5. GRADS SOUGHT FOR FOCUS GROUP FOR “FOOD SECURITY” COURSE DEVELOPMENT – sign up now

The Appalachian Foodshed Project (AFP) is working with communities, farmers, policymakers, non-profits, and institutions to better understand community food security in Appalachia. Faculty involved with the AFP are planning a graduate-level Community Food Security Course to be offered to any graduate student interested in this topic from both a practitioner and scholarly perspectives. To ensure this course meets student needs, your input is needed! For example: What do you know about food security? What do you want to know? What information do you need for a future career? There will be two focus groups for graduate students to discuss how the upcoming course should be designed. Your participation will help with the design of course content, course activities and assessment techniques. Participants in the 90-min focus group will be provided with dinner prior to the meeting. 10. HIGHLIGHTER EXTRAVAGANZA

Omega Tau Sigma will be hosting a Social event called the "Highlighter Extravaganza." With finals here soon, students will be breaking out the highlighters to study. This social event is intended to give graduate students a chance to relax before cranking into finals mode. Proceeds from the event will benefit Relay for Life as well as other charitable organizations. Ticket cost is 10 dollars in advance – this provides 3 drink tickets (alcohol) upon admission, as well as access to food and all the music you can listen too. Non-alcoholic ticket(s), cost $5. Grad student Zejing Wu invites grad students with families to this family-friendly event that challenges families to keep kids active, learning, and healthy all summer long. The annual spring membership drive for VT’s Gamma Omega chapter of Phi Beta Delta, the first honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education, is open. The Student Success Center is hiring a full-time (20 hrs/wk) Graduate Assistant for the 2014-15 academic year, reporting to the Assistant Director in The Student Success Center (SSC). The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the development, implementation and assessment of The Student Success Center Tutoring Program, provide group and individual tutoring to undergrads enrolled in math courses at VT, focusing on courses offered through the Virginia Tech Math Emporium including Math 1015, 1016, 1525, and 1526. 20. GA POSITION OPEN IN INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH & EFFECTIVENESS FOR FALL 2014 – 3rd posting
VT’s IRE office is looking for a Graduate Assistant for Fall 2014 and possibly immediately to assist with the conversion of some static web-site activity to dynamic, user-driven, SQL-Server apps. Required skills include SQL, with ideally at least an awareness of SQL Server Reporting Services. Additionally some experience with JavaScript and ASP.NET, using C# or VB.NET would be great. Preferred skills include HTML, IIS, a fun personality, dependability, and very good communication skills. 21. SURVEY PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR STUDY ON LIFE SCIENCE COMMUNITIES – 1st posting
Researchers are working to define how best to support community knowledge sharing in life science online resources; from sharing data within a small group of colleagues to sharing expertise and opinions across broader biological science communities. Preferred participants are familiar with web applications for biological scientists (e.g., NCBI, PubMed) and/or bioinformatics tools. The survey should not take more than 15 minutes and participants will be entered in a raffle for one of twelve $25 Amazon gift cards. 22. EMOTIONAL RESPONSES SURVEY – 1st posting
Researchers are recruiting adults (men and women 18 and older) for a study on emotional responses to better understand the relationship between empathy, emotion regulation, and helping behaviors. Every participant who takes the survey will be included in a raffle to win 1 of 4 $50.00 Amazon gift cards. 23. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR QUICK PILOT SURVEY ON HEALTHY LIVING ATTITUDES – 1st posting
Any and all participants are needed for a quick, 38-question, pilot survey on healthy-living attitudes. 24. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR LUMBAR SPINE STUDY – 1st posting
The VT Industrial Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory will conduct a study examining the mechanics of the lumbar spine in healthy adults. Participants will work with a research assistant to twist and bend the subject’s torso within the limits of daily living. The study requires a single experimental session that lasts for 2-3 hours. Participating subjects will be compensated $10/hr for their time. Subjects 25 years and older are preferred, but subjects over 18 will be considered. Subjects must not suffer from any systemic inflammatory condition or any other series medical condition, or have a history of a spinal disorder, spinal fracture, or spinal surgery. 25. USER-STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR FLEXIBLE INPUT STUDY – 2nd posting
Researchers will be studying how you use, create and design objects using a flexible input computer system during one max. 2-hr session, including what you create, and how your system applies to your expertise. The location is at Knowledgeworks II, and times are flexible to adhere to your busy schedule. If selected for the study, you will be given a pre-questionnaire gauging your experiences with surface design, design, and art, and you will be trained on how to use the system. For the experimental session, you will be asked to design a set of scenes, concluding with a scene of your own creation. A video camera will be recording you and what you do during the training and experimental session. Afterwards, you will be given a post-questionnaire, and interviewed on the interactions performed. Participants must be 18-64 years old, free of health detriments that could impede, delay or harm them in performing hand movements and completing questionnaires. You must also have a minimum of a month experience in 3D modeling or art in a tangible medium. Contact Anamary Leal to participate & schedule a meeting time.

26. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION FOR 10 MINUTE SURVEY ON EMAIL USE – 2nd posting Participants are sought for a research study to investigate email practices, with the goal of gaining insight into the habits and practices of daily email users. The study consists of a 10-15 minute online questionnaire that asks about the reasons that you use email. 27. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR MENTAL WORKLOAD STUDY – 2nd posting Participants are needed for a study to investigate how mental and postural demands affect our overall mental workload. Participants will be asked to do some simple mental tasks while researchers measure your postural stability and brain activity using EEG. Must be right-handed between the ages of 18-30 with no history of low back pain to participate. The study will take 3 hours and you will be compensated $10 per hour of participation. 28. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR AUTOMATIC RECOGNITION OF FACIAL EXPRESSIONS STUDY – 2nd posting
Researchers are developing a new system for automatic recognition of facial expressions using the Kinect. Participants will be asked to watch a computer monitor and make some different emotional expressions. Participation time: about 45 mins; must be 10-30 years old to participate. 29. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DOCUMENTATION STYLES STUDY – 3rd posting
VT researchers are seeking participants 18 or older for a study on how-to documentation styles. Sign-up at https://doodle.com/v8p52i8e36cchuzr for a one-hour session. Location: McBryde Hall 110. The experiment will take about one hour. Prior to testing, participants will be asked to complete a pre-questionnaire asking basic demographic and background information, then will be presented with three short how-to documents for questions and document evaluation. Afterwards, they will complete a post-questionnaire on their experience. The survey is online, thus participants will be asked to bring their laptops. If a participant does not have access to a laptop, he or she is asked to please contact Rebecca Zeitz at razeitz@vt.edu. Data collected during this study will contribute knowledge in terms of technical documentation discourse and format type, relating to both authorship and readership. The findings will be analyzed for contributions towards a foundation for technical communications.

Participants are needed for a VT study investigating the biomechanics of human gait including low-back fatigue. The study (IRB # 10-117) consists of one session for about 3-4 hours. VT researchers are recruiting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer youth and young adults age 13-21 to participate in a project exploring the decision to come out to family as gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer. 3. INTERDISCIPLINARY SPEAKER SERIES PRESENTS: DAMN, YELLED THE SALMON WHEN IT HIT A CONCRETE WALL

Ig Noble Prize winner Richard Stephens will share the details of his research on swearing as a response to pain. Participants will be inflicted with some pain to test the validity of the research findings, and the range of responses in various languages will be recorded.  The speaker series allows graduate students and faculty from across the university to share their teaching and research passions in a casual atmosphere. Light refreshments will be served. Some may be excruciatingly hot.

