8. DISCUSSION WITH ANDRE BOUCHARD THE MOSS ARTS CENTER GUEST CURATOR

Join Andre Bouchard for a wide-ranging conversation on his efforts as an intercultural activist, employing the arts to build bridges and reverse the invisibility that marginalizes Native people in the U.S. Bouchard will be serving as guest curator with the Moss Arts Center in the 2024-2025 season. Bouchard (of Kootenai/Ojibwe/Pend d’Oreille/Salish descent) is an activist, agent, director, producer, and consultant who was born and raised on the Flathead Reservation in western Montana. Co-hosted by the Ati: Wa:oki Indigenous Community Center.

9. DISTRACTED DRIVING SUMMIT STUDENT POSTER COMPETITION

Virginia Tech will be hosting the 10th Annual Distracted Driving Summit in Blacksburg, VA on September 13-14, 2023. This year there will be a student poster competition on September 14th, 2023. 11. KIDS NIGHT OUT FREE CHILDCARE

Kids’ Night Out returns! Free childcare for graduate student families at the VT Women’s Center, 6:30-8:00 pm on Thursday evenings when classes are in session. Advance sign-up is required, and there are limited spaces. Childcare is provided by volunteers from the Chi Delta Alpha sorority, and children must be toilet trained. There are games, crafts, snacks, maybe a movie, and plenty of fun with the sitters. The Office for Equity and Accessibility (oea.vt.edu) invites students to join the Student Title IX Advisory Board, a group that convenes regularly to provide feedback on the university’s response to reports of gender-based harassment and violence. The board will meet three to four times each semester to discuss issues and engage directly with the university’s Title IX coordinator. 23. CIRTL AT VIRGINIA TECH TEACHING ASSOCIATE BADGE PROGRAM – 2nd posting
CIRTL at Virginia Tech announces its new teaching Associate Badge program. Participants will engage in programming focused on foundational knowledge about teaching and complete a teaching philosophy activity to start building their teaching portfolios. Upon completing program requirements, participants will receive a digital badge recognizing their connection and association with effective teaching practices. The program is open to graduate students and postdoctoral associates regardless of teaching experience or responsibilities. Multiple options for program completion are available. 24. GRADUATE SCHOOL STATEMENT AND GUIDANCE REGARDING GENERATIVE AI TOOLS – 3rd posting
Graduate School Dean Aimée Surprenant and Dale Pike, associate vice provost for Technology-enhanced Learning (TLOS), posted a statement providing guidance regarding generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, and how these emerging technologies might impact teaching and research. As graduate instructors and graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) consider how to address these issues in their classes, they are encouraged to keep the guidelines in mind. Those include familiarizing themselves with the technology and its implications; having open discussions with students on responsible AI use and citation expectations. updating syllabi to directly address use of generative AI and establish policies for citing its use; focusing assignments on applying skills and knowledge over reciting facts, emphasizing critical analysis, individual perspectives, and personal reflection where appropriate; and considering formative assessment strategies that emphasize learning processes over summative assessment strategies that emphasize the finished product. 26. CALL FOR MUSICIANS FOR THE ITRAAB ARABIC MUSIC ENSEMBLE – 3rd posting
Open to students, faculty, staff, and community members, the Itraab Ensemble can now be taken for credit through the School of Performing Arts. Under the direction of ethnomusicologist Anne Elise Thomas, the ensemble learns musical pieces from various parts of the Arab world for performance on percussion, voice, strings (violin, viola, cello, and bass), and Arabic instruments (`ud, qanun, and nay). Some instruments are provided for use. Musical experience is a plus, but not necessary. New members must join in the first two weeks of each semester (fall and spring) and commit to an entire semester of rehearsing and performing. 27. ASSISTANT COACH, VT COMPETITIVE CHEER CLUB TEAM  WAGE POSITION– 2nd posting
The Virginia Tech Competitive Cheer Club Team is comprised of 25-30 student-athletes. We practice 2-3 nights/week at a gym in Radford, and compete each spring at NCA College Nationals in Daytona, Florida, in addition to other competitions in the region. We are strictly a competition team, we do not perform at any VT athletic events. We are seeking an Assistant Coach who has experience in cheer spotting and tumbling. A basic knowledge of cheerleading is helpful but not required. The Assistant Coach will assist our Head Coach in all aspects of leading/coaching the team. This can include composing practice plans, leading practices and/or conditioning and traveling with the team to competitions and showcases. 29. SIGMA XI GRANT IN AID OF RESEARCH (GIAR) – DEADLINE: October 1, 2023
