Virginia Tech has announced the 2024 commencement schedule, which includes significant changes that will affect graduate students. 9. PARTICIPANTS INVITED TO JOIN THE CONNECTION PROJECT GROUP – 1st posting
Are you looking for a new way to get involved at VT next semester?  The Connection Project (TCP) is a great way to build connections here at Tech and create your community here!  In your TCP group, you can come to the group as you are, learn more about yourself, and better understand others and you don’t have to do anything outside of group times! Led by 2 graduate students, your TCP group will have 6-10 students and meet once a week.  You’ll engage with a variety of topics like conflict, trust, and supporting others with a diverse group. 11. CIRTL AT VIRGINIA TECH ASSOCIATE TEACHING PROGRAM – 1st posting
The CIRTL at Virginia Tech Associate Teaching Program is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral associates to connect and associate with effective teaching practices. Participants will engage in programming focused on foundational knowledge about teaching and complete a teaching philosophy activity to start building their teaching portfolios. Upon program completion, participants will receive a digital badge recognizing their achievement of program requirements. The program is open to graduate students and postdoctoral associates regardless of teaching experience or responsibilities. Multiple options for program completion are available. To be eligible for the program, you must be a current graduate student or postdoctoral associate at Virginia Tech. 17. NEW RIVER SYMPOSIUM – 3rd posting
2024 Symposium Theme:“Rivers³: Reconnect, Restore, Recreate”. Organized and presented by the New River Conservancy and a diverse array of partners, the biennial New River Symposium celebrates the ecological, economic, and cultural values of the New River, brings together the region’s diverse constituents, and provides a forum for partnership, research, and policy development. 19. CAMPUS PEACE CORPS RECRUITER – 2nd posting
Virginia Tech’s Center for International Research, Education, and Development is seeking a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer to serve as the part-time Campus Peace Corps Recruiter (20 hours/week). The recruiter will be the main point of contact for Virginia Tech students interested in joining the Peace Corps. Among the tasks are holding regular office hours, holding information sessions, and assisting students applying to Peace Corps.  MUST be a former Peace Corps Volunteer, no exceptions. The position is open until filled. The job will run through Spring Semester, 2024 with the possibility of continuation. Compensation is tuition remission and a GA stipend. 21. SUMMER GA POSITION FOR SCIENCE OUTREACH – 2nd posting
The GA will work closely with the AD for Outreach to administer programs held during June and July of 2024. The programs include five residential camps for middle and high school students and one workshop for high school science teachers. Duties include: training to work with youth, helping to recruit, select, write workflows and  train camp counselors, Reserving classrooms and operating technology, serving as backup/extra camp counselor, helping deal with emergencies if they occur, e.g., a sick camper, helping with logistics of activities across campus, including taking supplies to/from different buildings, troubleshooting after each program to make improvements. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher, strong experience working with youth, strong verbal communication, professional, responsible, organized, attention to detail, ability to think through potential problems ahead of time and plan accordingly, ability to prioritize tasks and successfully manage multiple assignments, valid driver’s license and safe driving record, willing to drive self and campers as needed, able to pass background checks.  Position will run May 10-August 9. 22. 2024 NMFS-SEA GRANT FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: JANUARY 25, 2024 BEFORE 5PM EST
Population and Ecosystem Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics
The National Sea Grant College Program (Sea Grant) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) support a Ph.D. graduate fellowship in two specific areas.
Population and Ecosystem Dynamics: Sea Grant anticipates funding at least four new Ph.D. fellowships in 2024 to students who are interested in careers related to marine ecosystem and population dynamics, with a focus on modeling and managing systems of living marine resources. 
Marine Resource Economics: Sea Grant anticipates funding one new Ph.D. fellowship in 2024 to students who are interested in careers related to the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing the economics of the conservation and management of living marine resources.

23. VIRGINIA SPACE GRANT CONSORTIUM GRADUATE RESEARCH STEM FELLOWSHIPS – DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 9, 2024.
The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) is accepting applications for its Graduate Research STEM Fellowship program. A major goal of VSGC is to help produce the engineers and scientists of the future and to promote diversity in the STEM workforce. The consortium provides fellowships of $6,000 in add-on support to graduate students to supplement and enhance basic research support. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, be enrolled full-time in a program of study in STEM, have a specific faculty-mentored research project that has NASA or aerospace relevance, and are not graduating sooner than May 2025. 24. 2025 KNAUSS MARINE POLICY FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 15, 2024 BEFORE 5PM EST
The 2025 John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship is sponsored by NOAA’s National Sea Grant College Program (NSGCP). Applicants must have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources Fellows are matched with hosts in the legislative and executive branches of government located in the Washington, D.C. area. All eligible applicants enrolled at a Virginia institution planning to apply are strongly encouraged to contact Virginia Sea Grant prior to submitting an application.  . 26. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR VIRTUAL REALITY BIKE SIMULATION RESEARCH STUDY – 1st posting
I am recruiting eligible individuals to participate in a Virginia Tech research study (IRB #23-643) assessing bicyclist behavior. Participants will ride a virtual reality stationary bicycle simulation. This study would involve coming to the lab space in Kelly Hall for a single 1-hour session. To be eligible for this study you must be over the age of 18, not have a history of epilepsy, not have any medical problems that can be aggravated by physical activity such as cycling, and have no past problems with motion/VR sickness. The Mind Music and Machine Lab at Virginia Tech invites participants for a study (IRB# 23-1154) to assess the emotional impact of eight six-minute music pieces. Interested in sustainability, reducing food waste, and food security efforts? Campus Kitchen is recruiting student leaders for our Spring 2024 cohort of diversion volunteers! Campus Kitchen is a volunteer organization that works to divert unserved food from campus dining facilities to local food access organizations. We are currently seeking volunteers to join us for the semester. Each volunteer is asked to commit to a once weekly shift for the entirety of the semester. 29. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON PROCESSED FOOD – 1st posting
The major purpose of this research project is to learn if consuming processed or less processed foods has an impact on how a person’s brain responds to processed foods. Briefly, the full study is 10-12 weeks long with two 14-day periods of controlled feeding where we will provide ALL foods and beverages for you to eat during those times. If you choose to participate, the study will consist of approximately 34 visits and require approximately 33-35 hours of your time. Most of these visits take place in Blacksburg with some taking place on the Roanoke campus. Participants must be 18-25 years of age. 30. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR STUDY ON STRESS AND COGNITION – 1st posting
Do you help care for an older adult in your life? If so, you may qualify for the Caregiver Stress and Cognition Study (IRB # 23-789). What it entails: a single screening phone call & a 60-90 minute in-person session (at-home and in-lab locations offered). Participants will be asked to answer surveys, undergo a brief 10-minute interview about their responses, and complete a computerized cognitive task while undergoing physiological measurements (i.e., blood pressure, pulse, and fNIRS readings. fNIRS is a lightweight, non-invasive device that is worn like a headband; both blood pressure and pulse recordings are measured by devices placed on the bicep and forearm of participants.). This is an aerial circus workshop and demonstration with a hands-on portion. Studies suggest aerial circus classes and studios are a safe haven for queer, neurodivergent, and/or bigger bodied people.
