8. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: ACADEMIC PUBLISHING & ONLINE PROFILES

In this workshop, participants will discover online platforms, tools, and databases to refine their selections for publishing venues as well as how to best evaluate journals, books, and publishers for publication. In addition, participants will be able to distinguish between different academic profile systems and demonstrate the value and advantages of each, so that they can develop a more robust professional and academic presence. Participants will also be able to connect their profiles together for ease of data entry. The Graduate Honor System relies on trained graduate students and faculty to hear academic integrity violation cases. It takes a one-hour training to become a panelist, and after that faculty and graduate students can serve on preliminary review and review panels. All graduate students are invited to become panelists to help hear cases and actively contribute to the ongoing conversation about standards of academic integrity. The Graduate School invites submissions of art work and photography by graduate students for the beautification of the building during the fall semester and beyond. 21. WILLIAM & MARY GRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM – DEADLINE TO SUBMIT ABSTRACT 11/4/2024 – 3rd posting
Join fellow graduate students from across the country to showcase your research at William & Mary’s Graduate Research Symposium, scheduled for February 27-28, 2025 in Williamsburg. Scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and natural and computational sciences will gather to present their work, collect feedback, and connect with peers from different fields. Consider submitting an abstract for a talk or poster presentation by the November 4, 2024, deadline. If your abstract is accepted, you’ll also have the chance to submit a paper to compete for awards recognizing excellence in research in the Visiting Scholars category. 22. VT/VCCS TEACHING FELLOWS PILOT PROGRAM
Virginia Tech is partnering with the Virginia Community College System to offer VT graduate students an opportunity to teach as adjuncts in the Spring 2025 semester. These paid internships are available to any domestic or international student with at least 18 graduate credit hours in their discipline. Each student will be paired with an experienced mentor for the duration of the semester. Teaching modalities will be in-person or synchronous online, and three separate CC locations will be part of the pilot program. Students will gain experience as “Faculty of Record,” which will enhance a CV/Resume for anyone wishing to pursue an academic career. However, academic career aspirations are not mandatory and any Master’s or Doctoral student is welcome! 23. P.E.O SCHOLAR AWARDS $25,000 – DEADLINE: OCTOBER 15, 2024
P.E.O. Scholar Awards are one-time, competitive, merit-based awards for women of the US and Canada who are either pursuing a doctoral level degree or are engaged in postdoctoral research at an accredited college, university or institution. Priority is given to women who are well established in their programs, study or research. A woman is eligible for nomination by a local chapter (3 in Blacksburg) if she is: a citizen of the US OR Canada at the time of her nomination; at the time the award is made, August 1, is within 2 years of her graduation date and has at least one full academic year of work remaining to complete her doctoral level degree or postdoctoral research; is enrolled full-time in her program at an accredited college, university or institution demonstrates academic excellence and seriousness of +purpose. The P.E.O. Scholar Awards OF $25,000 are given once each year for the ensuing academic year. 24. 2025 MARSHALL SHERFIELD FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 1, 2024
The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission will offer one Marshall Sherfield Fellowship for post-doctoral research in any area of science and engineering. First awarded in 1998 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan and funded by the Marshall Sherfield Fellowship Foundation, the aim of the Marshall Sherfield Fellowships is to introduce American scientists and engineers to the cutting edge of UK science and engineering. It is intended to build long-term contacts and international links between the United Kingdom and the United States in key scientific areas. The wider objectives are similar to those of the Marshall Scholarships programme: To enable intellectually distinguished young Americans, their country’s future leaders, to study in the UK; To help fellows gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain; To contribute to the advancement of knowledge in science and technology at Britain’s centres of academic excellence; To motivate fellows to act as ambassadors from the USA to the UK and vice versa throughout their lives thus strengthening British American understanding; To promote the personal and academic fulfilment of each fellow. Attention graduate researchers! Do you want to share your work with the world? Register for the Nutshell Games, the fun and fast-paced presentation competition hosted by the Center for Communicating Science. After finishing their 90-second talks about their research “in a nutshell,” contenders will be ranked by a panel of campus and community judges. Each participant receives a professionally recorded video of their presentation. Five winners’ home departments will receive $500 for the winner’s use in program-sanctioned research costs or conference participation. Several agricultural interventions that aim to empower women smallholder farmers in Africa are often top-down and disconnected from the local experiences and expectations of empowerment. This makes it difficult for well-intentioned programs to achieve the desired empowerment outcomes for women.
