As we gear up for another faculty application period in Fall 2023, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is hosting a series of new faculty hire conversations with individuals who have recently navigated the faculty job market to land assistant professor positions at Virginia Tech and beyond. 6. STS SEMINAR COURSE: COMMUNICATING ACADEMIC IDEAS TO NON-ACADEMIC AUDIENCES – 2nd posting
STS-5424/CRN 91255, “Communicating Academic Ideas to Non-Academic Audiences,” will be offered in fall 2023. The course explores its topic in the context of public communications, online media, publishing, and promotional campaigns. Light on reading but heavy on brainstorming, the course will focus on storytelling and script-writing for YouTube videos or other media as modes of communication. Students will be encouraged to develop popular communications of their own work and plan possible ways of building a media platform around it. In parallel, students will work in groups to create videos around the core theme of housing crises on the local, national, and global level, with special attention to the New River Valley and surrounding areas. Videos created will be shown at an event at the end of Spring 2024 focused on creating inclusive dialogue around local housing issues. 9. GRADUATE ASSISTANT FOR THE 2023-2024 ACADEMIC YEAR – 2nd posting
The College of Science Dean’s Office is seeking applications from graduate students interested in an academic year graduate assistantship. Funded by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning as part of the Bridge Experience Program, this position will work with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs to collect information on internship opportunities relevant for College of Science undergraduate students. The graduate student will build and maintain a comprehensive and user-friendly database on internships. We are looking for an enthusiastic and well-rounded individual who possesses excellent communication skills.
