9. SIMPLE LINEAR REGRESSION IN R

Simple Linear Regression is one of the most commonly used statistical methods – but this means it is often misused and misinterpreted. In the SAIG Short Course Simple Linear Regression in R, we will cover the how to perform and interpret simple linear regression. The following topics will be covered: running SLR in R, checking SLR assumptions with plots and tests ,interpreting SLR models and coefficients, and alternatives if your data don’t meet the usual assumptions. The Graduate School is offering training sessions to graduate students and faculty on how to use iThenticate, a newly available software system to review the originality of documents, ensure accurate attribution to other authors, and eliminate occurrences of potential plagiarism. Free childcare for graduate student families at the VT Women’s Center, 6:30-8:00 on Thursday evenings when classes are in session. Advance sign-up is required, and there are limited spaces. 21. COMMUNITY CHANGE JOURNAL SEEKING SUBMISSIONS – 1st posting
Community Change’s fifth issue seeks submissions in the forms of scholarly refereed articles, book reviews, essays, and other work, including multimedia and artwork from graduate students. Community Change is an online, peer-reviewed, graduate student journal that explores multiple approaches to democratic community development and change. This interdisciplinary journal examines the practices, processes, and individual and collective struggles that produce social and political change at all levels of society. Community Change adopts a broad definition of community development that includes issues relating to public policy, democratization, collective action, physical/digital and social infrastructure developments, agency, and efficacy. 22. FOOD SECURITY SUPPORT FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS – 1st posting
The Market of Virginia Tech is excited to announce our new Open Market Hours initiative. From October 25 through December 13, we will open our non-perishable pantry to any Virginia Tech student in need of food assistance. We are located at 801 University City Blvd. Next to the Himalayan Curry Cafe. Open Market hours will be during the following times: Wednesday: 1-5pm, Thursday: 5-7:30pm, Friday: 10am-1:30pm. 23. CAP AND GOWN LOAN PROGRAM NOW OPEN FOR DECEMBER COMMENCEMENT – 1st posting

The Dr. Rich Cap and Gown loan program is now accepting applications! Please visit https://forms.gle/yrEtRNzNqdYf4DQTA  to apply for a cap and gown loan before 11/17. All students who receive a gown are required to have it dry cleaned prior to returning it to GPSS. Doctoral hoods and tassels are not available for loan. Filling out an application does not guarantee receiving a cap and gown as sizes are limited, so loans will be granted on a first come, first served bases. 26. WINTER SESSION COURSE – 2nd posting
EDHE 5984: ADDRESSING CRITICAL PROBLEMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION.  This asynchronous Winter Session course will explore contemporary issues in higher education with application for all educators (teachers and counselors) working in P-12 and higher education, staff, and administrators. The course will engage in discussions educator’s various roles and responsibilities in their contributions to shaping the future of higher education. Take your research to the next level! GRAD 5124 (Research Skills for Graduate Students) is a one-credit, fully-online, asynchronous course offered by the University Libraries in spring 2024. Students will develop skills that will prepare them for research in graduate school and beyond and have the option to take the class either for credit or as pass/fail. The Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) Policy Fellowship is a science policy fellowship for Virginia that is hosted by the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (VASEM). COVES fellows are graduate students or postdoctoral researchers in science, technology, engineering, math and health (STEM-H) fields at Virginian Universities who spend 12 weeks over the summer working with Host Offices in the Virginia legislative and executive branches or in the policy offices of NGOs and scientific industries in Virginia. In addition to their work in their Host Offices, fellows are paired with a science policy mentor from VASEM, trained through an orientation at the start of their fellowship, and participate in networking and career development activities throughout the fellowship. Participants will wear a Microsoft HoloLens 2 AR device to experience and provide feedback on AR user interfaces. We are doing a research study evaluating intentional weight gain strategies in athletic individuals. Our research aim is to investigate the dietary intakes and nutrition-related behaviors of athletes aiming to gain body weight. The VT Sensory Evaluation Lab (SEL) is researching the individual’s ability of home meal preparation (IRB #23-861). We are recruiting volunteers who are 18 years or older who are interested in sharing their personal experience in home meal preparation to participate. Are you interested in learning more about your energy needs and helping researchers better measure food intake in participants of varying body sizes? Participants are needed for the MEASURE study (IRB #22-654) seeking to understand how a participant’s weight class can affect measurements of dietary intake. Participants will complete measurements of height, weight, body composition, energy expenditure, and food intake over a period of 5-7 weeks with a total of 5 visits to campus. To be eligible, you must be over 18, have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2, weigh under 600 lbs., and not be following a weight control diet. 43. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY ON TURMERIC SUPPLEMENTATION – 3rd posting
Participants are needed for a study evaluating the effects of 4 weeks of oral Turmeric supplementation on markers of oxidative stress and inflammation (IRB 22-646). This study comprises of two visits, separated by 4 weeks of oral Turmeric supplementation provided by the research team. Participants will undergo a graded exercise test (VO2max test) on a treadmill, while being connected to a metabolic cart. A blood sample will be drawn via venipuncture before and after the treadmill test. Study measurements will include blood pressure, body composition, bone mineral density, VO2max, and anthropometry. Eligible participants must be woman and men in good general health between the ages of 18-45, non-smoker, free from chronic diseases and are physically active for 2 or more days per week.