Since 1922, the Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program has provided undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences. By encouraging close working relationships between students and mentors, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning. Sigma Xi Members: Award amounts for members range from $500 to $5,000 for graduate applicants and $500 to $2,000 for undergraduate applicants. The 3D Interaction (3DI) group is inviting you to participate in a research study with virtual reality (VR) technologies. Our team is investigating the effectiveness of different 3D manipulation techniques in virtual reality. The study will make use of state-of-the-art VR technologies such as the Meta Quest 2 VR headset. Participants in the study will come to the Gilbert Place, Room 3215, 220 Gilbert Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060. Participants will try out several 3D manipulation techniques while standing or moving around in an indoor area, and will be surveyed about these techniques. The entire experimental session will take at most 60 minutes. The participation is entirely voluntary. 33. PARTICIPANTS NEEDS FOR A STUDY ON TURMERIC SUPPLEMENTATION – 2nd posting
Participants are needed for a study evaluating the effects of 4 weeks of oral Turmeric supplementation on markers of oxidative stress and inflammation (IRB 22-646). This study comprises of two visits, separated by 4 weeks of oral Turmeric supplementation provided by the research team. Participants will undergo a graded exercise test (VO2max test) on a treadmill, while being connected to a metabolic cart. A blood sample will be drawn via venipuncture before and after the treadmill test. Study measurements will include blood pressure, body composition, bone mineral density, VO2max, and anthropometry. Eligible participants must be woman and men in good general health between the ages of 18-45, non-smoker, free from chronic diseases and are physically active for 2 or more days per week. The purpose of this study is to gain insight into the user experiences of operating lactation spaces available to lactating people who do not have full time employment or private offices on university campuses. Our team is investigating the effect of various levels of system assistance on the overall quality of shared whiteboard collaboration using augmented reality. The study will make use of state-of-the-art VR technologies such as the Meta Quest 2 VR headset. Participants will work with another participant to initialize a collaboration session with varying levels of assistance from the system. Participants will then work together to group datasets on their shared whiteboard. After the study, participants will be surveyed about their collaboration experience. Participants are needed for a study evaluating the effects of jumping exercises on bone health in female runners (IRB 22-168). As part of this study, you will be asked to consume a reduced-calorie diet that will be provided by the research team and participate in two phases of supervised treadmill runs and jumping exercises on 5 consecutive days. Study measurements will include blood draw, body composition, bone density, VO2max, and exercise efficiency. Eligible participants must be a woman in good general health between the ages of 18-35, non-smoker, regular menstrual cycle, not on hormonal birth control, can run at least 60-90 minutes per day for 5 consecutive days, not taking any medications that could affect study results, and not pregnant or lactating. 39. GRANATA BIOMECHANICS LAB RECRUITING FOR RESEARCH STUDY UNDERSTANDING BIOMECHANICAL PERFORMANCE DURING CHILD CARE RELATED ACTIVITIES – 3rd posting
The Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting women who have given birth in the last 6 – 12 months (postpartum) and women who have never been pregnant, for a biomechanical performance study on effects of lifting and loading a portable car seat in women 6 to 12 months postpartum, compared to women having never been pregnant (protocol number 22-1085). Study involves a single 2 hour visit with questionnaires, six clinical assessments, and lifting and loading conditions, of a 33 lb. portable car seat, as your movements are tracked. Participants must be 18 – 35 years old, not be currently pregnant, not been diagnosed with; a postural stability condition that affects balance, a neurologic disorder, not sustained an injury in the last two months that limited physical activity for more than two days, have not had a serious leg injury/surgery, and can perform tasks of loading and lifting. Eligible participants need to have given birth in the last 6 months to 1 year, had a vaginal delivery, and have not experienced a grade 4 perineal tear. 40. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A SHARED BOOK READING EXPERIENCE RESEARCH STUDY – 3rd posting
The Echo Lab invites children aged 3 to 6, and their parents, to participate in a research study (IRB# 23-748) focused on shared book reading. Children will collaboratively read a storybook with their parents using the innovative TaleMate platform, an AI-driven system designed to enhance the reading experience. This research consists of two 30 minute Zoom sessions where both parents and children will read a book and answer subsequent questions. Additionally, parents will be asked to complete a 15-minute online survey that delves into their child’s background, media consumption, and reading habits. Overall, participants can expect a total time commitment ranging from 75 to 90 minutes, which includes the online survey (15-20 minutes) and both Zoom sessions (30-35 minutes each).To qualify for the study, both the child and their parent should be English speakers (native and non-native).  Those who have already taken part in this study are not eligible to participate again.
