1. NEW RIVER SYMPOSIUM – 1st posting
2024 Symposium Theme:“Rivers³: Reconnect, Restore, Recreate”. Organized and presented by the New River Conservancy and a diverse array of partners, the biennial New River Symposium celebrates the ecological, economic, and cultural values of the New River, brings together the region’s diverse constituents, and provides a forum for partnership, research, and policy development. We invite you to join the roster of prestigious presenters for this event. The 2024 Symposium will be held April 11th and 12th on the Radford University campus. We invite abstracts for presentations (15-20 minutes) or posters for the poster session. Deadline for proposal submissions is February 16, 2024. Speakers will be announced by March 7, 2024
2. CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SPRING SEMESTER WORKSHOPS & DROP-IN HOURS
Career and Professional Development drop-in advising hours in GLC 120 will be held on Wednesdays from 1-4pm beginning January 10. The Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society recognizes outstanding scholarly achievement and promotes diversity and excellence in doctoral education and the professoriate. The Bouchet Society seeks to develop a network of preeminent scholars who serve as examples of the five pillars: scholarship, leadership, character, service, and advocacy for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the academy. 6. ACCESSIBILITY PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION GRANT PROGRAM CALL FOR APPLICATIONS – 3rd posting
Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS) is accepting applications for the Accessibility Professional Certification Grant Program. Grant recipients gain the opportunity to develop expertise and earn the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) certification. Faculty, staff, and graduate students who want to develop cross-disciplinary knowledge of disabilities, accessibility, universal design, and the associated standards are encouraged to apply. 7. RURAL ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH T32 PROGRAM – 2nd posting
Calling all PhD students passionate about environmental health in rural settings! Rural Environmental Health T32 participants will receive assistantship and tuition support for their first two years of the program. The REH T32 Program will admit two students Fall ’24, and applications are open to both incoming first-year PhD students (Fall ’24) and current PhD students. This competitive program offers specialized training in environmental health sciences, emphasizing applications in rural settings. Trainees will complete unique rural environmental health training, in addition to enrolling in the Interface of Global Change IGEP. 9. 2024 NMFS-SEA GRANT FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: JANUARY 25, 2024 BEFORE 5PM EST
Population and Ecosystem Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics
The National Sea Grant College Program (Sea Grant) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) support a Ph.D. graduate fellowship in two specific areas.
Population and Ecosystem Dynamics: Sea Grant anticipates funding at least four new Ph.D. fellowships in 2024 to students who are interested in careers related to marine ecosystem and population dynamics, with a focus on modeling and managing systems of living marine resources.
Marine Resource Economics: Sea Grant anticipates funding one new Ph.D. fellowship in 2024 to students who are interested in careers related to the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing the economics of the conservation and management of living marine resources.

10. VIRGINIA SPACE GRANT CONSORTIUM GRADUATE RESEARCH STEM FELLOWSHIPS – DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 9, 2024.
The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) is accepting applications for its Graduate Research STEM Fellowship program. A major goal of VSGC is to help produce the engineers and scientists of the future and to promote diversity in the STEM workforce. The consortium provides fellowships of $6,000 in add-on support to graduate students to supplement and enhance basic research support. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, be enrolled full-time in a program of study in STEM, have a specific faculty-mentored research project that has NASA or aerospace relevance, and are not graduating sooner than May 2025. 11. 2025 KNAUSS MARINE POLICY FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 15, 2024 BEFORE 5PM EST
The 2025 John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship is sponsored by NOAA’s National Sea Grant College Program (NSGCP). Applicants must have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources Fellows are matched with hosts in the legislative and executive branches of government located in the Washington, D.C. area. All eligible applicants enrolled at a Virginia institution planning to apply are strongly encouraged to contact Virginia Sea Grant prior to submitting an application. . FUNDING: $93,900 in federal funding, includes $71,400 stipend, $5,000 for allowable expenses, $2,500 for placement process travel, and up to $15,000 for host office-related travel. 12. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON STRESS AND COGNITION
Do you help care for an older adult in your life? If so, you may qualify for the Caregiver Stress and Cognition Study (IRB # 23-789). What it entails: a single screening phone call & a 60-90 minute in-person session (at-home and in-lab locations offered). Participants will be asked to answer surveys, undergo a brief 10-minute interview about their responses, and complete a computerized cognitive task while undergoing physiological measurements (i.e., blood pressure, pulse, and fNIRS readings. fNIRS is a lightweight, non-invasive device that is worn like a headband; both blood pressure and pulse recordings are measured by devices placed on the bicep and forearm of participants.). Participant must be currently caregiving for an older adult (65 years+) in some capacity (i.e., helping with physical, mental, or emotional needs). Participant must not be currently diagnosed with a major cardiovascular or cognitive condition (Hypertension/High Blood Pressure is accepted). 14. MENTORING UNDERGRADUATE WORKSHOPS
Thursday, January 11, 8:30am-12:30am, 2124 Gilbert Place
This workshop will engage participants through interactive sessions on recognizing their mentoring approach, exploring what a mentor is and is not, what a mentor does, and guidelines and best practices for mentoring undergraduate students in research. The principles presented will be applicable broadly to all areas of research. Participants will be required to prepare for the workshop by reading introductory documents and case studies to be posted on a dedicated Canvas site; preparation time should not exceed two hours. This workshop is open to faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. Participants are eligible to receive PDN credit. Program capacity is 50, accepted on a first come, first served basis.
