Join us for a tour of the historic Lyric Theater on College Avenue in downtown Blacksburg. 22. UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES’ LONG-TERM TECHNOLOGY LENDING AVAILABLE FOR FALL 2024 – 1st posting
The University Libraries’ long-term technology loans are now open for fall 2024! Application deadline is Sept. 5. The Studios Technology Lending Desk has equipment available for semester-long special research, teaching, and personal projects. Requesters will fill out the form for equipment, and if there are more requests than equipment available, the decision for who will receive the equipment will be made via weighted random lottery. Research or teaching projects and projects involving a library or TLOS partnership carry more weight. For priority consideration and inclusion in the lottery, requests should be submitted by Sept. 5, 2024. Others will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Equipment pickup will begin the third week of the semester and must be returned within a week of the semester’s end. 35. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH STUDY ON SLEEP AND BRAIN-MACHINE INTERFACE LEARNING – 1st posting
This Virginia Tech study (VT IRB # 17-860) aims to uncover what events occur in the brain during sleep that help facilitate the learning of a new task. To meet this goal, we utilize a number of physiological recordings in the lab, such as EEG, EMG, and EOG recordings. The Brain-machine interface learning translates neural data into commands to control external software or hardwire, like controlling a moving ball on a computer screen with your thoughts. Participants that are assigned to the experimental group must sleep in the lab, either by taking a nap or by sleeping overnight. If you are assigned to the control group, you will watch a documentary during nap. Total study time is approximately 11 hours for overnights or 5 hours for naps.  Participant qualifications: People between 18 and 26 years with no history of significant chronic neurological disease, severe mental illness, or any DSM-IV axis I disorders, and no hearing or sleep disorders. 36. DETECTIVE FOR AN HOUR! PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR MIXED REALITY USER STUDY – 2nd posting
3DI Group at Virginia Tech is investigating ways to enhance sensemaking activities such as intelligence analysis with immersive technologies. Participants will be given a case file involving a hypothetical nationwide terrorist attack. The participants will try to solve the case with 3D interaction techniques while seated, standing, or moving around in an indoor area. The entire experimental session will take about 75-90 minutes. Participant qualifications: Participants need to be proficient in English, at least 18 years old, and have normal vision with contact lenses (glasses not supported).Participation is entirely voluntary. 37. USER CENTERED EVALUATION OF SMART THERMOSTATS – 2nd  posting
We are comparing the usability of different smart residential thermostat modalities using eye-tracking and Think aloud methods. During the study, participants will be asked to use the thermostat to do some tasks such as changing the thermostat temperature and modes while they wear eye tracker glasses. The study takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Participant qualifications: Over 18 years old, proficient in English, and can work with digital devices such as laptops and tablets from a regular distance without needing corrective eyeglasses. 38. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR THE MEASURE STUDY: MEASURING ENERGY ACROSS SIZES USING RECALLS – 2nd posting
Are you interested in learning more about your energy needs and helping researchers better measure food intake in participants of varying body sizes? Participants are needed for the MEASURE study (IRB #22-654) seeking to understand how a participant’s weight class can affect measurements of dietary intake. Participants will complete measurements of height, weight, body composition, energy expenditure, and food intake over a period of 5-7 weeks with a total of 5 visits to campus. To be eligible, you must be over 18, have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2, weigh under 600 lbs., and not be following a weight control diet. Compensation of up to $150 is available for this study. We are examining the relationship between physical activity and the total number of calories expended each day (IRB #21-567). This study will require 1 virtual meeting and 2 visits to the Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory at Virginia Tech, which will take approximately 6 hours. Participant qualifications: Highly Active Masters’ Athletes (60 years of age or older), Has an average weekly mileage of 35 miles or more, Stable body weight over the past year (±5 lb.), Free of cardiovascular, lung, metabolic, kidney disease or cancer, Has competed in a marathon or ultramarathon with the past year, Has not had any recent injuries that have affected training volume.
