1. TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND COMMERCIALIZATION CAREERS PANEL

Technology transfer and technology commercialization efforts rely on knowledgeable staff at universities to perform assessments of newly disclosed inventions. The ability of PhD-trained scientists to research subject matter within a specific target space, synthesize this available information, and come to a decision on the potential impact of a new technology seeking to operate in the space is critical to this successful review of new technologies. 2. GLC CAFÉ

3. WINTER BREAK AND JANUARY HOURS FOR GLC AND GRADUATE SCHOOL – 1st posting
The Graduate Life Center and Graduate School offices will be closed December 23-January 2, as will all university offices. We will reopen on Tuesday, January 3. During the weeks before the first semester begins, the Graduate School offices will be open during our regular hours: 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Please note we will be closed on January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but offices will be open as usual when the semester begins on January 17.

6. EAST AFRICA INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATORS  – 1st posting
This program is designed to expose Virginia Tech faculty, administrators, and graduate students and Virginia secondary school educators to the languages, cultures, and histories of Tanzania and Kenya in order to gain a more holistic view of East Africa. The summer institute provides educators an opportunity to travel to Tanzania and Kenya for four weeks to acquire first-hand knowledge, experience and resource materials for curriculum development that can be used to enrich African area studies teaching and better integrate global or intercultural dimensions into the university and high school curriculum. An online, asynchronous Health Sciences/Biomedical section of this elective 1-credit course on offer this Spring 2023. You are welcome to join regardless of your disciplinary or degree focus, however you will get the most out of it if you have a research interest related to health or biomedical sciences. This course is designed to increase successful completion of comprehensive literature reviews and project proposals; Identify key information sources, use advanced searching skills and citation management tools; and explore important research planning topics such as: building your online scholarly presence and professional identity, evidence-based practice, data management, sharing research results, and authorship.

9. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A VIRTUAL REALITY USER STUDY – 2nd posting
A Virginia Tech research team is investigating the differences in human interactions with Virtual Reality (VR) environments using different platforms. This study evaluates VR environments and how users interact with them. Therefore, we are looking for participants for a user study entitled “Understanding Human Interactions with Virtual and Augmented Environments and Their Associated Tools (IRB – 20-787)”. Participants will have a chance to experience the state-of-the-art technology of Virtual Reality and interact with developed models using VR wearable headgear and controllers. The entire session will take 60-90 minutes. Participants will receive a $10 Gift card. The participants must be 18+ years old, speak English, and be able to use a computer. The GPSS Research Symposium is a unique opportunity for graduate and advanced undergraduate students to bring ideas and research findings from different disciplines and showcase their scholarly pursuits and achievements. It provides a platform for exhilarating exchanges of ideas, invigorating interactions, and valuable networking between participants, faculty, departments, and research entities, which could pave the way for interdisciplinary research discussion and future collaboration. The theme is “Looking to Our Roots: Community Engagement, Creative Collaboration, and Conscientious Research”. The most competitive presentations will receive scholarship awards.

11. SEEKING STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES FOR VT SEXUAL VIOLENCE CULTURE AND CLIMATE WORKING GROUP – 2nd posting
The VT Sexual Violence Culture and Climate (SVCC) work group is recruiting Student Representatives to serve on various subcommittees. The expected time commitment is approximately 1-hour per week over the course of the year. Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students across all VT campuses are encouraged to apply, along with nontraditional students and students with diverse identities and backgrounds. 12. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY – IMMERSIVE DATA ANALYTICS – 2nd posting
Traditionally, data analysis and decision-making are done by visualizing data on a 2D screen. However, with new technologies, it is now possible to visualize data in 3D environments using mixed reality headsets such as Microsoft HoloLens. This study aims to evaluate how effective it is to analyze data in a 3D immersive environment using the Microsoft HoloLens 2 device in various configurations. The research study will take place in Perform Studio at Moss Arts Center, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, and last about 90 mins. Participants will be compensated $30 upon completion of the study. The study has been approved by Virginia Tech Institutional Review Board (IRB #19-118). 13. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS DEEP DIVE WORKSHOP
4-day workshop, Jan 9-12, 2023; each day 10am – 3pm with a 1 hour lunch break 12-1pm, Zoom
The Evidence Synthesis Services (ESS) team at the University Libraries in collaboration with the Statistical Applications and Innovations Group (SAIG) will host the third Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Deep Dive, January 9-12, 2023. During this 4-day workshop participants will become familiar with the major required steps of this methodology, practice relevant skills, and consider the many decisions necessary for a successful synthesis. 14. NUTSHELL GAMES
February 8, 2023, 5:30pm, Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre at the Moss Arts Center
Attention all graduate researchers: Registration for the annual Nutshell Games is OPEN! Hosted by Virginia Tech’s Center for Communicating Science, the Nutshell Games is a fun and friendly research presentation competition, to be held this year at 5:30 p.m. February 8 at the Moss Arts Center. Can you explain your research in 90 seconds? That’s how long you’ll have, and we’ll help you prepare with a workshop 5:30-8:30 p.m. January 31, also at the Moss. Participants will be ranked by a panel of judges consisting of local community members, Virginia Tech faculty, and even a 7th grader. Five winners will each receive a prize of $500 in professional development funds. Don’t delay; only 30 presenters get to give talks.
