Dr. Kee Jeong Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at Virginia Tech. Her primary research focus is on risk and resilience in child and adolescent development, which merges traditional frameworks of developmental psychology into an applied science aimed at making a difference in the lives and welfare of people, organizations, and communities. She is passionate about combining social sciences with information technology to provide innovative learning opportunities for students while deepening their understanding of global interconnectedness. 9. WOMEN AND GENDER IN DEVELOPMENT ZOOM DISCUSSION SERIES “THE LOCAL MEANINGS OF EMPOWERMENT AND LESSONS FOR GENDER-INCLUSIVE AGRI-FOOD SYSTEMS’ PROGRAMMING IN UGANDA”
Thursday, October 17, 12:30-1:20pm, ZoomSeveral agricultural interventions that aim to empower women smallholder farmers in Africa are often top-down and disconnected from the local experiences and expectations of empowerment. This makes it difficult for well-intentioned programs to achieve the desired empowerment outcomes for women. This presentation focuses on the meanings of empowerment for rural women and men farmers in Uganda, key areas of rural women’s disempowerment, and implications for their meaningful participation in, and benefits from, agricultural opportunities. 15. VT/VCCS TEACHING FELLOWS PILOT PROGRAM INFO SESSION
Friday, October 18, 4-5pm, Zoom
The Virginia Tech/Virginia Community College System Teaching Fellows Pilot Program will offer VT graduate students in selected disciplines (TBD) an opportunity to teach as adjuncts in the Spring 2025 semester. These paid internships are available to any domestic or international student with at least 18 graduate credit hours in their discipline. Each selected student will be paired with an experienced mentor for the duration of the semester. Teaching modalities will be in-person or synchronous online, depending on location. Students will gain hands-on teaching experience, which will enhance a CV/Resume for anyone wishing to pursue an academic career. However, academic career aspirations are not mandatory and any Master’s or Doctoral student is welcome to apply! (Note: the internship does not cover tuition, and work hour restrictions may prevent a student from also having an assistantship.) The Graduate Honor System relies on trained graduate students and faculty to hear academic integrity violation cases. It takes a one-hour training to become a panelist, and after that faculty and graduate students can serve on preliminary review and review panels. The VP for Finance Senior Management Area seeks a full-time (20 hr./week) Graduate Assistant to support information technology initiatives. This professional IT role will work closely with the finance solutions team to compile business requirements, coordinate with business process owners to document changes to current business practices, assist in process re-engineering and change management planning efforts, and independently analyze business case scenarios. The successful candidate should demonstrate familiarity with basic programming constructs, knowledge of process mapping and design, experience with relational databases and query tools, and an ability to manipulate large sets of data. 29. 2025 MARSHALL SHERFIELD FELLOWSHIP – DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 1, 2024
The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission will offer one Marshall Sherfield Fellowship for post-doctoral research in any area of science and engineering. First awarded in 1998 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan and funded by the Marshall Sherfield Fellowship Foundation, the aim of the Marshall Sherfield Fellowships is to introduce American scientists and engineers to the cutting edge of UK science and engineering. It is intended to build long-term contacts and international links between the United Kingdom and the United States in key scientific areas. The wider objectives are similar to those of the Marshall Scholarships programme: To enable intellectually distinguished young Americans, their country’s future leaders, to study in the UK; To help fellows gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain; To contribute to the advancement of knowledge in science and technology at Britain’s centres of academic excellence; To motivate fellows to act as ambassadors from the USA to the UK and vice versa throughout their lives thus strengthening British American understanding; To promote the personal and academic fulfilment of each fellow. 30. COVES FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM – DEADLINE DECEMBER 12, 2024
Interested graduate students may apply for the Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) summer fellowship until December 12, 2024. The COVES Fellowship is a 12-week full-time summer fellowship program (May 17-August 6) operated by the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (the Academy) and open to STEM graduate students. According to the Academy, the aim of the program is to strengthen ties between the scientific community and Virginia’s state government, and to encourage and train more scientists and engineers to be effective advisors for public policy and programs in the Commonwealth. During the program, fellows will receive training in science policy and science communication, spend time in legislative offices, executive agencies, companies or nonprofits in the state, and will be paired with an Academy mentor and involved in briefings, meetings and the Academy’s annual summit in August. The program begins with a week-long boot camp on science policy, governance and policy making in Virginia. Thereafter, fellows spend their time with the entity with which they are matched, and also are paired with a mentor. The program includes a stipend. The Graduate School will submit five finalists for the fellowship program to the Academy, which will then choose one to represent the university in the program. Call for applications for the Châteaubriand Fellowship program, open since October 7, 2024, will close on January 10, 2025. The Chateaubriand Fellowship is offered by the French Embassy in the United States. It supports doctoral students from American institutions who wish to carry out part of their doctoral research in France for a period ranging from 4 to 9 months. It helps initiate or strengthen collaborations, partnerships and joint projects between French and American research teams. The fellowship is divided into two sub-programs:

Positive Social Development Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting parents/guardians with 6th grade children for the Cultivating Kindness Project. This study focuses understanding early adolescents’ prosocial behaviors and moral development. 33. MASTERS ENDURANCE AND ULTRA-ENDURANCE ATHLETES NEEDED FOR A RESEARCH STUDY – 1ST posting
We need highly active athletes (older than 60 years of age) for a study examining the relationship between physical activity and total number of calories expended each day (IRB #21-567). This study will require 1 virtual meeting and 2 visits to the Human Integrative Physiology Laboratory at Virginia Tech, which will take approximately 6 hours. Participants must be free of cardiovascular, lung, metabolic, kidney disease or cancer with a stable body weight over the past year (±5 lb.) We are looking for endurance athletes who have completed in marathons, ultra-marathons or Ironman triathlons in the past year, with sustained high levels of training for the past 6 months and with no recent injuries or other reasons that have changed the training volume. Join us for the third-annual Day for Data, a conference designed to bring faculty, students, and industry together for a practical exploration of business analytics, artificial intelligence, and other transformative technologies shaping our world. Day for Data is designed to give students real-world insights into the applications of data analytics, provide companies with a unique and excellent opportunity for recruitment, connect faculty to industry to foster research partnerships, and highlight the latest advancements in the field.
