every year, the Graduate School, Graduate and Professional Student Senate, and the Women’s Center hold Little Hokie Hand-Me-Down, an event that offers graduate students and staff with children an opportunity to “shop” for gently used clothing and other items. Graduate students, staff, and others can shop for free items at the event. November 15, from noon until 5pm, is for graduate students only. November 16, from 8am until noon, staff, other students, and graduate students are welcome. 37. SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR PERFORMS HOPE: IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING

Resounding with sheer jubilation, three-time Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir brings Hope: It’s Been a Long Time Coming, a program celebrating American and South African artists associated with struggles for civil rights and social justice throughout their countries’ complex histories. From South African freedom songs to the music of Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, and Mahalia Jackson, to traditional African gospel and spirituals, Soweto brings audiences to their feet.
