Did you miss the original deadline for submitting an abstract to the 40th GPSS Graduate Research Symposium? No worries! We have extended our deadline to Monday March 4, 2024 at 11:59 PM! Hopefully this will help anyone who wanted to submit an abstract but got busy with mid-semester assignments, exams, grading, and assistantship responsibilities. The Graduate Residential Fellow (GRF) will be responsible for:
Fostering connections between students and Residential College (RC) faculty;Supporting -Residential Well-being Student Leaders, Apartment Fellows, Council(s) and others in building community
-Serving as a positive, engaged role model for students in the community;

8. WAGE – LATEX AND ACCESSIBILITY SPECIALIST – 2nd posting
Wage position ($20.03/hour) The Open Education Initiative at the University Libraries seeks a part-time wage employee to create accessible HTML and ePub documents from existing LaTeX documents using a pre-existing TeX4ht process. Documentation, quality-checks, and training non-technical people are also part of this role. This position directly relates to making free learning resources (Open Education Resources) produced by the University Libraries’ more accessible to blind and low-vision readers. 9. SIGMA XI GRANTS IN AID OF RESEARCH – DEADLINE: MARCH 15, 2024
Since 1922, the Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program has provided undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences. By encouraging close working relationships between students and mentors, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning. Sigma Xi Members: Award amounts for members range from $500 to $5,000 for graduate applicants and $500 to $2,000 for undergraduate applicants. Non-members: Award amounts for non-members, both graduate and undergraduate, are available up to $1,000. Both members and non-members are eligible for designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences that allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. 10. PEACOCK-HARPER CULINARY HISTORY SCHOLARSHIPS – DEADLINE: APRIL 1, 2024
Virginia Tech graduate students are encouraged to apply for two awards of $1500 (or one $3000 award if only one qualified applicant is selected). Application is open through April 1, 2024, and funds will be transferred on May 16, 2024. Preference is given to applicants whose scholarly pursuits encompass topics related to material in the Peacock-Harper Culinary History Collection in the University Library’s Special Collections section. 11. NIJ GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: APRIL 10, 2024 (grants.gov) and APRIL 17, 2024 (Just Grants)
The National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) program supports doctoral research with relevance to criminal or juvenile justice in the United States. This includes criminology, forensic science, technology for law enforcement, and more. Applications from all science and engineering fields are welcome. The fellowship provides up to three years of support within a five-year period and includes : $41,000/year student salary, $16,000/year cost of education allowance, $3,000/year research expenses. 12. SUMMER CUNNINGHAM FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE – DEADLINE: MAY 1, 2024
In combination with the Cunningham Doctoral Scholarship and the Graduate School Annual Fund, we are delighted to announce the availability of summer fellowships in the amount of $7,500 each. This supplement will be awarded as a lump sum fellowship (see note below) at the beginning of the summer. This is a one-time award, cannot be renewed, and is awarded without the expectation of any additional work on your part. Awardees must be current Ph.D. students who are working on their dissertations during the summer months. This award cannot be combined with other Virginia Tech funding sources. Priority will be given to those toward the end of their program. Financial need will be considered as a secondary factor. Applications will be accepted until May 1. Awards will be announced soon thereafter.
NOTE: Fellowships are not considered employment. No taxes are withheld and you will not receive a W2 form at the end of the year. Fellowships will show on your 1098-T from the university and may have to be reported to the IRS on your 1040 form. However, different tax rules apply to international students. For them, the university is required to collect taxes on the fellowship and to report those amounts at year-end to the IRS on form 1042S. 13. DOE OFFICE OF SCIENCE GRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS – DEADLINE: MAY 1 2024, 5PM EST
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is accepting applications for the 2024 solicitation 1 cycle for its Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program.  Applications are due on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. ET. The award program is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their graduate research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE’s Office of Science. https://graduateschool.vt.edu/funding/scholarships-and-fellowships/dept-of-energy-office-of-science-research-grant.html The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory or facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist. 15. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A ROBOT ESCAPE ROOM STUDY – 1st posting
The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study investigating the effects of different emotions on human trust in social robots in an escape room situation. During the study, you will be asked to complete an emotion induction writing task and solve puzzles with a humanoid robot agent in an escape room. You will also need to fill out different questionnaires three times (before and after the emotion induction task & after successfully escaping the room.) The study will take approximately an hour. Want to know how your food choices can be healthy for you and the planet? This study (IRB 23-147) is seeking undergraduate and graduate VT students to participate in two-part focus groups to share your views about what motivates your dietary choices, graphic food-based dietary guidelines and sustainable diets. The Virginia Tech Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics is conducting a research study investigating how we feel objects with which we interact. Participants must be 18-23 years of age, right hand dominant, not pregnant, no diagnosis of diabetes, and no major injury or pain in either arm. Compensation $20.00 an hour. Graduate student conducting research on the Latino community to contribute to the limited literature available in academia. To participate in the survey, you must identify as Latino. Your participation in this survey would be valuable in helping fill the existing research gaps. 20. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR MIXED REALITY COLLABORATION – 2nd posting
The 3D Interaction (3DI) group is inviting you to participate in a research study with virtual reality (VR) technologies. Our team is investigating the dynamic between users who are collaborating across different physical locations using immersive technologies, namely in hybrid scenarios. Specifically, we will explore the communication boundary between users co-located and remote while wearing the Meta Quest devices. The study requires four participants for each session who already know each other. If you are interested, please reach out to iatahmid@vt.edu with the names of three of your collaborators. Once approved, four of you will be asked to come to the 3rd floor of Gilbert Place and perform a collaborative task using either augmented reality or virtual reality. Participants will be surveyed about interactions tested during the study. The entire experimental session will take about 90 minutes. Upon completion of the study, you will be compensated for your time with class credit (in participating classes), or a $15 Amazon.com gift card (each).

21. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR IN-VEHICLE AGENT ACCENT STUDY – 2nd posting
The study aims to investigate the impact of in-vehicle agent accent on driving behavior and driver’s perception. You will complete three different driving task using motion-based driving simulator, and need to fill out some questionnaires after each driving. Researchers from the Mind Music Machine lab (Dr. Myounghoon Jeon) are conducting research on motion sickness using a driving simulator. The experiment is divided into four sessions of up to 30 minutes each; it will take up to 1.5 hours in total. Please note, participation is completely voluntary. The InfoVis Lab is inviting you to participate in a research study regarding dimension reduction algorithms. Our team is investigating the gradient-based explanation of dimension reduction algorithms. Participants in the study will come to the Data and Decision Sciences (D&DS) Building, Room 466, 727 Prices Fork Rd, Blacksburg, VA 24060. Participants will try to answer several questions regarding the explanation of dimension reduction algorithms with two different systems. The entire experimental session will take about 30 minutes. The participation is entirely voluntary. Participants will be given a $10 Amazon gift card for full participation. Participants need to be English speakers, at least 18 years old, with a computer science or data science background, and have normal vision (contact lenses and glasses are fine).
