  • GRADUATE SCHOOL: In-person advising, drop-off or pick-up of documents and materials, and a space to study and take a break! Visit SHIP (120 GLC),summer walk-in hours starting June 1st will be held on Monday and Thursday 9:00-4:00pm. The Graduate School offices will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. for the summer. 6. GPSS GRADUATE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM EXTENDED DEADLINE – 1st posting
The Graduate and Professional Student Senate is now accepting applications for the senate’s Graduate Research Development Program. The new application deadline is August 15th at 11:59 p.m. EST. Master’s students are eligible to receive $1000 and doctoral students are eligible for receive up to $1500. Funds may be requested for travel, lab analyses, supplies and other expenses incurred for degree-contingent research. $10,000 will be distributed. 7. APPLY TO THE GPSS TRAVEL FUND PROGRAM – 1st posting
The GPSS Travel Fund Program (TFP) provides grants to partially offset expenses associated with graduate student conference travel, including transportation, registration fees, lodging, and meals for domestic and international travel. Full-time graduate students presenting research conducted as part of a Virginia Tech degree program are eligible to apply. Due to limited funding, an individual graduate student may only receive one award per academic year (Summer to Spring). The Fall 2023 Cycle Travel Fund Program opens on July 17th and closes on August 14th. The Fall Cycle covers any conferences attended between October 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023. 9. OPPORTUNITY TO ENROLL IN ALCE 5224 TEAM SCIENCE, COOPERATION, AND DISCIPLINARY WORK – 1st posting
This fall semester is a new offering of ALCE 5224 Team Science, Cooperation, and Interdisciplinary Work, (CRN 91672) in a traditional face-to-face format. The class will meet Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 11:15 AM to 12:05 PM, in Litton-Reaves 1800. Dr. Curt Friedel will be the instructor. The complex problems of today and tomorrow can no longer be solved by one expert. Research teams and creative teams are needed to work together to solve these societal problems. The goal is then to utilize diversity of perspectives from the team without the diversity of perspectives pulling the team apart. This course will cover concepts of individual and team readiness, effectiveness, protocols, training, and outcomes in team science and cooperative processes. 12. GA POSITION: DOD-USDA GRANT PROJECT – 1st posting
National Project Leader for OneOp /Virginia Cooperative Extension faculty member seeks a full-time (20 hours/week) Graduate Assistant for a full year (12 month) appointment beginning immediately. This is a remote position with the opportunity for long-term funding and growth for the right candidate. The GA will work closely with the NPL on all aspects of adult online education program development and delivery, program evaluation, federal grant administration/management, and staff support. The successful candidate will be interested in adult education, the development and evaluation of online learning opportunities for adult professionals, and federal grant administration efforts. The Center for Health Behavior Research at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion, located in Roanoke, is conducting a 5 week research study in which participants will taste several flavors, drink flavored beverages, and have their blood sugar levels measured. 14. HOMEFIELD FARM – VOLUNTEERS FOR FALL – 1st posting
Homefield Farm is a partnership between Dining Services and CALS. It is the only certified organic operation owned by a university in Virginia. Volunteers gain experience in all aspects of farm care. Fall semester focuses heavily on the harvest season. Volunteering will allow you the opportunity to experience food production from the very beginning. It’s a great opportunity to break away from campus, to gain hands-on experiences and to add to your resume. No experience needed. 15. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR TURMERIC SUPPLEMENTATION RESEARCH STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study evaluating the effects of 4 weeks of oral Turmeric supplementation on markers of oxidative stress and inflammation (IRB 22-646). This study comprises of two visits, separated by 4 weeks of oral Turmeric supplementation provided by the research team. Participants will undergo a graded exercise test (VO2max test) on a treadmill, while being connected to a metabolic cart. A blood sample will be drawn via venipuncture before and after the treadmill test. Study measurements will include blood pressure, body composition, bone mineral density, VO2max, and anthropometry. Eligible participants must be woman and men in good general health between the ages of 18-45, non-smoker, free from chronic diseases and are physically active for 2 or more days per week. 16. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A TIME-LAPSE VIDEO RESEARCH STUDY  – 2nd posting
The Echolab is recruiting participants for a research study to investigate the effectiveness of watching time-lapse videos as a process of self-reflection. Our team is studying how watching time-lapse videos about past computer activities could facilitate the procedure of self-reflection and improve knowledge workers’ working productivity with uncovered pros and cons. For this study, we will install two applications: Time-Lapse Video and RescueTime on participants’ computers. Each day during the study, participants will be asked to check each application’s result and fill out a daily survey. The whole study will continue for four weeks. We are seeking participants are: 1)18 years and older, 2) A macOS computer user, 3) Working as a knowledge worker, 4) Allowing installing and running external applications on your working computer to record screen activities with permission from the machine owner, and 5) Users who are the sole user of their machine. After the completion of the study, each participant will be compensated with a $60 gift card and a one-month RescueTime plan ($12). 17. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED: DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY ON AUTOMATED VEHICLES AND ANXIETY – 2nd posting
Volunteers needed to participate in a driving simulator study to explore driving events and anxiety in automated driving. This project protocol was reviewed by the Virginia Tech Human Research Protections Program (#23-284). During the study, you will operate a driving simulator through multiple driving scenarios. For the entirety of the driving journey, the automated driving system will operate the driving task. You will encounter different driving events over the course of the study and react to them. 18. FEMALE RUNNERS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY – 3rd posting
Participants are needed for a study evaluating the effects of jumping exercises on bone health in female runners (IRB 22-168). As part of this study, you will be asked to consume a reduced-calorie diet that will be provided by the research team and participate in two phases of supervised treadmill runs and jumping exercises on 5 consecutive days. Study measurements will include blood draw, body composition, bone density, VO2max, and exercise efficiency. Eligible participants must be a woman in good general health between the ages of 18-35, non-smoker, regular menstrual cycle, not on hormonal birth control, can run at least 60-90 minutes per day for 5 consecutive days, not taking any medications that could affect study results, and not pregnant or lactating. 20. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR AN EMPATHIC IN-VEHICLE AGENT STUDY – 3rd posting
The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study (IRB# 23-041). The purpose of the study is to investigate whether empathic responses from in-vehicle agents in frustrating driving contexts affect drivers’ performance and their affective states. During the study, you will be asked to complete an emotion induction writing task and conduct a driving task with a motion-based driving simulator. You will also be asked to fill out different questionnaires regarding your current emotional state, trust level, and impression of the in-vehicle agents. Throughout the experiment, we will collect your physiological data through a smartwatch-like device. The study will last approximately 60 minutes. Participants must have an eligible driver’s license and at least two years of driving experience (other than US will be okay), 18+ years old, and have normal or corrected-to-normal vision.