4. APPLICATION FEE REFUNDS
Due to an unforeseen surplus in its operational budget, the Graduate School will be offering a one-time application fee refund for all currently enrolled graduate students. To be issued a cash refund of your application fee, you must present yourself in person to Ms. Sandy Hall in 100 Graduate Life Center between 8:00pm and 8:01pm on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. To be eligible for the refund, you will need to supply a notarized copy of your Virginia Tech admission letter and  your HokiePassport with a short-hair photo of you.

5. NEW GRAD COURSE STARTING SUMMER 2014: GRAD 8004 PRODUCTIVE PROCRASTINATION
Associate Deans Hajj and Blieszner will team-teach a new special study course beginning Summer I, 2014 and continuing every term including Maymester and Wintersession. GRAD 8004, Very Special Study: Productive Procrastination, will cover basic and advanced techniques for extending opportunities to remain in a comfortable graduate student status for as long as possible. Extensive practice in applying procrastination techniques in multiple disciplines, with assignments tailored to students’ major and level of procrastination experience. Upon successful completion of this course, students shall be able to: (1)  complete enrollment,  drop, and withdraw forms with mistakes and significant delays; (2) manage emotions and guilt associated with watching TV instead of completing school work; (3) deliver convincingly the known/most common excuses to request multi-purpose extensions; (4) lead a team of procrastinators for the purposes of collecting, counting, and adding to uncompleted tasks; (5) take more and more days to write extensive letters several pages in length to request deadline extensions. 6. STEGER TRAVEL INITIATIVE

7. NEW CHILD-CARE ALTERNATIVE IN THE GLC
The Graduate School offers a new, low-cost child-care opportunity for female graduate students. After some renovations, Room C will be turned into a giant ball pit, where children can be dropped off daily (aged new born to 3, must be potty trained) from 7:00-7:05am. Students must pay $125 per child/month. Each additional child gets a 10% discount. Children can be retrieved from the ball pit between 8:00-8:05pm daily. This program supports graduate student parents who need some time away from their children to conduct their research.

The John E. Dooley Student Engagement Grant (JEDSEG) application deadline has been extended until Mar 31 at midnight. 17. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DOCUMENTATION STYLES STUDY – 1st posting
VT researchers are seeking participants 18 or older for a study on how-to documentation styles. Sign-up at https://doodle.com/v8p52i8e36cchuzr for a one-hour session. Location: McBryde Hall 110. The experiment will take about one hour. Prior to testing, participants will be asked to complete a pre-questionnaire asking basic demographic and background information, then will be presented with three short how-to documents for questions and document evaluation. Afterwards, they will complete a post-questionnaire on their experience. The survey is online, thus participants will be asked to bring their laptops. If a participant does not have access to a laptop, he or she is asked to please contact Rebecca Zeitz at razeitz@vt.edu. Data collected during this study will contribute knowledge in terms of technical documentation discourse and format type, relating to both authorship and readership.  The findings will be analyzed for contributions towards a foundation for technical communications.

