Join us for the third-annual Day for Data, a conference designed to bring faculty, students, and industry together for a practical exploration of business analytics, artificial intelligence, and other transformative technologies shaping our world. Day for Data is designed to give students real-world insights into the applications of data analytics, provide companies with a unique and excellent opportunity for recruitment, connect faculty to industry to foster research partnerships, and highlight the latest advancements in the field. 20. SEEKING STUDENT SPEAKERS FOR FALL 2024 COMMENCEMENT – 3rd posting
The Graduate School is seeking 1-2 graduate student speakers for the Fall 2024 Graduate Commencement Ceremony on Friday, December 20, 2:30pm, at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia. The speeches are modeled after the talks at the Center for Communicating Science’s Nutshell Games, with individual speeches lasting about 90 seconds. Student speakers share a brief experience of their own that depicts graduate student life as they experience(d) it. Student speakers must be a master’s or Ph.D. student whom is planning on participating in graduation this semester, fall 2024. 23. POSITION FOR SPRING AND SUMMER IN COLLEGE OF SCIENCE FOR SUMMER CAMPS – 3rd posting
The GA will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Outreach during the spring and summer of 2025 to help administer the College of Science summer outreach programs, which include five residential, science-based camps and a workshop for high school science teachers. This position an administrative one and does not entail much contact with the campers. Duties include helping to:
• review and process applications for all summer programs
• review and process scholarship applications for summer camps
• recruit and select camp counselors
• respond to emails from teachers, parents, and campers
• collect and manage forms for camp and workshop personnel
• design and administer surveys to campers and camp/workshop personnel.
• Help with campers and parents sign in/sign out at the camps.
The GA may work remotely but must be available for weekly in-person meetings with the Assistant Dean and to help campers and parents sign in and out of camps. Position runs Spring and both Summer terms 2025. Desired qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree; Strong organizational and administrative skills; competency with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Forms and OneDrive; strong communication skills by phone and email; professionalism; good problem-solving skills. 26. COVES FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM – DEADLINE DECEMBER 12, 2024
Interested graduate students may apply for the Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) summer fellowship until December 12, 2024. The COVES Fellowship is a 12-week full-time summer fellowship program (May 17-August 6) operated by the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (the Academy) and open to STEM graduate students. According to the Academy, the aim of the program is to strengthen ties between the scientific community and Virginia’s state government, and to encourage and train more scientists and engineers to be effective advisors for public policy and programs in the Commonwealth. During the program, fellows will receive training in science policy and science communication, spend time in legislative offices, executive agencies, companies or nonprofits in the state, and will be paired with an Academy mentor and involved in briefings, meetings and the Academy’s annual summit in August. The program begins with a week-long boot camp on science policy, governance and policy making in Virginia. Thereafter, fellows spend their time with the entity with which they are matched, and also are paired with a mentor. The program includes a stipend. The Graduate School will submit five finalists for the fellowship program to the Academy, which will then choose one to represent the university in the program. The Chateaubriand Fellowship is offered by the French Embassy in the United States. The Distributed Virtual Environments Lab at Virginia Tech is recruiting participants for a research study focused on interactive experiential learning using the Digital Twin concept. The study explores cybersecurity scenarios, particularly cyberattacks targeting water treatment facilities, and will be conducted using the Meta Quest 2 VR platform. Our research team is recruiting participants with and without low back pain for a study involving ultrasound imaging of the thoracolumbar fascia (a soft-tissue covering over the top of your muscles) and treatment of low back pain. The Mind Music Machine Lab at Virginia Tech is seeking individuals to participate in a study to determine how gestures can improve the acquisition of algorithmic interpretation skills. Participants will learn how to crochet during the study. The Mask On/Mask Off series promotes self-care within the APIDA community and develops connection and encourages engagement. The APIDA + Center will offer Korean spa masks and provide tips to promote self-care. To develop connections and educate students about the APIDA experience, we will be hosting APIDA trivia as well as bonding through performing karaoke songs from APIDA artists and songwriters.
