2. SHORT STAT COURSE FOR GRADS: PARAMENTRIC VS SEMI/NONPARAMETRIC REGRESSION MODELS
Wednesday, Jul 23, 4:30-6:30pm, 1080 Torgersen Hall;
The primary goal of this short course is to guide researchers who need to incorporate unknown, flexible, and nonlinear relationships between variables into their regression analyses. Any application area that uses regression analysis can potentially benefit from semi/nonparametric regression. R software will be used in this course, which will cover: (1) Differences between parametric and semi/nonparametric regression models; (2) How do I know if I should use nonparametric regression model for my data? (3) A comparison between parametric and nonparametric regression in terms of fitting and prediction criteria; (4) Methods of fitting semi/nonparametric regression models. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data. 4. GA OPENING IN GLOBAL EDUCATION – 1st posting

5. COACHES SOUGHT FOR 2014-15 VT CLUB SPORTS – 1st posting

VT Engage is hiring 21 part- and full-time members to serve in their new AmeriCorps program with the American Red Cross in Roanoke and Smart Beginnings NRV in the areas of disaster preparedness/response and early childhood literacy. This is a great opportunity for students, alumni, and community members to gain invaluable experience, learn more about their community, and fulfill Virginia Tech’s motto of Ut Prosim. New members will be selected by August 4. Starting this September, each member will serve for approximately one year to build awareness and capacity in our communities. All of these positions come with a stipend and educational award. There are several 300 and 675 hour positions available that would fit well with a current student’s schedule. 2. SHORT STAT COURSE FOR GRADS: SQL IN R
Wednesday, Jul 16, 4:30-6:30pm, 1080 Torgersen Hall;
Structured Query Language (SQL) is the prevailing language to communicate with datasets today. Many popular statistical packages have integrated SQL as a built-in part or add-on package. Taught by Xinran Hu, this short course will cover basic SQL concepts, querying commands from a single dataset (select, where), aggregate function (group by, having, sum, avg, max, min), and querying commands from multiple dataset (join). Attendees can practice these commands with an online SQL learning source, sqlzoo.net. This short course is an introduction for researchers who want to learn the basic SQL commands. Prior experience with SQL or programming is NOT required. Experience with R is preferred but NOT required. 10. PARENTS AND ADOLESCENTS WANTED FOR NUTRITION RESEARCH – 3rd posting
Children 12-18 and parents are needed for a study to determine the reliability and validity of a biomarker for beverage consumption and added sugar intake in adolescents. The study involves children completing beverage and theory-based questionnaires, food recalls, and two non-invasive fingerstick blood samples across 5 sessions; parents will complete three questionnaires on first visit.  2. SHORT STAT COURSES SCHEDULE FOR SUMMER 2014: GRAPHICS IN R
Wednesday, Jul 2, 4:30-6:30pm. 1080 Torgersen Hall
Taught by Chris Franck, this session will introduce R techniques to produce several statistical graphs including histograms, bar plots, box plots, and scatter plots among others. Syntax to control colors, plotting characters, axes, legends, and labels will be covered, and users will learn to write high resolution graphics to the file type of their choice. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components. The lecture component will cover pros and cons of various graphics and approaches, and the computer portion will allow attendees to write, modify, and execute R codes to produce graphics based on these data. 3. SHORT STAT COURSES SCHEDULE FOR SUMMER 2014: STATISTICAL ANALYSIS IN R

Taught by Ian Crandell, this class is the second in a three-course series that assumes no previous coding experience in R or any other language. Experience using R or attending Part I of this series is suggested but not required. The intended audience includes researchers who want to gain basic exposure to statistical analysis in R with the ultimate goal of incorporating R into their research programs. R is a free computing and graphical software/environment for statistical analysis. This course is designed to provide a basic statistical analysis in R using two data sets. The first data set comes from a study of low birth weights and includes 189 observations and various prediction variables. Analyses described include t-tests (one-sample, two sample, paired tests), ANOVA, generalized linear regression (logistic regression), and nonparametric tests. The second data set summarizes binary responses and six continuous predictors. The course includes a lecture portion covering statistical concepts and a computer lab component that covers usage of R to perform the analyses described above. 18-64 year-old participants in good health and with at least a month’s experience in 3D modeling or art like clay, sculpture, fabric or other tangible mediums are sought to participate in a study on how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system. For one max. 2-hour session, researchers will study how you use their system, what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and the times are very flexible to meet your schedule. If selected to participate, you will be asked to read a written consent form, and will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art. The moderator will train you on how to use the system, and then you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do. You will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Audio will be recorded during the interview. 6. CERTIFICATE PROGRAM ‘STRATEGY & MARKETING FOR EMERGING COUNTRIES’ IN U OF SAO PAULO – 1st posting
The courses take place in São Paulo, Brazil and offer an opportunity for students from all over the world to attend a 3-week certificate program and immersion experience. Students are supported by an extensive scholarship program, covering 70% of the expenses of the chosen course. The Graduate Honor System is searching for a new chief justice due to the impending graduation of the current chief justice, Jordan Booker. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