Participants are needed for a VT study investigating the biomechanics of human gait, including low-back fatigue. The study (IRB # 10-117) consists of one session for about 3-4 hours. 22. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY – 2nd posting
VT-SCORES (VT Signal Control & Operation Research and Education Systems lab) is conducting a driving simulator study to investigate driver behavior, performance, and attention when encountering car-following situations.  The study looks at the effects of emotions on driver behavior through the use of psychological (emotion) and physiological (heart rate, skin conductance) data. The study will take no more than two hours, and participants will deal with driving simulation equipment to help contribute to the understanding of dangerous driving behaviors that could reduce frequency of these behaviors and ultimately save lives. You can opt out of the experiment at any time if you experience dizziness or any similar minimal risks associated with driving simulation studies, or for any other reason. Must be licensed drivers at least 18 or older. Data obtained from the simulator will be confidential. 32. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR DRIVING SIMULATOR STUDY – 1st posting
VT-SCORES (VT Signal Control & Operation Research and Education Systems lab) is conducting a driving simulator study to investigate driver behavior, performance, and attention when encountering car-following situations.  The study looks at the effects of emotions on driver behavior through the use of psychological (emotion) and physiological (heart rate, skin conductance) data. The study will take no more than two hours, and participants will deal with driving simulation equipment to help contribute to the understanding of dangerous driving behaviors that could reduce frequency of these behaviors and ultimately save lives. You can opt out of the experiment at any time if you experience dizziness or any similar minimal risks associated with driving simulation studies, or for any other reason. Must be licensed drivers at least 18 or older. Data obtained from the simulator will be confidential. R is a powerful open-source programming environment primarily known for its statistical capabilities. This workshop will cover some advanced applications of R: distributed computing using the snowfall package, applications of the bootstrap, and structural equation modeling (SEM), as well as the basic theory and application of the bootstrap, show how it can be parallelized across a single multicore machine, and conclude with an application of the bootstrap to SEM. R is a powerful open-source programming environment primarily known for its statistical capabilities. This workshop will cover some advanced applications of R: distributed computing using the snowfall package, applications of the bootstrap, and structural equation modeling (SEM), as well as the basic theory and application of the bootstrap, show how it can be parallelized across a single multicore machine, and conclude with an application of the bootstrap to SEM. Participate in a study to investigate the underlying processes of bioinformatics experiments.  2. LISA SHORT COURSE: GRAPHICS IN R
Tuesday & Thursday, Feb 25 & 27, 4:00-6:00 pm;  3060 Torgersen Hall
The ability to create professional-grade graphics is of key importance for scientific communication. The R programming package offers a powerful, flexible, and free platform which can be used to produce publication-quality graphics. Taught by Xinran Hu, this short course will introduce R techniques to produce several statistical graphs including histograms, bar plots, box plots, scatter plots and 3D contour plots among others. Syntax to control colors, plotting characters, axes, legends, and labels will be covered, and users will learn to write high resolution graphics to the file type of their choice. The course format includes lecture and computer laboratory components. This session is the third in a 3-course series which assumes no previous coding experience in R or any other language. For the remainder of the SPRING 2014 semester, the GLC’s lockers will be available to rent on a short-term, weekly basis. To rent a locker, see a building manager at the GLC Welcome Center to receive a key. Keys will no longer be left on lockers; instead they are secured by the GLC staff and issued to a student once requested. One locker per person. The maximum time period of reservation is from Monday 7:30am to Saturday 9:00pm, at which time the key must be returned to the Welcome Center. Participants needed for a study that assesses muscular imbalances in the neck and shoulder area in patients with postural deficiencies.  Participants must be 18 or older and show postural changes such as: forward head posture, elevated and protracted shoulders, and winging of the scapulae. Common symptoms include:  neck pain, shoulder pain, and cervical headaches. Participants must be free of diseases that prevent physical loading, and should not have had prior surgery involving the cervical or thoracic spine and shoulders. 10. NEW GLC LOCKER RENTAL POLICY -2nd posting
