1. GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CITATION MANAGER
Monday, September 30, 2:30-3:30pm, Zoom
Citation managers like EndNote, Mendeley, and Zotero are powerful tools that can help you save, organize, and cite your references. Their use can also help improve your workflow and make the research process easier and less stressful. This session will focus on ways to get the most out of your citation manager. By the end of the session, you’ll be able to integrate citation managers into your existing workflow, identify personal best practices for using citation managers, and use advanced features of the citation manager of your choice to streamline your research workflow. 2. DATA WRANGLING AND VISUALIZATION WITH R
Tuesday, October 1, 5-8pm, Online & Wednesday, October 30, 9-12pm Online
This hands-on workshop is designed for those with basic R programming experience. It will focus on data wrangling and visualization using the tidyverse set of packages. The workshop is open to anyone, but learners should be familiar with programming in R equivalent to the Intro to R and RStudio workshop. You will need access to a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer. This intermediate workshop is offered twice in Fall 2024 on 1 October, 5pm–8pm, and 30 October, 9am–12pm. If you do not have prior experience working in R and RStudio, an introductory workshop to R and RStudio is scheduled for 24 September, 5pm–8pm, and 23 October, 9am–12pm. You can take the workshops as a series or choose which one best fits your experience and needs. Please only register for one session of each workshop.

3. WHY ARE LATINOS AND FILIPINOS PRIMOS?

In this collaborative event between El Centro and the APIDA + Center, learn how Latinos and Filipinos are primos (cousins). Hear from faculty/staff and students about their experiences and find commonality between these two populations. This event celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and the intersectional nature of the Latinx and APIDA communities. All are welcome and light refreshments will be served.

4. FREE ‘WOMEN IN POLITICS’ PANEL DISCUSSION

The School of Performing Arts is hosting a “Women in Politics” panel discussion prior to opening night of the mainstage production, POTUS. Held at Theatre 101 (200 College Ave., Blacksburg, VA 24061) from 6-7pm on Tuesday, Oct. 1, the nonpartisan panel discussion will feature local female leaders. Those slated for conversation are Leslie Hager-Smith, Mayor of Blacksburg; Lauren Colliver, Town of Blacksburg Council Member; Tanya Hockett, Town of Christiansburg Council Member; and, Mary Biggs, Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors. Dr. Farida Jalalzai, Associate Dean for Global Initiatives and Engagement, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and Professor of Political Science, will serve as the moderator. 5. PROGRAMMING WITH PYTHON

6. THE FIRST ASIANS IN THE AMERICAS WITH DR. DIEGO JAVIER LUIS
Wednesday, October 2, 5:30-6:30pm, El Centro (Squies 309)
From 1565 to 1815, Manila galleons ships brought thousands of free and enslaved Asians to Acapulco, where they were labeled “chinos” (Chinese) in Mexico. This marked the start of a long history of racialization that grouped diverse Asian peoples into essentializing categories. Many “chinos” navigated their minoritized status to forge new intra-Asian, Afro-Asian, and Asian-Indigenous identities defining their colonial experience. This talk explores the earliest histories of Asians in the Americas and highlights the importance of their stories in today’s political and cultural context. Dr. Diego Javier Luis, author of The First Asians in the Americas: A Transpacific History, is the Rohrbaugh Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University. The Graduate School invites submissions of art work and photography by graduate students for the beautification of the building during the fall semester and beyond. Scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and natural and computational sciences will gather to present their work, collect feedback, and connect with peers from different fields. Consider submitting an abstract for a talk or poster presentation by the November 4, 2024, deadline. 25. GRADUATE SCHOOL SEEKING GRADUATE STUDENT TOUR GUIDES – 3rd posting
The Graduate School is seeking graduate students to serve as tour guides to prospective graduate students for the 2024-25 academic year. Applicants must have good communication skills, an eagerness to share VT with others, familiarity with campus location, and be willing to conduct 2-5 tours a semester. Tours are typically 1 hour. Applicants must also have a current valid driver’s license, though walking tours will also be offered. Tour guides will be provided with training and will receive a small stipend at the end of the year. The Graduate School is seeking to fill a graduate student wage position to support a web development project under the supervision of our Senior Software Developer. Qualifications required include being currently enrolled as a graduate student at VT, web development language experience (PHP, HTML, CSS, Javascript, MySQL, or similar), Version control (GIT) experience, code problem-solving and debugging experience, work experience on a team-based project, and attention to detail. Virginia Tech is partnering with the Virginia Community College System to offer VT graduate students an opportunity to teach as adjuncts in the Spring 2025 semester. These paid internships are available to any domestic or international student with at least 18 graduate credit hours in their discipline. Each student will be paired with an experienced mentor for the duration of the semester. Teaching modalities will be in-person or synchronous online, and three separate CC locations will be part of the pilot program. Students will gain experience as “Faculty of Record,” which will enhance a CV/Resume for anyone wishing to pursue an academic career. Participate in our study, “Modeling Trust Between Human and Autonomous Systems in Search and Rescue Scenarios.” We’re exploring how an AI assistant can help in search and rescue missions within a Minecraft simulation. You’ll use either your intuition with a map or guidance from an AI assistant to locate targets. The study lasts 25-30 minutes, including a 5-minute demo and a 20-minute simulation. You can participate in person or remotely.
