Drawing on dance, visual art, and theater practices, we’ll build connections between these ideas and our stories. You may be interested in this workshop if you are curious about the role of the arts to help us look at civic processes and structural inequities anew. Led by Andreza Jorge, Hiromi Okumura and C. Meranda Flachs-Surmanek as part of the 2023 Diversity Scholars program out of the Office of Recruitment, Diversity, and Inclusion. Refreshments will be provided. 51. EQUITY IN SCIENCE DISCUSSION WITH AUTHOR JULIE R. POSSELT AND JASMINE LEWIS
Thursday, April 27, 6pm, Zoom
Posselt argues that accelerating the movement for inclusion in science requires more effective collaboration across boundaries that typically separate people and scholars–across the social and natural sciences, across the faculty-student-administrator roles, and across race, gender, and other social identities. Ultimately this book is a call for academia to place equal value on expertise, and on those who do the work of cultural translation. Join us for a virtual conversation to continue the discussion on equity in science. Register at https://virginiatech.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_IUpxb_O3T0yWgmQabHrQCw. If you have any questions, email Jasmine Lewis at ljasmine@vt.edu

52. DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION IN SCIENCE BOOK CLUB
Thursday, April 27, 6-7pm, Virtual
Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) scientists have made significant contributions with lasting impacts to various fields of science, including physics, biology, computer science, and more. However, BIPOC scientists are still vastly underrepresented in almost all fields of science. In recent years, there have been growing efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in science. It is important that we continue to support these efforts in order to create a more inclusive and equitable future for the field of science. Please join us for our first graduate student book club event where we will be chatting with Julie R. Posselt about her book, “Equity in Science: Representation, Culture, and the Dynamics of Change in Graduate Education” on April 27 at 6pm via Zoom. https://forms.gle/buctHhR64DHGYSSi8.