For the remainder of the SPRING 2014 semester, the GLC’s lockers will be available to rent on a short-term, weekly basis. To rent a locker, see a building manager at the GLC Welcome Center to receive a key. Keys will no longer be left on lockers; instead they are secured by the GLC staff and issued to a student once requested. One locker per person. The maximum time period of reservation is from Monday 7:30am to Saturday 9:00pm, at which time the key must be returned to the Welcome Center. Volunteers are needed for a study examining how cocoa influences metabolism in individuals with pre-diabetes (high glucose levels). Participants must be: adults between the ages of 40-75; overweight or obese (body mass index 25-40); not currently taking any blood pressure or diabetes medications; non-smokers; without any major medical problems; willing to eat a controlled study diet for 4 weeks; Pregnant women or those who plan to become pregnant or have taken antibiotics in the past 3 months are not eligible for this study. 18. NEW GLC LOCKER RENTAL POLICY -1st posting
For the remainder of the SPRING 2014 semester, the GLC’s lockers will be available to rent on a short-term, weekly basis. To rent a locker, see a building manager at the GLC Welcome Center to receive a key. Keys will no longer be left on lockers; instead they are secured by the GLC staff and issued to a student once requested. One locker per person. The maximum time period of reservation is from Monday 7:30am to Saturday 9:00pm, at which time the key must be returned to the Welcome Center. Those who still have keys from the previous semester are asked to turn in the key immediately and empty the locker. Experienced teachers are offering Turkish language classes through the Intercultural Understanding Club (ICUC). 23. STUDENT BUILDING MANAGER WAGE POSITION OPEN IN GLC – 1st posting
The GLC Student Building Manager works closely with the operations manager for Student Centers and Activities as well as the Graduate School to provide services to GLC patrons, including excellent customer service, overall building management, reserving rooms, oversight of the information desk, basic cleaning (wiping tables, vacuuming, etc.) and administrative support. 25. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR MENTAL WORKLOAD STUDY – 1st posting
Participants are needed for a study to investigate how mental and postural demands affect our overall mental workload.  You’ll be asked to do some simple mental tasks while researchers measure your postural stability, heart rate, and brain activity using EEG. Study participants must be right-handed,  between the ages of 18-30 with no history of low back pain. 26. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR MUSCULAR IMBALANCE STUDY – 1st posting
Participants needed for a study that assesses muscular imbalances in the neck and shoulder area in patients with postural deficiencies.  Participants must be 18 or older and show postural changes such as: forward head posture, elevated and protracted shoulders, and winging of the scapulae. Common symptoms include:  neck pain, shoulder pain, and cervical headaches. Participants must be free of diseases that prevent physical loading, and should not have had prior surgery involving the cervical or thoracic spine and shoulders. Participants are required to perform muscle strength, muscle endurance, and range of motion exercises. There will be one experimental session which lasts approximately 2 – 3 hours. At the last GSA delegate meeting there was a great discussion regarding bike transportation as it pertains to graduate students. 29. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR SELF-DRIVING VEHICLE STUDY – 1st posting
VT-SCORES is conducting a study to investigate user behavior during simulated experience of riding inside of self-driving vehicle. The study will take around 30 min, and your participation can contribute to the development of novel self-driving vehicle control technology. Participation is completely voluntary and confidential. Participants will get a first-hand experience dealing with self-driving vehicle technology. You can opt out of the experiment at any time if you experience any minimal risks, or for any other reason. 30. SURVEY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED REGARDING FUTURE BT BUS ROUTES – 1st posting
As part of the planning for future routes, Blacksburg Transit recently developed a short survey to help identify the transportation needs of Town of Blacksburg residents and students.  The purpose of the route analysis is to improve bus service in the Town of Blacksburg and on the VT campus.  Responses to this survey will help highlight existing deficiencies, identify future opportunities, and ultimately help decision-makers develop an improved transit system. 31. RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR USER STUDY OF BIOINFORMATICS RESOURCE – 1st posting
Participate in a study to investigate the underlying processes of bioinformatics experiments. The study will take approximately 2 hours and will involve eye-tracking with think-aloud while you perform tasks using a computer. Preferred participants are proficient in the use of bioinformatics resources, are familiar with the process of functionally analyzing a gene sequence.We will compensate participants at a rate of $10 per hour for a maximum of 2 hours, or a maximum of $20 total. 33. PARTICIPANTS SOUGHT FOR METABOLISM STUDY – 2nd posting
Volunteers are needed for a study examining how cocoa influences metabolism in individuals with pre-diabetes (high glucose levels). Participants must be: adults between the ages of 40-75; overweight or obese (body mass index 25-40); not currently taking any blood pressure or diabetes medications; non-smokers; without any major medical problems; willing to eat a controlled study diet for 4 weeks; Pregnant women or those who plan to become pregnant or have taken antibiotics in the past 3 months are not eligible for this study. Participants will receive information about glucose and cholesterol levels, body composition, and blood pressure, and may receive up to $300 compensation for their time.
